914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Will it Ever Stop.... Check out the floors

Posted by: joea9146 Jan 11 2005, 06:09 PM

I am putting new seats in the Car so I have to Fabricate some Brackets to mount the seats. So I decide where the brackets are going I need to remove the Tar so I have a Nice level Base and Eventually I can Tack Weld the Bracket to the floor. You know where this is going.... So I clear the Tar from Where the brackets need to go... then Clear a little more Tar and a little more Tar. So now we have a new project.... remore the Tar POR15 and paint the floors....... The Insanity Never Stops :screwy Never. One good thing is the floors are in Excellent shape.... Very happy with what I have uncovered so far only a couple of Surface rust spots that will clean up with a wire brush.... Have a look here are a few pictures IPB Image

whadda ya crying 'bout?
wish my floors looked that good

That would be nice Scott. My back yard has 4" of standing water in it right now. Things are sucky at present, but looking better. FWIW, I am very proud of you for quitting such an addictive habbit. I covered it ad nauseum my last semseter and the physiology of it is quite disturbing.

Joe,
How do you get such large pictures to post? Must be a resolution thing.

Nice floor pans!! I just did this job the week before last. My floorpans were not quite as nice, more surface rust and a few small holes rusted through. Patched them up, treated it with a phosphoric etcher and painted on the POR-15.

I found that a wire brush on my angle grinder worked very well for removing the remaining seam sealer and primer on all that metal. A small propane torch helped with peeling off the tar, though a heat gun would probably be easier.

My floorpan renewal was prompted by a brake master cylinder replacement. Its one of those "while you are in there" things to do. Just make sure you stop at some point!

I agree,

when Joe said " you know where this is going " I was sure we were going to major rust repairs on the floors, not enough good steel to weld the brackets to etc . . .

Nice floors, Joe. Nice to see people taking care of their teeners.

Joe,

I just heated up the TAR with a Propane Torch on a Low flame did a 8x10 section at a time and it just comes right up. You have to get the feel for it to much heat makes it too gooey . PS: Have a Fire Extinguisher near by Just in case.

What was the reason you removed the tar from in front of the seats? Not that I wouldn't have been tempted too, but that is how these projects get out of control. What is it about us guys, always going further then our original intentions? IPB Image

"What is it about us guys, always going further then our original intentions?"

There's so many rust traps on these little bastards I get/got the "Well hell, while I've got it this far apart, I might as well....." attitude. Before I knew what happened there was literally nothing left to take apart IPB Image .....now I just have to remember how to put it back together before senility sets in (or my beer fridge breaks causing a complete work stoppage) IPB Image

Sorry J.P., thought I used the "quote" thingy when I posted IPB Image

Floors don't really look too bad to me.

I was going to ask Scott how the quitting smoking was going....... that question got answered.

Told ya to just throw everything that contained nicotine in the trash. It would be over in less than a week.

And you wouldn't be bitin everybody's heads off.

Man thats absolutly nothing. My car before fixing it was driving around with milk jugs behind the seat so I could reach the clutch. The seat was freefloating connceted to nothing. And I almost made it into the Genisus book for being being ran over by a hit and run driver and I would be the driver and the victom. My drivers window was out for years In fla and rain turned into rust all the way around my drivers seat. I mean 360 all around it only 5in one side and 3in other was all between me and the ground. Its all better now 6month valve job and rust repair. PS I used plumbers torch and a drill with a wire wheel to get the tar off quick.

Damn, you're keeping busy, Joe. What seats are you putting in? Are you going to mount them on sliders?

Jason
I am going with the Kirkey Seats... The Kirkey Deluxe for the Driver and Kirkey Intermediate Seat for the Passenger seat. I tried to Use the Sliders from Sparco but they add to much hieght so the seats are getting bolted to some brackets that I have fabricated.

Sounds like you are getting ready for serious track duty!

Posted by: rdauenhauer Jan 13 2005, 11:40 AM

Joe if your interested I have a set of aftermarket sliders that came with my PEP boys seats that are going unused. Not sure if your after front back adjustablity or not. They are about 1" total height.
