that Euro plate and the spotless garage suggest that photo was not taken in the US.

it's a little known fact that the European swallow can travel up to 200 mph, as they are not migratory...

with a fast enough bird, that car couldda been parked.

hitting a 5-lb bird at even 100 mph would be unpleasant.

Is that an African or European swallow?

Was it unladen?

Posted by: SLITS Jun 22 2005, 11:45 AM

Obviously the bird was trying to answer the phone.

German car
word is that the car was going about 140mph at impact...

i believe it was a European swallow, although a cocoanut would certainly have contributed to the damage...

Looks kinda like a Pheasant to me after a close range 12 gauge shotgun blast.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Jun 22 2005, 12:56 PM

How was it carrying a coconut? Did the swallow grip it by the husk? And how can a tiny swallow carry a coconut?

It looks to me like a windshield impact test done in a lab.

Posted by: tat2dphreak Jun 22 2005, 01:23 PM

are you suggesting that a 10 oz swallow could carry a 2 lb. coconut?

it's not a question of where he grips it, it's a simple matter of weight ratios

Posted by: airsix Jun 22 2005, 01:24 PM

I saw a sage grouse (about 6lb typical weight) do almost the same damage to a GMC Suburban windshield. Impact was at about 70mph. Penetration was partial.

It's not the swallow that was carrying a coconut. It's the rube behind the knight who was chasing the swallow to figure out the bird's speed to gain permission to cross a bridge . . .

Posted by: grantsfo Jun 22 2005, 01:37 PM

Yikes! I know I have had my Boxster up to 155 MPH. That impact must have been over 100 mph.

Posted by: synthesisdv Jun 22 2005, 01:42 PM

at least that duck had good aim, man that is a dead on center hit.

Listen. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a swallow needs to beat its wings forty-three times every second, right?
