914World.com _ 914World Garage _ New here couple questions?
Posted by: thecleanoutking May 19 2024, 07:25 PM
Greetings all, I recently purchased a 1974 914 with a stock 1.8 FI I found this forum in doing research on parts and tech advice. So I signed up and here I am..
I do belong to a few other sites that are helpful with other cars and I seem to be having issues when searching ..
So it may be user error but I seem to be having trouble when search on here..
Currently trying to figure out why I have no brake lights, so I simply searched on here "No Brake Lights" or brake switches or brake lights..
I get thousands of threads and sometimes it will take me reading dozens of post's just to find anything related..
Maybe I'm searching wrong, I usually just go on the main page and hit search and type in a term..
Am I doing something wrong, any and all help is appreciated

Did you actually put quotes around your search terms? Because when i search for "No Brake Lights" with quotes, i only get 3 pages worth of results.
From the search page:

That link goes no where. Did you check the light bulbs? The switch at the master cylinder might be bad. How many miles are on the car?
Posted by: thecleanoutking May 19 2024, 08:45 PM
Thanks "quotations" around the term help as well, I did not do that at first, thanks.. yes, checked bulbs, fuses, I suspect the switch at the pedal but not 100% sure how to test a switch, searching now..

Power to rear tail lights is on the drivers side in the engine bay..
Then to the relay board
Then to the pedal
Then to the fuse
Test at all locations for power.
Quick test, based upon how nice the car looks would be your grounds at the taillights them selves.
Btw, find all the main grounding points, clean them well…it’s 50 years old
And

Awesome, another original 1.8!
You have a few of us on here keeping these things alive as designed

yeah but there is a price for helping.
he has to give wonkipop vital historical data concerning his car and feed it down the historical rabbit hole.
no worries
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=28109 we can help you.
and there is even a topic in the originality section that will tell you everything about your 74 1.8 you never wanted or needed to know.
nice looking car.

Great find and the boys/girls here will be very helpful. Starting with a Haynes manual is a good start
Posted by: Spoke May 20 2024, 05:14 AM
Besides wiring and a fuse, the brake lights are controlled by a switch under the pedal board in the cabin connected to the brake pedal. Maybe start there.

Thanks, everyone for the words of encouragement..
I've always loved these cars and being a VW man I actually had a bus with a similar motor once which my friend an I rebuilt. Obviously I can tell right off the bat I see many differences..
This car was somewhat of an impulse buy, wasn't really even looking just searching marketplace one morning as I do most mornings and I saw it listed 30 min ago in the next town over..
I did a little boning up online about what to look for, shot over looked it over drove it made the guy an offer he said yes..
I wish I'd have done a bit more looking it over and the guy selling it was a little bit of a fast talking salesman who kinda lied about a few things but all in all its a pretty solid car with everywhere i look it doesn't seem to be missing a lot..
The paint job re-sell red looks nice but its a fast job with lots of sprayed bolts, and a few places they didn't tape so good but its mine now..
After day one when I broke the door handle off in my hand I wasn't so sure but now a few weeks in i'm starting to love and admire her more and more, so i think I'll stick with it for a while..
Glad this place and you all are here to help, thanks..
I think his name here is cabinetmaker, look him up he can help you with door handles and locks

Oh..thanks...I already got one off ebay and installed it, the door panels very similar to some vw's I've had and everything went as expected....
Cost me about $100 with shipping for a nice used one..

Can you show us the motor? I noticed a few things that are off for a 74 1.8

Sometimes the little lever on the brake switch gets bent and the brake pedal doesn't actuate the switch.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=26011 has got pilots eyes!
he spotted the rear badge, the metal charcoal can on fuel tank and the silver dot dials.
yeah thats a 73 you got there
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=28109 . a 1.7 d-jet engine.
going off the engine and the clues above anyway.
maybe has had a set of new bumpers off a 74 fitted with the tits at both ends.
vin number would tell you. first three numbers. 473 = 73. 474 = 74.
looks like its loaded up though. console etc. probably off a 2.0
if there is little rust in it you have done well.
EDIT
it might be a real early 73 since its only got 914 on rear badge.
the first few cars of 73 were like that. no 1.7 badge fitted. if it is the last 5 numbers on the Vin will be real low.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=28109
except i just looked at more of the photos. can only read the windscreen tag.
vin is 474. so= 74. last 5 numbers are 07968 = vin range for the very first of the 74 L jet 1.8s. early to mid nov 73.
but its got a 73 engine and some other 73 features.
Posted by: Van B May 20 2024, 11:35 PM
This is one I found a while back and added to the vin database. Definitely a 74 vin, but not 74 equipment. Looks like a lot of goodie’s were added to the interior and the tach and temp gauge were replaced. Speedo looks correct though.

Pics suggest a solid car, but I'd still pull the rockers to see how the longs look if you haven't done so already.
