914World.com _ 914World Garage _ OT: MikeZ got over 2 inches of rain today

Posted by: skline Jan 11 2005, 01:21 AM

Hey Mike, you staying dry up there? The news just said you got over 2 inches of rain today. Hope everything is ok up there.

Posted by: swood Jan 11 2005, 01:24 AM

I heard it was quite a bit more than that. We're talkin' biblical proportions of rain this month! If i'm not mistaken, between Z and Ventura (not the dork ex gov of Minn, the town) they got well over 12''. That's scary wet. IPB Image

12" of rain........I'd have to do the math IPB Image , but that means like 4" in the floorboard, and 3" in the rear trunk of a 914! IPB Image

Sheesh...what's this guy talking about...

Ok, La Conchita got 23.74" since last Friday, the hardest hit on our coast. Downtown LA got 3.5" today. I was in Culver City all day and it was wette than I've ever seen.

Hey Stevo,
Where you "livin la vida Long Beach"
during the bad flooding in like 1995?
We live right by the flood control channel off of Palo Verde,
and my baby sitter's car floated down my street!
Totaled!

Other side of Signal Hill where everything is "Famous" IPB Image

It's pounding pretty good right now.

Posted by: TonyAKAVW Jan 11 2005, 02:33 AM

We've had a ton of rain here but luckily we sorta live on top of a hill so it mostly drains away from us. Even still there has been lots of flash floods in the streets in the lower spots. A nearby park was flooded under something like 6 feet of water last week or so.

I think its time to plan a post-rain drive up in the Santa Monica Mountains. I wonder how many roads up there got washed away.

I'm looking for the sun today....our rain gauge at work shows 24 inches in the last 15 days.

I've lost 30 feet of fence, couple of trees, 20 foot of retaining wall but still in one piece. Thanks for asking.....

Two of the three roads in and out of town are closed....my office is a ghost town. People are crashing on other people's couches as they can't get home....it ain't fun.

HWY 101 is completely covered by the mudslide that took out pretty much the whole bedroom community of La Conchita.....3 dead 12+ missing....

Posted by: boxstr Jan 11 2005, 09:50 AM

Really big news here in the Rain states of Oregon and Washignton. Seems like they are showing the La Conchita mudslide every 10 minutes on TV.
Tahoe is getting more snow then they know what to do with.
Forecast calls for some drying an sunshine with warming which won't be good for the Tahoe area and Sierras.
If anyone needs a dry place to crash we have room at CAMP 914. Take care.

10.5" in my back yard bucket last 24 hours. No damage, but wind is coming up so we'll probably lose a few more trees with the soaked ground. Looks like we'll have a clear week, but some pretty big rocks coming down on the canyon roads. Topanga Canyon:

Well, shoot....send some of that wetness up here as its dry as a bone. We have almost no snow in the mountains so that means no freakin water in the summer.
Now thats a rock!!! can I bring my dynamite?

That's a crazy rock pic Howard. Like Craig said, they must have shown that big mudslide video 15 times on the local news.

Seems like the warm sunny states of California and Florida haven't been the most desirable places to be in the last 6 months.

I got a couple of boats I don't use in the winter if any of you southern California folks needs one. IPB Image

Posted by: SLITS Jan 11 2005, 11:38 AM

As of last night...36" rain....4' snow in the mountains. All roads into/out of closed for the moment. Rock & Mud slides and LOTS of water running into Big Bear Lake.

Send the boats.

Send the dynamite.

Bright spot....all the rain compacted the snow to 2'. Still blowing ice & snow this am (Tuesday).

ron, since you're snowed in, sounds like a good time to write the WCC05 song IPB Image

And then there's the teeny black ants. I know they're just god's little creatures, but nests must have flooded and they all showed up here. They just laugh at malathion. Any suggestions? Please hold the dynamite/c4/nuclear waste tips.

Posted by: rhodyguy Jan 11 2005, 11:54 AM

all the rain and snow should make for lots of lush green growth in the hills, mountains, and canyons. should be another nightmare come july when it all starts burning. IPB Image

Tell Suzi to sweet talk them.....I sure they would follow her anywhere...I would IPB Image

As far as a solution for you:

!. Pile an enormous amount of dry dirt in your living room so they can create a new home. Since you have everything else, you can have a living ant farm without glass.

2. Dig out your oversize clown shoes and start stompin IPB Image

I am sorry to hear about the people caught in the mudslide.

But it just reinforces why I like living in Texas. The California seasons are Fire, Mud, Flood and Smog. IPB Image

In all honesty.. I am glad that Mikey and his family are OK.

Go to Target and get the Combat Ant Bait in a tube. It's a gel and you put some down preferably outside and they go to town on it. Werks real good. The only thing I've found. The key is bait, not spraying to kill.

We've got em real bad too. IPB Image

Clay, living by the coast in CA is like restoring 914's. Those who do it understand, but hard to explain to anyone else IPB Image

Thanks all for the ant tips, and Bruce, do you have that cubit to metric conversion chart? Can't find mine IPB Image

I think it may have something to do with being a "red" state. IPB Image

For the ants, sprinkle baby powder on thier trails (flour works too, but don't smell as nice). Dries thier little bodies up, and they're lots easier to sweep up. IPB Image

Posted by: skline Jan 11 2005, 04:26 PM

I dont know why you guys are having so many problems with ants, all you have to do is spray Diazinon around your house 3 or 4 times a year and they wont come back. I have no ants here at all. Cant say the same for my neighbors as they have to go somewhere. They all went over there. Not one here at my house. IPB Image

Hmmmm, the slide was reported to go all the way to the ocean....I wonder if the slide was caught in motion by this pic or if it was a two phase slide....

WOW!! IPB Image What a mess!!

the same thing happened in '95 in La Conchita....some people were smart enough to move after that !!!!!

Since 95....no bank will loan there...well MAYBE Cousin Guido's Friendly Loans and Leg Breaking.....no Insurnace company will wite ANY policy....except MAYBE Guido.

Most people are renters or retirees that don't have a lot of choices....definitely low rent....but nice views if you can stand the traffic noise.

Posted by: skline Jan 11 2005, 06:02 PM

10 years apart. Within 30 days of each other too. Coincidence? I dont think I would want to even rent there. That is just too bad.

Never mind that. When you get it built go out and collect all the animals by 2s, male and female and put them in the Ark.

RIGHT! IPB Image

30 straight hours of NO rain....two out of the ONLY three roads in and out of SB are closed until at least Friday....101 maybe open then....154 up the pass looks like longer.

101 was closed again last night to the NORTH by a tractor trailer that flipped.

Ain't it fun living in paradise???

Yikes, my wife needs to get to ventura friday morning.. Is 150 to 126 open? It appears so based on the caltrans web page, but I bet it's awful crowded if it's the only way around La Conchita.
