914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Is this a good deal?

Posted by: nine14cats Aug 27 2003, 12:25 PM

Doing a quick check to see if this sounds like a good deal....

My race trailer is an open Texas Bragg with a tire carrier up front...lightweight, low and works great....except that I'm a lazy bastard and I don't want to load and unload all of my support equipment everytime I go racing.

I have found a 20' enclosed trailer, dual axle, with a beaver tail and cabinets for ~$3.5K to $4K (I'm still negotiating price). The trailer is in great shape.

My question:

Is this a good price....it seems to be...but just checking....

Who made it ??

TPD
Featherlight
WellsCargo
Hallmark

Just to name a few.

That is a really good price.

B,

The logo on the trailer says Timberwolf. It looks like a Haulmark to me.

Ever heard of Timberwolf?

I am also loooking for a inclosed trailer. I have spoken to Timber Wolf's home office the nearest dealer is about 40 miles from me. that trailer seems to be handled by some Halmark dealers as a less expensive
model. Your price is very good it seems to me.
I got a price of $4,200.00 for a basic 16 foot U.S. Cargo.
All decked out with the goodie packages $5,400.00
Used trailers around here bring almost as much as new. So my advice is to go for it. My 2 cents

Bill,

Will you be selling your open trailer if you get your hands on an enclosed unit? If so, how much would you be asking for it? I'm going to be in the market sometime within the next two months and I'm starting to ask around. Thanks,

Nick

I'll definitely be selling my trailer if I land this other one....I'll snap a pic of it tonight and post a pic of it in the next few days....It's a nice one...dual drop axle, tire carrier, tool box...it's only 1 year old....Texas Bragg 16'.

Cool, sounds like a nice one. 16' would be just right, I don't need this big assed thing... Definately post the pic when you have a chance.

I'd say go for it.
Repack the wheel bearings, check all the steel underneath for cracks, check the brakes, you're in business. wink.gif
I have a 20' enclosed. You'll be surprised how much junk you end up piling in because you have room. Check the loaded weight. I think it's Sherborne (?) makes a little gauge for about $100 so you can adjust the tongue weight. I ended up moving my car back about 6" and took almost 200# off the tongue. I tow with a p/u and added Air Lifts to it this year that cost about $200.

I have a 20 ft. enclosed Haulmark we bought new for $4,500 picked up at the factory in Arizona. It's 7500 gvw which is good enough for a 914. Sounds like your used one would be a good deal if you can keep it closer to $3,500. Mine has no cabinets so that would be extra over what I paid.

Bill,

It's important to find a trailer that fits your space needs, but don't forget your towing needs.

Weight and a flat front trailer will cost you big time. My buddy, who races a 911 in historics, had a totally enclosed trailer that was just wonderful from the viewpoint of space. It had all the cabinets, etc. and was a great place to put stuff and organize racing gear.

Unfortunately it had a flat front and was heavy so his tow vehicle got about 10mph, or less, regardless of where he went.

If you have a turbo Ford or Chevy the weight and mileage thing won't be such a critical issue, but if remember right you have a burb like mine (454) so mileage and towing weight will be an issue.

A heavy trailer will start getting to you after you start dragging it all over the country. The weight and mileage thing will end up being a huge factor long after the idea of having all that space has evaporated.

My next tow vehicle is going to be a big Ford or Chevy diesel with gobs of power and good mileage.

And the ideal trailer would break wind, not hold it back.

If you want to check used trailer prices, check the trucks and misc section of Ebay Motors. They are always several in there.
