What's the recommended solvent for cleaing CV Joints?

I have a full dozen to clean and inspect (and select the best 4 to put back on.)

This has got to be the messiest job I've seen on a car....

Thanks,
Gary.

PS: Anyone need/want a CV Joint or 2? I will have some left over.

The Purple Castrol stuff works good too. Just don't leave it on your hands or aluminum too long!

The ONLY reason I dont use the Castrol... brake cleaner is pressurized. It blows the crap away which means less manuel labor for me.

Brad,
Do you use brake cleaner for tranny's as well? I used
5 cans on my tranny over the weekend, and it does'nt look anything like that WEVO!!! LOL

Ha ha.. Thom.. clap56.gif good one. WEVO has the cases bead blasted prior to assembly. Makes all the difference in the world.

I bet your tranny is clean however...

It must have been grimy and greasy.

We will start cleaning my wifes car this weekend for the MUSR. She drives it EVERY day to and from work (about 60 miles a day).. I know it will be a mess. I try and clean the underside during every oil change and valve adjust.

Heh. After going through 1 can, I realized that "mechanical removal" was the way to go, at least for the first six pounds worth of crud on the transmission case... Scrape, scrape, scrape, scrape.... Then I started in on the brake cleaner again.

Brake cleaner didn't really make much of a dent in my tranny. Scrape scrape scrape! smash.gif smash.gif smash.gif

I power washer my tranny first, then that Super Purple cleaner 3 times. Then the Brake Cleaner to finish it with some final scraping to get the really stuck crap off. Must be 10 lbs lighter!

Ok Brad, I tried the Berryman's Brake cleaner vs CRC Brake cleaner (with 20% More) and can't tell the difference other than the CRC lasted alittle longer. I am cleaning the engine as I reassemble it after curing the oil leak. Jeez, a little oil leak can sure make a mess in a hurry!!
