914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WCC 2006 in Portland OFFICIAL

Posted by: boxstr Apr 30 2005, 09:23 AM

Okay let's get the ball moving here. Portland is the official site for the 2006 WCC #3 July 7-8-9.
It is going to piggyback on the Portland Historic races, go here for more information on the historics... http://www.portlandhistorics.com/
I have spoken to the operations manager on thursday, and she is very supportive of our group using the Portland Historics as a piggyback event. She is open to suggestions and will discount group ticket sales.
Hotels are plentiful and close to the racetrack, but we need to get them booked early. Shopping and restaurants are closeby. Indoor go kart track, just up the freeway. Golf course next to the track.
The weather in July will be fabulous, warm and sunny, but not sweltering.
Volunteers will be needed and I will ask for all the help I can get.
So plan on the beautiful Pacific Northwest for the WCC 2006.

sounds great!

are you stepping forward to chair the event (ably assisted by a team of delegates i am sure...) or is that a decision yet to be determined ?

just for planning purposes (i looked on the PCA National site and found nithing...) when is Parade ? we MAY be able to attend one event out there, but two could be iffy...

ArtechnikA will, of course, support the event as a minor sponsor if asked ...

Craig,

What are the track fees? laugh.gif

Seriously, will there be any type of track participation?

Thanks for assuming the responsibility, I had a feeling you would...

Posted by: lagunero Apr 30 2005, 09:54 AM

smilie_pokal.gif way to go Craig! I knew you'd come through!

Posted by: xitspd Apr 30 2005, 09:56 AM

I will support the event with $ and products again as well. Will we be able to get some track time?

Thanks, Dan

You'll find a lot of helpers here. But three words, delegate, delegate, delegate. wink.gif Tell us what you need done and people will jump all over it.

Posted by: J P Stein Apr 30 2005, 10:11 AM

The only way to get track time would be to rent the track the Monday following the Historics. The expense would be considerable. The last number I heard was 6K.....but I can look into it. The Historics has "parade laps" but I don't think that's what you had in mind biggrin.gif

This is a little premature, before we start telling everyone we can or cannot get track time. We need to look a little further into our options. JP has stepped up to take that lead and when we have more information it will be posted on the site.

The Portland Historics "will" have an autocross course set up. i will be attending this years races so I can observe first hand the setup and I am sure that alot of the 914 owners in the PNW will also be there to help critique the course.

If that figure turns out to be in the ballpark, I'd sure go for track time on Monday.

I'm so excited about this event that I can hardly wait. The only thing bad about it is that because it's the same weekend as the Sisters, OR outdoor quilt show it means that instead of driving my teener to Oregon, I'll be towing it behind our VW Eurovan Camper. I think I can handle it!

It's really a pretty gud deal.
The track supplies workers, EM, insurance (we think...my contact says).....subject to availability of the site, of course.
If guys really want the track, there will have to be a committment in advance. Not enuff bodies in advance, no track.

The AX equiptment is OK....been doing some phone calling.
Their AX is a charity event. 5 bucks a run, but we may be able to bundle runs into a package price for the WWC contingent.
Having said all this, there are some issues. I wouldn't have anyone in the group run that clusterfuck they had last year.
It was short and unsafe.....I came slithering around a sweeper to find some guy driving parallel to me bout 10 feet away w00t.gif I gots some work to do here.

It was not my intention to demean AX. I have only done one AX event and that was many years ago. My results were at best mediocre. I have raced at PIR many times and I still have a lot to learn about the track in the heat of door to door competition.

JP,

Actually I would prefer the parade for my concept show car. If I brought the V8 the track would be cool. The problem for people with track cars is hauling all the tools and spares.

If you add the track event on a Monday, I'd suggest you separate the fee(s). I know you want to encourage everyone to stay for the full duration but you may discourage some participants.

JP....At this event, "newbies" were put with instructors, first on a skid pad, then on the track. The idea was to teach them limits of their cars on the pad. The track sessions showed them the racing line....At all times, it was pounded into their heads.."Stay on the line and WATCH your mirrors." There were two passing areas designated and they were told that if a faster car was approaching ('cause they watched their mirrors), to lift, signal the side to pass and let them pass. No one was turned loose until the instructor was satisfied that they fully understood. Yeh, I was an instructor.

The only two infractions I saw were not from the "newbie" groups, but from the purported "real racer" group. Two of them would signal for a left pass on the straight and then pull to the left blocking the pass.

For the remainder of the participants, who understood and followed the "rules", I can only give many KUDOs for a very safe job well done.

EDIT: I almost forgot...The Track workers were awesome and contributed greatly to the safety also.

Will there be an official hotel and group rate? smile.gif I was really pleased with the Hampton Inn, is there one of those up there?

As GWN7 said in another thread - it was the planned meals and parking lot free time to BS and look at cars, that balanced the other activities, and made the WCC05 a success. That is not to say that 'I really hope we can get some track time'.

I would love to do something memorable for my last flight but check this out. We had a 767 captain on his last flight do a high speed pass over the runway in Anchorage (300 knots), 60 degree bank turn for the over-head break. UPS fired the co-pilot and the international relief officer. Word was they tried to take the captains retirement but couldn't. Nice huh? I've threatened to fly my last trip NAKED! That should be good for a few laughs.

A full out track day on Monday would be good. Although those of you who have traveled a long distance, are going to have to drive that long distance again. The PNW guys can tell you all about this.
I agree the split registration for the Monday track is a very good way to see if we are goin gto be able to make it work or not.
The Portland Histroics autocross should be run on all three days. It should give you plenty of time to get the fix that you need.

One of the things that I kept hearing at this years event was the fact that people could stop and talk and look at the people and the cars. Something that was lacking in the first WCC. I know that the 2006 event will continue this because there are alot of people how haven' attended one of these, that will be joining us from up north.

Please be prepared to help, not to just be a casual observer. We can get enough of those right here. The pay is great and the rewards are plenty. Take a look at Arizona Bus Club to get an idea of what another car club does. If you look at the Jerome 2004 Bus you'll get an idea of what the club put into the vehicle to get it ready for the raffle. In the early years the busses that were raffled were much rougher and not restored much, if at all, but it's become more sophisticated over time.

The raffle bus is quite a production - not only in getting the vehicle ready, but the whole raffle itself.

It is the concluding event of each year's Jerome Jamboree. You have to be present to win. Everyone gathers around the bus and they read off the first 3 of 6 numbers. If you match those, you step up and put your hand on the bus. As they read each of the succeeding numbers, folks walk away if they don't have a match, until hopefully there is just one person left. If they don't get a match on all numbers, the process starts over again.

Last year's winner was the last person at the bus with 1 number left, but didn't match. They drew again and she ended up being the last person again - only this time the last number matched!

After the drawing, it's a tradition that all the "losers" toss their tickets into the bus to give the winner some "fun" with having to clean out the bus!

i will be brutaly honest here. personally i dont think portland will do near as well as an event in california, due to several reasons... one there are people who would not drive there 914 3 hours to the wcc 05 let alone 10 or so. lets face it most 914s are in california. also portland does not have a big ticket item like vegas near by as an additional draw.

portland might be nice but you dont ever hear about portland like you do california, with mulhuland ( sp ) drive the PCH, vegas 2 hours hours away, LA to see for the first time etc.

now teri and i had a blast going the wcc but we had many things to make it better, like family to see while traveling both ways, crashing at joe's house ( both sharp and 914rs, thanks to both of ya ) getting the stand on the famous sklines drive way and vegas for the first time. for me to drive to portland is just 4 days of driving with stops at hotels. granted i might be able to stop at a few members houses but it does not have the big draws for me.

i think the worse thing to do for some thing like the wcc is to put it at any corner of the US, it just make it a longer drive for more people... and some of those wont go because of it. i would think putting the wcc in SD would be just as bad as portland. lets face it the best place is in the center of any coast not the top or the bottom.

sorry about this post but i just dont think it would be near as many people, and all the extras i got to do with the wcc 05 are not there so i would bet for others it will be the same

Hey Craig, Pamela and I were thinking Edgefield would be a thought. 114 rooms ranging from suites to hostel accomodations. Brewery, distillery, wine. 30+ acres of land, golf course, places to have group functions, display the cars, etc. Good road run up the mountain, throught the gorge, not too bad to the track. BEER, BEER, BOOZE, WINE, BEER.

Gary

Nico and I stayed at McMenamins Edgefield in February. The complex is great, off the beaten path, and secure... if parking lots are issues for you. They have their own winery, distillery, brewery, several restaurants, cinema draft-house, massage... And it's really affordable, as well. My $.02, this would really be a place to look into.

sorry, that's just not true. there are many 914's in California but "most" are in the whole rest of the world. i for one don't think that those people should be excluded from a local event now and then. it is similarly not written that everyone must attend every event every year. sometimes it'll be worth making The Big Trip to a special venue, and sometimes it's nice having one in your (figurative) back yard.

they will have cycles. this year's event -- and the ones in 2000, 2002, and 2004, DIDN'T have much participation from the Pacific NorthWest. give them a chance to host a local event. some people won't come from far away, and i don't think any WCC planner is seriously anticipating a big inrush of people fro anywhere on the Atlantic coast. give 'em a shot. this whole process is very new. if it sucks, we'll think seriously about doing it again. i think they're going to put on a great event, and i'm much more excited about the Portland area than i was about this year's venue (i lived in SoCal for 30 years, it's a nice place to be from...)

are you coming to this year's East Coast Ramble in VT ?

Posted by: rhodyguy May 1 2005, 10:39 AM

the draw is the draw scott. some people have driven 17 hours and some for longer periods wink.gif . it's simple, they show or they don't. pnw owners have driven it out twice to cal. if folks can't plan 14 months out wacko.gif , feel their cars are untrustworthy, or if it's just too far, they can look at the pictures. i take it you have never been to our region. with canadian contingent, and the 30 odd members in the puget sound area, getting people to portland is not an issue.

I've got lots of time to get the Blue car painted. If I can convince the Cap'n to let me move Dad's Car to the shop, I can probably have it real close by WCC06.

Less people would not really be a bad thing. I barely got a chance to meet a fraction of the folks at WCC05 (would have met more, but we didn't find our way to Neverland). I'm quite looking forward to getting out of CA and seeing some other part of the US. I have complete faith in Craig & Company to give us a memorable event.

Wow, can you imagine the caravan we could have moving north across the border. w00t.gif

There's also no reason that you need to bring a 914 to a WCC. I always see cheap flights to Portland on Southwest.

If it's too far to drive, then fly, rent a car, hang out with the people and have fun. You can drive your 914 anytime.

I've brought the idea up to another forum member already about the possibility of getting a SoCal group transport up to Portland and then just flying in on Southwest. The rig could start picking cars up in San Diego and work its way up to LA or even further up CA if enough people were interested. Yes it would cost and no I don't know how much or even if it is budget feasible-- it is just an idea at this point. Think about it-- the time involved driving, possible mishaps, backaches from driving a stiff performance car 1000+ miles, etc... , you could drive the hell out of the car in Portland on the ax, track etc... and not have to worry that it is still running well enough to get you home! Just need someone to pick us up at the airport and a place to deliver the cars. Just an idea. It might make be a sensible option to those who have a few extra nickles. I stopped tracking early at WCC05 to make sure I had enough car to make it the 3-400 miles home (gotta get some temp guages!). That said a 914 caravan up North from CA would be a heck of alot of fun, too! An adventure in itself. Just brainstorming. John

IMHO; if you separate the track fee you won't get 80 cars unless you have a bigger showing than we did. We were supposed to have 75 and I thought it would drift up to 80. We had 65 914clubbers plus 5 invited POC instructors show up. I think a lot of the guys went to the track because it wasn't costing anything extra and were glad they went, but if they had the choice ahead of time to not go and save some money then CSOBitis would have prevailed. .02c, adjust for inflation.

I agree with Scott and don't understand why Art is rebutting, but I believe the draw is existing and new friendships. It doesn't have to be fair, more 914's, or better location. Maybe some microbrew. We'll have to see what we can fit in a couple of 914s.

All of those people driving up through Calif, be sure and stop in Willows at the Black Bear Restaurant.
You will find the drive much more bearable after the Big Bear Burger and a piece of Bearry Pie.
Or if you are there for dinner the "Cluck and Buck", my favorite.
If you miss the one in Willows you have a second chance at the one in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Mike:

I assure you, you don't need to worry about bring micro brew with you. Portland is the capital of North West micro-brewing. There is a wide local regional, and international selection available here. We are very beer spoiled here in Portland. You may also have an easier time getting through customs at the US border, without trying to run across the boarder like Burt Reynolds in the movie Gator.

The key to eating a big bear burger is getting only cheese and lettuce.
It allows the burger to stay together and doesn't fill you up on filler, the bun was the hardest part though. I'm glad I decided to not drink the gravy for the free dessert.

As for that 15 pound burger... wow! pray.gif to anyone that eats that.

Well, maybe the Canadians will just have to buy a couple of kegs from the area. That would eliminate the transport problem, and allow me to bring some clothes with. Sounds like a win win situation for everybody involved. biggrin.gif

oh well... they're just gonna have to do with out me at the office
We're not gonna miss another one...

May and June are still rainy months in Portland. July and August are typically best months for no to little rain, but youre never safe there. I had a couple rainy 4th of July's when I lived in Portland.

A couple things to remeber with Portland and July time frame. For most of us Californians it means going up I 5 to make time. July and California Central Valley all the way up through Southern OR during that time of month will likely be a blast furnance. Not a problem for you people who plan to tow, but 914's without air will be in for a interesting trip. Something for you V8 guys running hot Chevy engines to think about too. Guess some of Nor Cal people could drive it during the evening or take much longer coastal routes. Lets just hope we have a cool July next year! Regardless I'll be there I still have lots of good freinds in that town and would love to see them.

Portland on the other hand will be beautiful in July. I'd love to see a drive around Mount Hood on one of the days. Getting onto the Track in Portland would be a blast as well.

Posted by: drgchapman May 3 2005, 12:11 PM

We are tentatively planning a loop of Mt Hood. Up the mountain, through Hood River and the Gorge, stop at Edgefield(maybe) for microbrew and then back to base. An awesome drive. Could go up to Timberline as well for the view, and to see the glacier. One of my favorite drives!

I for one am excited about Portland. The city has a lot to offer and some spectacular drives just miles from the city. Being a global club, there is no perfect place for a gathering. I like the fact that other states get a chance to host the event. After all, California has had 2 WCC's now. July is the best time weather-wise in the NW and Portland is a relatively inexpensive city. I'll be there. Eddy driving.gif

I really want to go to WCC 2006 AND I really want my car there. However, driving there basically adds 3 1/2 - 4 days to the trip as it is about 20+ housrs of driving from Phoenix according to Mapquest.

How about this for an idea:

We get a couple of us from the Valley that want to go. Ship the cars up to Portland. Perhaps have them delivered to a local members house? Then we fly up, taxi over get our cars and let the fun begin. Then just reverse the whole process coming home.

I do love it up there. We go up to Ocenaside Oregon every year for vacation. Beautiful country I tell ya.

Any takers on my idea?

CAMP 914 is expanding and I will have more space in the near future. No problem with shipping cars there and they can be in a large building until the owner arrives.

MT HOOD is in the plans, I think a drive up and a photo op in the parking lot below the mountain would be great. A run back to Troutdale and then to Mcmenamins Edgefield manor are also in the works.

As far as a countdown, aim for July 7,8 and 9 2006 will work. Someone get that nailed. If it changes I will be the first to know. biggrin.gif

with the extra days saved NOT having to drive to california rolleyes.gif, the wife and i will turn this into a week long adventure. for those into the hot springs/spa experience, carson hot springs and resort is pretty cool, and sort of funky. soaking in big old bath tubs filled with geothermal water, as hot as you can stand it, and then a wrap in muslin sheets and blankets to sweat out the takillya. there is an upscale, newer resort closer to p-land, bonneville hot springs and spa, iirc.

one thing i've never been able to figure out how to get to. on the oregon side of the gorge you can see what looks like an old castle/monestary up on the hillside above I-84. not that i think we should go there during the wcc.

Hillclimb is in Sept. Very exclusive event. Fun to watch I'm told. I believe there is a website. Try searching Maryhill Hill Climb. It is on a road no longer used. I believe it is the first paved road in the state of Washington.

Kevin, are you talking about the Vista House at Crown Point. From below the round stone building looks like a "crown", sitting high on a point? Only other structure might be the Columbia Gorge Hotel near Hood River.

If a Mt. Hood Loop drive happens it will certainly include that portion of the old Columbia River Highway and the Vista House.

Vista House is a public building/viewpoint (breathtaking) and rest stop built with the highway in the 20's. Being restored last time I was there so you could not go in. Maybe it will be open by 2006.
Speaking of WA SR14, if you're ever traveling it stop in Stephenson at the Big River Grill. Truly the best hamburger I have eaten. Friday a week ago I took the 914 for a run there for lunch. I go about every 6 weeks, partly for the scenic drive (ever climb Beacon Rock?) and mostly for the Big River Grill. Passed the turn to the Bonneville Spa you mentioned.
