914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Fiberglass bumper tops Pics on post 60

I've been pushing james to make these for some time, as you all know. He's finally hirred some help to get these done.
If I can get 25 sets we can drop that down to $290.
So for less than you can buy one bumper top for, you can get a set. They will come in a black gel coat, but can be sanded and painted to the color of your car.
So who's interested?

I might be interested. Now that you have the molds for the bumper top, can you do a whole bumper with the top already molded in?
How much lighter are the FG tops than the rubber?
I have some nice rubber tops. Selling those would probably pay for the FG.

Yes I agree, I will get you some pictures as soon as I have the product. james is supposed to be working throught the weekend on these to get them out faster. He's making improvements to the design as the early ones that another vendor had made didn't have enough support and they had more flex than they should have. These will be a significant leap above what was on the market. I can't wait to post, but now that these have been fast tracked, I thought I should get the GB up to hit the level we need to get the cost down.

They will come textured like the OEM and are a black Gel coat, so they will look like OEM. They can be sanded and painted to match the car as a few have done.

We will be selling a version of the front molded to the bumper, as well as both pieces as individuals. The rear is the early style bumper as it is right for the 6, we had not planned to mold them together.
We are also working on a "chroming" process for the bumpers, but the bumpers will be available in a black gel coat 1st.
More good stuff to come too.

Pre 75, it's the part on top of the steel, I made these in rubber, but fiberglass will make good looking bumpers afordable to all.
It's these -

Hi Mark,
Pardon my ignorance. I am not familiar with fiberglass and the molding process. How will these bumper tops be made? Will they have a solid core? Or will they be something like motorcycle side cover? I'm worried if I get a set and someone accidentally steps on my bumper and cracks it.
Thanks, Dave

I think the real answer here is dont let anyone stand on your bumpers! 8 year old kid fuch'ing around in my garage jumped off one of mine and destroyed a stock bumper top. He was not even 50 lbs. If anything I would think you might be safer with fiberglass as its easier to repair and cheaper to replace.
Posted by: Mikey914 Sep 12 2012, 11:10 PM
You hit the nail on the head. It is fiberglass. Don't expect that it will support any real weight. It is cosmetic, but with that being said, we are reinforcing the part so it will not have the sag that the other previously available ones had.
These are made in 3 part molds and blended. To look like and OEM.
The difference is the black gel coat will make them look like the have just been hit with armor all.
If you want durable. The solid rubber bumper tops are the best. But at 2x + the cost.
Fiberglass is repairable.
These are not solid but will apear to be once installed.
5 more to go

My response was to a question about making them look as authentic as possible
Original tops were not slick as the gel coat will be. They had a light texture and were more of a semi black then the glossier black that the gel coat will be
I would guess that if your not interested in going through painting them, then you probably aren't too concerned about perfecting the original look, so you could bolt them right on as is.
Posted by: Mikey914 Sep 14 2012, 06:39 AM
It's not big deal to shoot them with a satin bumper paint. Just takes time and money. We can lay the gel into the mold. It's a great finish, and less work. I can shoot these at $10 a bumper if you want. Or if you wan to save some cash -
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/SEM0/39103/N1969.oap?ck=Search_N1969_-1_-1&pt=N1969&ppt=C0171
It's a satin paint that will look more like the rubber bumper.

Well they will not fit in the same box, but, they can arrive together. The production on these will begin late this next week. I'm working on the blocks that these mount with, we are trying to make the mounts a stainless stud with a rubber isolator.
We will start sending out PMs this next week notifying those that were interested they are in production.

These will mount just like the OEM tops. They will simply "bolt on". No drilling required.
And yes it's not too late to get in on these. I just need to confirm production schedule before I take money. I anticipate that these will be in full swing in about a week.

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 13 2012, 11:01 PM
The backs will have solid blocks with stainless studs, I will be putting a rubber isolator on the base to avoid damage to the bumper. I'll post pictures later in the week.
But honestly, as long as it's a solid mount and it will not damage the bumper, how the back looks is really not a issue as it's not cosmetic.

More stuff to order, but it will be a while, I'm putting the trailing arms back right now. Got the big front targa seal a while back, did a test fitting and it looked nice. I really appreciate the parts you are making, makes the rustoration a lot easier, and I doubt you are making Mitt Romney money with these projects.

I've got the 1st 4 out, I'll have 6 more monday and will have another 7 the following week. Part of the issue with getting these out faster were the substructure blocks, James ahs bene doing these by hand. I'll be setting up a program to make these on an automated mill, so I can crank these out faster. There are 10 blocks on a set, and there are 3 different variations. He underestimated the time necessary to do these, so the production will jump up to 6-7 sets per week.

Getting these slowly from James, the 1st bacth had some adheasion issues and we had to revisit the method of attachement. So yes no problem. I have about 15 sets in front of you, but if you can wait about 20 days, no problem, These will be all shipped out before the 25th.

Still working through backorders, 2-3 weeks before I'll be able to get anything out to new orders.

These are moving painfully slow. I wound up having to machine the mounts for James, I've been told I'll have another 6 sets this week (friday) I'd bet on 4 sets, so these trickle out, but we'll get them out. Just dropped one out to ZIG-ZAG Thursday, with 2 others, so yes the GB is open until these are fufilled. Hopefully we'll have these wrapped up in 3 weeks.

mikey - are these still being made i ordered and paid for a set back in October, I'm waiting to grind off the rubber bumper mounts off my 1975 model - but if they aren't gonna turn up the rubber girders will have to go back on.

Yes,
painfully slowly. James was hsvingissus making the mounts, so I machined these and I'm awaiting the delivery of the 9 that are pending. I've been told it will be this week. Which will probably be Friday. I would anticipate these will ship Monday.
I'll update the thread as soon as they hit.

Mark...have you considered a killer deal on a group buy for the regular (real) bumper tops? I would be in for a set of those!

Sweet! Are these the last 9? guessing I would be on that list then.

Its been a month with no update? I assume things are still not going well.
Not a big deal, just trying to figure out if I will need to come up with an interim solution here as I expect to have the car ready to hit the road in about 4 weeks.
Just cleaning up the engine and trans now, then i just need to slap that back in, get a few more rubber bits, and install the bumpers and ill be good to go!

Got my package yesterday! Detail and quality on these looks amazing, much better then any other fiberglass parts I have had. Never had fiberglass that didnt require some work to get to fit, but these look like they will probably just bolt right on.

I need the front only. Anybody just need a rear?

These are finally moving. All orders should be complete this week.
It was kind of a pain as James was a little slow in getting this taken care of, but it's finnally done.
