914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Broken Impeller Blade

Posted by: d7n7master Nov 30 2004, 11:51 AM

Hi All,
While installing the impeller I noticed a missing blade & found two more that are cracked. See pic.
The book says it's a "balanced" assy... more like "was"!!! sad.gif
What should I do now??? Thanks, Gary

That's common. People like to stick screwdrivers in there when changing the fan belt or getting the engine to turn for a tune up etc.

Call http://www.highperformancehouse.com and talk to the Cowboy. I'm "guessing" Rich'll have 1 or 2 laying around laugh.gif

Oh... and yes, it's best to get a new one and keep the assembly balanced.

You want the cheap way? Go to the exact opposite side of the fan and remove corresponding blades. Very carefully polish the remaining casting flash and run it as is. You should not ever have a problem with it.

Posted by: d7n7master Nov 30 2004, 12:54 PM

Remove the opposite blade, not a bad idea, except that it has two other blades that are cracked as well.
I'm gonna go ahead & replace it now while the engines still out of the car.
Thanks, Gary

Porsche says never run one with more than 3 missing blades. That is all I have to say.

Posted by: ruddyboys Nov 30 2004, 01:14 PM

I remember seeing a post awhile back about how all but a few blades were removed for better air flow or maybe I had a few too many Buds.

Posted by: Eric_Shea Nov 30 2004, 01:22 PM

Hmmmmm. Let me get this straight: idea.gif

We're looking at an engine that's currently out of the car, has a missing fan blade and has a few more cracked blades. Last I checked, I couldn't sell a spare fan for $10.00 and the consensus is "to remove more blades at this time..." smilie_pokal.gif

Sounds good to me. laugh.gif

I just checked the bird parts website. They have a "new" fan for $271. - & rebuilds are NLA.
I'll call HPH next...
Thanks, Gary

I had one FS in the classified here for quite some time. Finally sold it for around $10.00.

Huh! where does it say that?

Posted by: type47 Nov 30 2004, 02:45 PM

... the "remove the blades" thread was referring to race track only cars.....

Posted by: synthesisdv Nov 30 2004, 03:34 PM

here's mine

they snap off pretty easy with some pliers. Then grind for a while.

Crack the blades exactly opposite of the already cracked ones smile.gif

I thought they worked better if you alternate, cutting out groups of four?

This was a big discussion around here once.

Added a handful of horsepower.

Go here quick and snap this puppy up.

Ask the seller if it has all the blades BEFORE you bid.

Hi All,
You'se guys crack me up!!! boldblue.gif
So much info - thanks soooo much - now I've got "options" beerchug.gif Awesome!
I had NO idea that removing blades was even an option. But it did make me think...
Many years ago I was a tech/mech for a large aircraft engine accessory manufacturer.
One of my many tasks was to overhaul (ACM's) Air Cycle Machines. The overhaul was a piece 'o cake. The dynamic balancing was a stone BITCH!!! headbang.gif But once you learned to balance - your next raise was a sure thing.
BTW - Removing blades was NOT an option... alfred.gif cool_shades.gif
This is my daily driver (once I surgically remove her from the jack stands).
I'm in O.C. Ca. & it gets HOT here. So I'm thinkin' I need ALL of the blades for those times when I'm stuck in traffic on a 90+ day. Am I wrong??? Tell me - I can take it.
Thanks again, Gary

Can the Mazda guys answer 914 questions? laugh.gif

Posted by: d7n7master Nov 30 2004, 07:17 PM

I doubt it. They don't/can't answer mazda questions - unless it's about your stereo.
But, I'm not tryin' to flame the mazda board. I'm just trying to say what-a-difference. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 4. Peace out. biggrin.gif

If you need one, I have several here you can choose from I think. I will have to check to be sure. I may have given them away already. I am sure there are a few laying around somewhere between here and Joe's house. If I dont have one, I am sure someone else will have one for you. I would bet Slits has a few hundred.

Posted by: redshift Nov 30 2004, 07:31 PM

I think all the sub-cat 914 joints will all become this monolithic pile of dog poopy.

People here know everything, why go anywhere else?

I can probably answer questions about rotary engines... I used to build them for a friends race car. Imagine a motor that would only idle at 2K, and even there it loped. But it was god awful fast when you cracked the throttle. Bridge ported 13B with a Holly 4BBL carb on it. Header on the exhaust mounted in a fomula chassis. (We used a 914 gearbox on it.....)
