914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Window Guide End Cap

Posted by: McMark Jan 9 2005, 02:52 PM

Hey, I need the part numbers for the left and right window guide caps. Here's a picture. It's part #20.

EDIT: Read below. Can anyone make these pieces since the left side is NLA?

914 542 174 10 Right side

Thanks Demick! IPB Image

Damn, looks like the left side is unavailable. IPB Image

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 9 2005, 05:06 PM

What are they made of?

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 9 2005, 05:11 PM

Hard plastic that I bet you could duplicate, Bruce IPB Image

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2005, 01:14 AM

Yeah, they are hard plastic. Somebody's gotta make these. IPB Image

Posted by: sj914 Jan 10 2005, 02:01 AM

What is it with parts like these, L & R sides. One side doesn't continue to be produced.

Posted by: Demick Jan 10 2005, 10:01 AM

It's not that they stop producing one side only. They have likely stopped producing both sides, but there is remaining stock of one side (people bought more left sides than right sides, so the left ran out sooner). Once the right side runs out, it will be NLA as well.

figure the left side of the car normally gets more use and attention...so parts will be bought more often for the drivers side....

Posted by: skline Jan 10 2005, 10:11 AM

Someone should fab them out of aluminum and then anodize them black. either that or find something similar to replace them with that is still made.

Who made the plastic rear trunk targa holders? I forget. This part is definitely a 914 niche that needs to be filled. I'll sign up for 3 sets right now.

I'm going to change the topic title since this thread has morphed.

GWN7...AKA.......Bruce Napier made/makes the new trunk parts....

Ah! And he's already enlightened as to this thread. EXELLECT! IPB Image What, WTF did I just type?!?!? How about, EXCELLENT!

Posted by: jfort Jan 10 2005, 12:52 PM

I need those door parts, too. I think I heard that they are two types -- one for earlier doors, one for later doors.

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2005, 01:02 PM

You're right there are two styles. The early ones are NLA on both sides. IPB Image

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 10 2005, 01:07 PM

I'll have to see what shape the ones I have on the spare doors I have are first. When did they make the change? One style for 70 -72? Another for 73-76? (I'm at work and don't have access to the PET)

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2005, 01:12 PM

Your years are correct according to PelicanParts.

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2005, 01:14 PM

Here's the early one.

I'll make 'em out of carbon fiber. IPB Image

(just kidding, DON'T try to order them.)

Paul

Posted by: McMark Jan 10 2005, 01:24 PM

I'll take 20 in CF. Thanks Paul! PayPal sent!

I had this same problem last year... I found the left side one on a parts car.. so you may want to see if some shop has a parts car that will let you grab one from. I dont think that metal or CF (and I know you were mostly kidding..) would work because its a pretty tight fit to get them in place and you need a little give from the plastic to make it fit.

Posted by: scott thacher Jan 10 2005, 03:31 PM

how much do they cost, or at least the one you can still get, i could make for 20 a set including shipping

after 10 sets 15 a set

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 10 2005, 03:34 PM

Pelican shows them as $7.95 (for the available one)

at least not on the early ones, dunno about later style doors ...
on the early ones, the plastic "lip" needs to be flexible ...

Nobody's making CF ones. Except the imaginary kind. IPB Image

I was working on door seals today and took this picture. This is why we need these parts. It fills in the gap.

Im in too, I just noticed I dont have any on mine right now. Not to say that there isnt a set in the box on the shelf. I have hundreds of new parts sitting in a box waiting to be put on the car. One of these days, I will go through the box and see whats in there.

Posted by: eric914 Jan 11 2005, 07:47 AM

I'm in for a set of the later ones.

Posted by: rick 918-S Jan 11 2005, 08:12 AM

My left was missing when I got my car. Two parts cars later, still missing. I'm in.

Posted by: dralf Jan 11 2005, 09:27 AM

Let me know if someone make a set of the later style. I definatly need the left side one ( sounds like the window will break every time I close the door). I will check tonight for I might need the right one to ( never been a passenger in my toy )

I did a little research over lunch and found a place that sells a plastic mold making kit. I ordered one and will try to make a mold of the RH guide (I have a new one). If successful, I will post results. Then I will need someone to lend me a LH guide to make a mold pattern from. My understanding is that the part won’t be harmed when making the mold as the mold is made from a two part silicon rubber.

If this all works I will offer the LH and RH guides for sale. Doesn't look like the cost will be much more than what the NLA parts were selling for.

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 11 2005, 04:11 PM

Buy the mold realise agent or your new part might end up stuck.

Gee now there will be 3 of us making them....we will never run out of them now. IPB Image

Nothing works better. Great name too!

Use it on all prototypes at work. Those annoying catches, binds and squeeks just go away. IPB Image

Oh yeah, killer mold release, I 'd steal er..... borrow a can from the molding guys in the model shop. IPB Image

If Jake used it in all his engines, I bet they could turn another 1000 rpm....

No, wait! It's the secret cam/lifter anti-wear spray! IPB Image

As long a somebody makes some, I'll be happy. I'm putting my money in with Bruce because I've seen his previous plastic work and am pleased. IPB Image
