914World.com _ 914World Garage _ First ever route 66 ramble

Posted by: vsg914 Jan 11 2005, 09:39 PM

We decided you california guys can't have all the winter fun, so a spur of the moment ramble took place on old route 66. 3 cars from OKC, and 3 cars from Tulsa met half way in Stroud, Ok. at the Rock Cafe. Ok, only six cars, but its better than 5! Stroud was a town before statehood (1907) that sold whiskey to the cowboys who came in from the ranches, and to the indians who snuck off the reservations. That stopped with statehood when alcohol was banned. In the 1950's the Rock Cafe was like the internet today. Truckers families would phone the cafe with messages, and the truckers would pick them up on their way thru, and leave messages for when they called back. Featured items on the menu are Buffalo, and Alligator burgers (I had the Gator). With no preplanned itnerary, we really did just "ramble" around town for the afternoon. It was beautiful day. 65 Degrees and partly cloudy. Rare day in January in Ok.

Your pictures bring back memories of runs with the guys here. I have not been on a good run since the Baja Run II. The get togethers are fun but theres nothing like a good run spending time together and doing things together really make a run great. I am highly motivated now to finish my car and do some runs. Thanks

Posted by: SpecialK Jan 11 2005, 10:27 PM

Nice pics Curt! I've got relatives down in Tulsa, might have to get down that way for a run someday IPB Image .

P.S. - the main drag through my town (Pacific, MO) is a section of the original Rt. 66., it kind of criss-crosses I-44 as you head SW from here.

Posted by: Series9 Jan 11 2005, 10:28 PM

That's friggin' awesome, VSG! IPB Image

I don't think there are that many 914s in all of NM IPB Image .

Me too Scott, me too.

The best part is all the roofs where removed!! Or was that just for a photo-op?
Cheers, Elliot

We took the tops off after lunch and they stayed off the rest of the day.

Kevin, Come on down. Where is Pacific? Maybe a 66 run between here and there sometime? My shop is just a mile off 66 (11th street).

Joe, There are over 25 914 daily drivers that I know of in Tulsa alone. Plenty more in Okc.

The damnest thing is that central OK doesn't have many good 914 roads (they're all in eastern Ok), and we still had a blast just cruising around with no destination.

I lived in Lawton for three years (you know, Army), and I had a 914 there. There are some very nice roads in the mountains (yes, mountains) in SW OK.

I'm about 35 miles SW of St. Louis. It's around a 6 hr. drive to Tulsa from here, but it is a very scenic trek. IPB Image

Downtown Tulsa, there used to be a little Restaurant owned by two ladies. Had seating for about 11. They would go to the market in the early AM and get everything fresh. Sign outside said "Breakfast, Lunch & Cigarettes". Is it still there?

Cool you guys hooked up and ran. Pics look great. If it wasn't 22 hours away, I would join you.

Ok Mike, Scott and the rest of you pikers....you know what it takes to put a BAJA run together and iffin ya don't, maybe Whipped (Red-Beard) will chime in.

Posted by: VegasRacer Jan 12 2005, 04:39 PM

Any of you Arizona guys up for a Route 66 Ramble? Maybe from Williams to Oatman (or vise versa)? I would gladly drive down to join you. We might even get a few of the California hard core crazies to come over.

I never get my pics posted in time! Everyone always beats me to it - so my shots look like old news. That's okay - I'll post some anyway. IPB Image

Slits, I'm pretty sure that cafe you're talking about is the same one that Leon Russell used to hang out at alot. Curt probably knows for sure.

Here is that sign again. Motels have the most creative signs around. And since they tend to stay in business forever, they are the ones that survive the longest.

Yeh, I'm old. Spent a lot of time in Tulsa........loved it........Went thru about 3 years ago and never could figure out where in the hell everything had disappeared to. Used to stay at the Four Winds? (East and West) and Days Inn at Harvey Young Airport. DISCO was in......patent leather shoes and quiana? shirts... IPB Image

How 'bout stagin' a shocker....914 Ramble in Branson, MO? IPB Image

Here we are going around the lake. I'm tailgating Kevin trying to get him to close up the gap. IPB Image

Around the lake was the only curvy road anywhere near Stroud.

914RS - you're right. There are some great roads in the Lawton/Ft. Sill area and the Wichita Mountains are some of the oldest around. I race in the 12 Miles of Hell every year and I can attest that they are definitely "mountains".

In the southeast we have the Quachita and Kiamichi mountains with hwy #1 making up the Talimnena Drive which runs for sixty miles along the ridge. Some of the best 914 blacktop in the country. Never pass up the opportunity to drive this road!

But.... unfortunately, no curvie stuff in central Oklahoma other than on/off ramps (I know the best of them intimately). IPB Image

I've got some pics returning from Stroud to post after dinner.

JR, we're going to put together an early spring ramble for Talimena Drive and will be sure to try and hookup all the north Texas folks. Here's a shot taken from hwy #1 last october. Doesn't show any curves, but in the background you can see the tops of about 3 other sets of mountains. Fantastic road. IPB Image

Trade winds motels. East, West, and Central. East and central are still there, but have different names, and are middle eastern owned now. East still has some of the best blues in town. I took flight lessons at Harvey Young. It's still there, but almost swallowed up by the urban growth.

Branson? A measley 3 1/2 hours from T town. Any of you Mo guys up for it? Gotta be a mid winter thing. Traffic sucks once all the country music shows start their season.

Joseph is correct. Ok hwy 1 (Talimena Drive) is one of the most awesome roads you'll every encounter. It's been rated as one of the top ten sports car roads in America. Runs along the very top of the mountain ridge. See my avatar. Everyone in the area, come join us. It's gonna happen. We'll set a date by the end of the month.

Dinner was good...Polish sausage & cabbage... IPB Image

On the way back from Stroud, needed some gas so we stopped in at this brand new Texaco filling station - trustin' our car to the man who wears the star...

It reminded me of this song:

"Well, I was driving down the freeway
When my car ran out of gas.
Pulled over to the station
But I was afraid to ask.
The servicemen were yellow
And the gasoline was green.
Although I knew I could not
I thought that I was gonna scream.
That was on my last trip to tulsa
Just before the snow.
If you ever need a ride there,
Be sure to let me know."

It'll never be all gone. It still runs all the way thru Tulsa. If they closed down 11th street, there would no used car lots here. IPB Image Sadly, one of the route 66 icons, Frankoma Pottery, closed last month. 66 is still in tact from Joplin Mo., thru Tulsa to Okc. It's Ok 66 now

Well come on down Gint. IPB Image It's only 12 hours... maybe 10 for you. IPB Image

I think Oklahoma has the largest amount of original route 66 remaining. I did a cruise with the local VW gang on about 60 miles of 66 last summer out to Elk City to the rt66 Museum.

The museum was okay, but really, the best part is the driving. There are places where the original 12 ft. wide concrete sections remain not far from Tulsa and OKC both. And there are a few places, like the Rock Cafe, you run across that have never been updated or renovated over the years and are living musuems that are pretty intriguing.
