Okay let's get the ball moving here. Portland is the official site for the 2006 WCC #3 July 7-8-9.
It is going to piggyback on the Portland Historic races, go here for more information on the historics... http://www.portlandhistorics.com/
I have spoken to the operations manager on thursday, and she is very supportive of our group using the Portland Historics as a piggyback event. She is open to suggestions and will discount group ticket sales.
Hotels are plentiful and close to the racetrack, but we need to get them booked early. Shopping and restaurants are closeby. Indoor go kart track, just up the freeway. Golf course next to the track.
The weather in July will be fabulous, warm and sunny, but not sweltering.
Volunteers will be needed and I will ask for all the help I can get.
So plan on the beautiful Pacific Northwest for the WCC 2006.

Thanks Craig. I'll be glad to help.

sounds great!
are you stepping forward to chair the event (ably assisted by a team of delegates i am sure...) or is that a decision yet to be determined ?
just for planning purposes (i looked on the PCA National site and found nithing...) when is Parade ? we MAY be able to attend one event out there, but two could be iffy...
ArtechnikA will, of course, support the event as a minor sponsor if asked ...
Craig,
What are the track fees?
Seriously, will there be any type of track participation?
Thanks for assuming the responsibility, I had a feeling you would...
way to go Craig! I knew you'd come through!
I will support the event with $ and products again as well. Will we be able to get some track time?
Thanks, Dan
You'll find a lot of helpers here. But three words, delegate, delegate, delegate. Tell us what you need done and people will jump all over it.
The only way to get track time would be to rent the track the Monday following the Historics. The expense would be considerable. The last number I heard was 6K.....but I can look into it. The Historics has "parade laps" but I don't think that's what you had in mind
Road trip!!!! This is gonna be fun. Get to see both blood and 914 kin folk.

This is a little premature, before we start telling everyone we can or cannot get track time. We need to look a little further into our options. JP has stepped up to take that lead and when we have more information it will be posted on the site.
The Portland Historics "will" have an autocross course set up. i will be attending this years races so I can observe first hand the setup and I am sure that alot of the 914 owners in the PNW will also be there to help critique the course.

QUOTE (xitspd @ Apr 30 2005, 10:09 AM) |
It was not my intention to demean AX. I have only done one AX event and that was many years ago. My results were at best mediocre. I have raced at PIR many times and I still have a lot to learn about the track in the heat of door to door competition. |
Craig, since I was the first to open my mouth to volunteer, sort of, about setting up a Portland meet, I'll volunteer to help, alot. I was waiting to see what dumbass would step up to the plate. Thanks. I'll be a dumbass and help as well.

You were runnin nose to tail with Aaron? I'm glad no one got a pic of that I *can* see time trails, but DE? Too many folks not looking in their mirrors, not waving by, doing stupid shit...just like on the freeway. AX is a much better way to learn to control your car. I know lots of guys that I respect who love DE, it's just not for me.....nor is my car set up for it, tho I still have my track tires. |
Will there be an official hotel and group rate? I was really pleased with the Hampton Inn, is there one of those up there?
(I'm not trying to be pushy, but with all the people saying "book early" I'd like to do so, and I would like to be at the place most others are staying.)
Kudos to volunteers for steppin up in Portland! I'm in and hope to have my 914 ready and DRIVE it out there. Over a year to go, it should be do-able.
QUOTE (J P Stein @ Apr 30 2005, 10:20 AM) | ||

JP, I'd love to see an A/X on Sat or Sun, open day to watch the historics and the track day on Monday.
That would be amazing and would give all attendees some options.
I have a nice a/x course you might like to see.

I hope the bulk of the holiday travelers decide to celebrate the 4th of July the weekend before. I will do everything in my power to get off work so I don't miss this sure to be great event.
As GWN7 said in another thread - it was the planned meals and parking lot free time to BS and look at cars, that balanced the other activities, and made the WCC05 a success. That is not to say that 'I really hope we can get some track time'.

I would love to do something memorable for my last flight but check this out. We had a 767 captain on his last flight do a high speed pass over the runway in Anchorage (300 knots), 60 degree bank turn for the over-head break. UPS fired the co-pilot and the international relief officer. Word was they tried to take the captains retirement but couldn't. Nice huh? I've threatened to fly my last trip NAKED! That should be good for a few laughs. Cheers, Elliot |
A full out track day on Monday would be good. Although those of you who have traveled a long distance, are going to have to drive that long distance again. The PNW guys can tell you all about this.
I agree the split registration for the Monday track is a very good way to see if we are goin gto be able to make it work or not.
The Portland Histroics autocross should be run on all three days. It should give you plenty of time to get the fix that you need.
One of the things that I kept hearing at this years event was the fact that people could stop and talk and look at the people and the cars. Something that was lacking in the first WCC. I know that the 2006 event will continue this because there are alot of people how haven' attended one of these, that will be joining us from up north.

We will do what we can Doc. Another thing I would like to throw into the mix is th eidea of a 914 for a raffle. Someone mentioned it earlier in another thread. I will look into that with some of the vendors on the site.

Hey Craig, Pamela and I were thinking Edgefield would be a thought. 114 rooms ranging from suites to hostel accomodations. Brewery, distillery, wine. 30+ acres of land, golf course, places to have group functions, display the cars, etc. Good road run up the mountain, throught the gorge, not too bad to the track. BEER, BEER, BOOZE, WINE, BEER.

I'll do my bestest to get the track for the following Monday. Youz guys do your best to get 75-80 (or more)pre paid bodies there, K?
We now have a protected forum for the 2006 WCC planning. For those of you who are willing to help, please send me a PM and I will see that you are included in the forum.
Please be prepared to help, not to just be a casual observer. We can get enough of those right here. The pay is great and the rewards are plenty. A rust free Porsche 914 is just part of the spoils that will go to those who help. Trips aboard the 914club jet are promised and food and lodging will also be included.
With that said, PM on.

i will be brutaly honest here. personally i dont think portland will do near as well as an event in california, due to several reasons... one there are people who would not drive there 914 3 hours to the wcc 05 let alone 10 or so. lets face it most 914s are in california. also portland does not have a big ticket item like vegas near by as an additional draw.
portland might be nice but you dont ever hear about portland like you do california, with mulhuland ( sp ) drive the PCH, vegas 2 hours hours away, LA to see for the first time etc.
now teri and i had a blast going the wcc but we had many things to make it better, like family to see while traveling both ways, crashing at joe's house ( both sharp and 914rs, thanks to both of ya ) getting the stand on the famous sklines drive way and vegas for the first time. for me to drive to portland is just 4 days of driving with stops at hotels. granted i might be able to stop at a few members houses but it does not have the big draws for me.
i think the worse thing to do for some thing like the wcc is to put it at any corner of the US, it just make it a longer drive for more people... and some of those wont go because of it. i would think putting the wcc in SD would be just as bad as portland. lets face it the best place is in the center of any coast not the top or the bottom.
sorry about this post but i just dont think it would be near as many people, and all the extras i got to do with the wcc 05 are not there so i would bet for others it will be the same
Howard, if you come up here for the WCC 2006 I will pay your greens fee and we will play the big guys course. I would like this to be the first year for a WCC golf tournament.

the draw is the draw scott. some people have driven 17 hours and some for longer periods . it's simple, they show or they don't. pnw owners have driven it out twice to cal. if folks can't plan 14 months out , feel their cars are untrustworthy, or if it's just too far, they can look at the pictures. i take it you have never been to our region. with canadian contingent, and the 30 odd members in the puget sound area, getting people to portland is not an issue.

I think I might actually be able to make it to this one. Of course I'll probably be on my scoot. I doubt I'll have either of my 914s running by then...
Marcie & I are in!
I've got lots of time to get the Blue car painted. If I can convince the Cap'n to let me move Dad's Car to the shop, I can probably have it real close by WCC06.
Less people would not really be a bad thing. I barely got a chance to meet a fraction of the folks at WCC05 (would have met more, but we didn't find our way to Neverland). I'm quite looking forward to getting out of CA and seeing some other part of the US. I have complete faith in Craig & Company to give us a memorable event.
Wow, can you imagine the caravan we could have moving north across the border.
There's also no reason that you need to bring a 914 to a WCC. I always see cheap flights to Portland on Southwest.
If it's too far to drive, then fly, rent a car, hang out with the people and have fun. You can drive your 914 anytime.

I've brought the idea up to another forum member already about the possibility of getting a SoCal group transport up to Portland and then just flying in on Southwest. The rig could start picking cars up in San Diego and work its way up to LA or even further up CA if enough people were interested. Yes it would cost and no I don't know how much or even if it is budget feasible-- it is just an idea at this point. Think about it-- the time involved driving, possible mishaps, backaches from driving a stiff performance car 1000+ miles, etc... , you could drive the hell out of the car in Portland on the ax, track etc... and not have to worry that it is still running well enough to get you home! Just need someone to pick us up at the airport and a place to deliver the cars. Just an idea. It might make be a sensible option to those who have a few extra nickles. I stopped tracking early at WCC05 to make sure I had enough car to make it the 3-400 miles home (gotta get some temp guages!). That said a 914 caravan up North from CA would be a heck of alot of fun, too! An adventure in itself. Just brainstorming. John
Bruce (GWN7) and I discussed meeting up in Canada shipping our cars out by train early and flying in. Sandy said the July date is better. Lookes like were in again........

Do we have to wear ugly polyester pants?
The Canadian's are in! Well, me for sure. If it's in Portland, we may even show up in 914s. Dan's car made it from Camp914 to Regina succesfully, so I'm sure we can make it back. I wonder if we can fit kegs in the trunks and have enough room left for clothes. Ah well, beer is more important. I think Portland will be a great area. We spent a bit of time on the way down, and I was more impressed with the Portland area than California. I may have to come down a few days early and do some windsurfing at the Gorge. I'm so excited!
For me the date of the last two WCC was the problem, now with a July date for 2006 this could be doable we could drive, umm 2147 miles with, at that time 4yrold, while trying to pull my 914 behind the truck Then again we could fly out

There are always tradeoffs in one venue or another. I think the PNW people showed great support for the two events held in California. Now is the time to return the favor and I'm really looking forward to it.
Being a frequent visitor to the state (in-laws live in Salem) Portland will be blast. Craig and his enthusiastic crew will put on a great event. Be prepared for spectacular scenery and a fun event.

sorry, that's just not true. there are many 914's in California but "most" are in the whole rest of the world. i for one don't think that those people should be excluded from a local event now and then. |
being about five minutes from portland, i'm in. i can help with stuff as needed, though i'm not sure what i could do.

Joe (O'Brien) and I are in. We were thinking of taking a two week road trip and making some fun stops along the way. Maybe we will head to So Cal first to make sure that Joe Sharp is in attendance, like it or not. Hopefully, we will be traveling in three 914's this time (instead of one). I do not think that I can watch another day at the track without a car to drive...thanks Leo for the offer, you rock! I hope to see all of you there. We had a blast this year and made some really great friends!
Luck
After all it 's not where we have wcc2006, it's all about the cars and the people and the common interests and getting there is half the fun the pacnw contingent made the wcc2005 somewhere to the tune of around 3000+miles, you will see some very spectactular scenery . Given the choice I would do it all over again

Mark another Canadian on the list.
Way to go Craig! This will cut our drive in half. It will be alot more "bearable" to drive a 914 through the mountains than sitting in the Audi.
From the eastside of Tucson to PDX:
Distance: 1462.8 miles
Approximate Travel Time: 22 hours 30 mins
Caravan anyone?
I am all over this one! If any one wants to meet in Truckee and cruise the cool and winding roads North jsut let me know. I used to drive a demo van for snowboards and would always take the back way. So much better.

Portland is a nice area, I will sure try to make it in my 914 (provided I don't get snowed in.....but July SHOULD be o.k.)!
This has me thinking about a nice long road trip.. never been to Yosemite.. Stop in Tahoe in the summer would be nice
I'm afraid if I go up, I won't come home. Portland is a 2nd home to me.
Summer'06 will be my big break between campusses. I'm thinking like Joe(914rs)... make the trip 2 weeks long and hit some sites, like redwoods in Norcal and Crater Lake. I've got relatives in Seatle that I might go see... I'd better give por15 a call
Anyone got website work needing to be done?

if you plan on taking some time, do ave of the giants to eureka, the coast to cresent city, c.s. to grants pass, g.p. to crater lake. come up the eastside of the cascades to mt hood and on to pland. fun drive.

All of those people driving up through Calif, be sure and stop in Willows at the Black Bear Restaurant.
You will find the drive much more bearable after the Big Bear Burger and a piece of Bearry Pie.
Or if you are there for dinner the "Cluck and Buck", my favorite.
If you miss the one in Willows you have a second chance at the one in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Maybe some microbrew. We'll have to see what we can fit in a couple of 914s. As for the thongs, it'll be both foot wear and swim wear. If I'm bringing a weekends worth of beer, and golf clubs, there ain't gonna be no room for clothes! I sure hope its warm out! |
the cute waitress at the willows store is looking for a ride in a 914. her sights were on craig i think.

The key to eating a big bear burger is getting only cheese and lettuce.
It allows the burger to stay together and doesn't fill you up on filler, the bun was the hardest part though. I'm glad I decided to not drink the gravy for the free dessert.
As for that 15 pound burger... wow! to anyone that eats that.
Well, maybe the Canadians will just have to buy a couple of kegs from the area. That would eliminate the transport problem, and allow me to bring some clothes with. Sounds like a win win situation for everybody involved.
Kevin, which waitress are you talking about? The young one, or the old one that kept calling Craig Honey?

We are tentatively planning a loop of Mt Hood. Up the mountain, through Hood River and the Gorge, stop at Edgefield(maybe) for microbrew and then back to base. An awesome drive. Could go up to Timberline as well for the view, and to see the glacier. One of my favorite drives!
a drive like that would be totally awesome... an all day trip especially stopping at Edgefield for some juice!

i'd love to actually do a drive lilke that. the 1980 Parade rallye was all around Mt Hood with the dinner at the big ski lodge at the top. i understand the scenery was beautiful -- i was the navigator on that event and it all just looked like a clipboard to me...
i have some extended family in Troutdale/Corbett, overlooking the Gorge -- beautiful area !

I did a Google search on Portland.....most important bit I found was there are 21 brewerys in Portland.
That is important! Great research Bruce! You think you'll have a 914 ready to drive out for next year? Stop in Regina, and we can convoy from here!
Yes Bruce just might be driving a V8 914 to WCC 2006. WOOHHAAA We will see.

P.S. He can find his own way home

for all of you that are going north to get there, go hwy 101 thru Sonoma wine country. It has some of the beautifulest twisty roads I have ever seen. just spent a week there and was dumbstruck with all the beauty everywhere from the old redwoods to the 500 year old oaks. you wont be dissapointed.
PS I will be there

I for one am excited about Portland. The city has a lot to offer and some spectacular drives just miles from the city. Being a global club, there is no perfect place for a gathering. I like the fact that other states get a chance to host the event. After all, California has had 2 WCC's now. July is the best time weather-wise in the NW and Portland is a relatively inexpensive city. I'll be there. Eddy

The 5-6 hour stretch from Phoenix to San Diego doesn't sound like much fun in a 914 in July! |
I really want to go to WCC 2006 AND I really want my car there. However, driving there basically adds 3 1/2 - 4 days to the trip as it is about 20+ housrs of driving from Phoenix according to Mapquest.
How about this for an idea:
We get a couple of us from the Valley that want to go. Ship the cars up to Portland. Perhaps have them delivered to a local members house? Then we fly up, taxi over get our cars and let the fun begin. Then just reverse the whole process coming home.
I do love it up there. We go up to Ocenaside Oregon every year for vacation. Beautiful country I tell ya.
Any takers on my idea?
excellent idea. just have them delivered to my house in vancouver, wa. if you're shipping a sixer, i'll need it here a couple weeks in advance so i can work out proper, uh, storage until you get here.

timberline lodge is prob one of the most interesting buildings i've ever been in. both historically and architechturally. we should consider adding it to the intinerary on the loop. nice drive up the side of the hill too.

awesome place, and we could re-enact scenes from the movie "the shining" since much of the movie was filmed there.

Maybe we could add into the drive a stop at a winery? That would give people time to mingle and sip some grape juice too. With the next WCC in P-town, there will be lots of options for some great road trips.
So when is the countdown for this going to be started and nailed? I don't know about the rest of you, but it really motivates me to get off of my ass and get the car ready...
C'mon we only have X amount of days left!!!
CAMP 914 is expanding and I will have more space in the near future. No problem with shipping cars there and they can be in a large building until the owner arrives.
MT HOOD is in the plans, I think a drive up and a photo op in the parking lot below the mountain would be great. A run back to Troutdale and then to Mcmenamins Edgefield manor are also in the works.
As far as a countdown, aim for July 7,8 and 9 2006 will work. Someone get that nailed. If it changes I will be the first to know.

with the extra days saved NOT having to drive to california , the wife and i will turn this into a week long adventure. for those into the hot springs/spa experience, carson hot springs and resort is pretty cool, and sort of funky. soaking in big old bath tubs filled with geothermal water, as hot as you can stand it, and then a wrap in muslin sheets and blankets to sweat out the takillya. there is an upscale, newer resort closer to p-land, bonneville hot springs and spa, iirc.
one thing i've never been able to figure out how to get to. on the oregon side of the gorge you can see what looks like an old castle/monestary up on the hillside above I-84. not that i think we should go there during the wcc.

Kevin I think you are refering to Maryhill Museum, check out there website, They have a vintage car hillclimb there each year. It is well worhth the trip.
You can cross over at the Dalles, or at Cascade Locks.

Hillclimb is in Sept. Very exclusive event. Fun to watch I'm told. I believe there is a website. Try searching Maryhill Hill Climb. It is on a road no longer used. I believe it is the first paved road in the state of Washington.
Kevin, are you talking about the Vista House at Crown Point. From below the round stone building looks like a "crown", sitting high on a point? Only other structure might be the Columbia Gorge Hotel near Hood River.
If a Mt. Hood Loop drive happens it will certainly include that portion of the old Columbia River Highway and the Vista House.

that may be it jim. it's more visible from the washington side when you're on hwy 14(?), which is a nice drive too.

Vista House is a public building/viewpoint (breathtaking) and rest stop built with the highway in the 20's. Being restored last time I was there so you could not go in. Maybe it will be open by 2006.
Speaking of WA SR14, if you're ever traveling it stop in Stephenson at the Big River Grill. Truly the best hamburger I have eaten. Friday a week ago I took the 914 for a run there for lunch. I go about every 6 weeks, partly for the scenic drive (ever climb Beacon Rock?) and mostly for the Big River Grill. Passed the turn to the Bonneville Spa you mentioned.
