914World.com _ 914World Garage _ how can i fix this?

Posted by: double-a Jan 12 2005, 12:10 PM

what part is this? i know it has something to do with the fresh air box controls, but it looks broken. what should that pivot point look like, is there a screw missing or something?

Yup, it's broken.

That metal arm used to mount on the end of that shaft and was retained by what is now broken off.

There is still a short shaft with two flats protruding from the flapper box. That shaft turns (or used to turn) diverting air either up or down....

so what broke off, a piece of plastic or a bolt or something? i bet i can tap a hole in that shaft and put a screw in there to hold that arm IPB Image

i just don't want to replace the darn thing, it looks like a royal pain to get out of there, and i just put the gas tank back in last week.

Hey Aaron, I know I have e-mailing you about some other parts, let me check to see if this one is good on my parts car. I will snap some shots of it. I don't think you can glue those? IPB Image

No easy way to fix it. A screw will work it self loose pretty quick. But then again, I can't think of any alternative. IPB Image

A piece of plastic is broken off. (I'm at work and have no pics) I am almost certain I have some of those flappers in boxes if you want a new used one. Let me know.

They really aren't that hard to get out and back in once you know how to do it. The hardest part to remove/install will be those round spring clips holding the flapper box to the defrost vent and to the blower housing (I think).

The cables are held on with those spring clips which can be a PITA, but they aren't really that hard either.

On the inside, there will be (2) 6mm nuts (10mm wrench) on the lower vent to remove, and of course you need to remove the cable ends from the flapper box with the pinch bolts.

Make sure the other flapper box moves freely or the same thing will happen to one you install. Those flappers should be EASY to move, if not, find out what is bound up and fix it.

Perhaps you bumped it when installing the gas tank?

Good luck.

If Dan doesn't have one I know for sure I have one. Late model both sides. Let me know.

You could try using a 2 part epoxy, but you would have to be careful not to glue it stuck. Worst case the epoxy wouldn't work and you would still have to replace it.

yeah, if you could take a look at what you've got, that would be great.

the epoxy idea is good, and i've got some of that stuff. i'd be afraid it would break again though. might be best to just get a new one. question is: can it be done without removing the tank?

i'm not sure how it happened, i just noticed it recently. i coulda done it, wouldn't be the first time IPB Image

Fresh air input is pretty minimal anyway. Have you considered just leaving it open (or closed)?

Nah, fix it, it would drive me nuts too. IPB Image Besides, sounds like there are plenty of spares around, so getting one for cheap won't be an issue.

Aaron, I couldn't get a good shot of the fresh air part, but mine looks fine, has a little paint overspray on it, but otherwise fine. $10 and it is yours.

Also, the 914 I was going to take the windshield trim off of has it glued on. IPB Image DAPO anyway. It will get destroyed if I remove it.

BUT, I got a pic of the tach, $15 it's yours. Looks nice, can't tell if plastic or not, but it is a late style correct for your 914.

And visors with screws and mounting thingies. They are nice, but one small tear in the drivers pocket and the mirror has come away from the visor a little. Other than that, no splits or anything.

The mirror is just dirty and is in good shape. The mirror flapper thingy is gone.
