I had the pleasure of meeting Charles and seeing the nickies at the FFC. These are T.H.E. cylinders for your 914 or bus or VW. Super super product. The attention to detail is spectacular. (And I look for this in everything).

Charles is a super nice guy as well. If I ever redo one of mine it will be with his stuff!

I have used 40 sets of them and every single time I have been more than pleased.

Even the first set we ever tested impressed me.

Mueller, edit your first post- Too much info.

Posted by: Tom Perso Jan 10 2005, 03:25 PM

Guys, I helped build the first ever "Nikkies" equipped T4 motor (Shad's monster) and held Jake's first set of cylinders in my hands.

Charles (and Shad) are the nicest bunch of guys you can find, good businessmen too. Heck, I let them both crash at my place on their way to a show!

Guys, when you hold these, you'll get an erection with a giant cheeseburger on the end. They're unreal (the cylinders).

Later,
Tom

Posted by: GWN7 Jan 10 2005, 03:44 PM

I also saw them in person at the FFC....they are to pretty to put in a engine.... IPB Image

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 10 2005, 03:47 PM

I have held the smallest Nickies and the largest ever made as well....

I"m very happy to have been a part of the development of these parts and the guy that dropped the hammer on them for the first time on the dyno!

every time says "Those are so damn expensive" I just laugh, because they have no idea just how awesome they really are. An engine with these cylinders has more potential than anything else on earth!

I have seen head temps drop 100 degrees with their use!

I was going to....cylinders had already been sent out for the plating....no big deal as long as I can still do a 78 or 80mm stroke with the smaller 94's.....the smaller bore might actually help.....

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 10 2005, 04:29 PM

80x94...

Outstanding..

What else do you have planned for this engine?

Stephane

Posted by: DNHunt Jan 10 2005, 04:58 PM

Mike

Those things are so darn pretty you hate to cover them with the tin. My 2270 is getting there. I drove it across the Narrows Bridge yesterday for the first time. It's a big deal cause you don't want to breakdown on the bridge.

Wednesday I'll datalog and start fine tuning.

Putting together that engines gonna be a blast.

Jake Raby secret grind cam, ceramic lifters, 911 valve adjusters, chromoly push rods,ARP head bolts, ARP case bolts, Type I oil pump, European Racing Headers ceramic coated header, stock 2.0 heads (for now) and for induction I'll either go with individual throttle bodies controlled by the Megasquirt or a Haltech if Brad Roberts does not need it back (he's going to need some sort of EFI for an engine he is building and the Haltech belongs to him)

I also got these manifolds in the mail today, custom 45mm throttle bodies will be mounted on them...

Posted by: jr91472 Jan 10 2005, 05:57 PM

ok, I'll ask the "cheap skate question",

Jake, what is the largest "non nickie" cylinder you would put in an engine? And what pistons would you mate with them?

sorry if this has been asked before.

thx

He's answered it lots of times--

96mm maximum for the old cast-iron cylinders from Jake. KB cast pistons, or possibly JE forged if you're boosting or spinning to high RPMs and can live with piston slap when the engine is cold.

OK Jake, I'm a "typical 914 Owner", I just don't have a typical 914!! IPB Image

Jake, I'll let you use my car for a rolling test bed. It's real easy to remove/install an engine.
When I'm done I should be able to do it in about 30 minutes by myself. Tell me when you have an engine you want to drive and I'll bring my car up to you for a blast through the hills.

All that money spent and your cheapin' out on the exhaust system.
What a shame!
IPB Image
IPB Image

Posted by: Jake Raby Jan 10 2005, 10:43 PM

Exhaust is the BIGGEST single overlooked aspect...
Guys do everything to increase the engines capability to breathe, more displacement, bigger valves, ported heads, big carbs........

And guess what???
80% of all that goes in that engine has to get out the tailpipe. If not you're just backing up heat and power in the heads...

I have seen 21HP come from a simple header change! More than once too!

The bigger the engine the more the demand for good exhaust..........

The biggest LN Engineering Nickies in the world!

IPB Image

There ya go.

280 HP N/A

Wait till you see my 111.5mm animals...

But to fit them you have to whack off the oil cooler provision on the case and do a **few** Mods that aren't exactly normal.

It has a 92+mm stroke. I know I can fit a 92 I'm now trying to go larger.

Do the math.
