Many of us here in the Bay Area have seen that car...last I heard (a year ago) the price was $45K...which was a reduction from the previous price...

It looks 10X better in person than any photo ...

These cars are not 'investments'...as the print says rolleyes.gif

"$135K invested"...."Buy It Now for $38K"

You could not replicate this car for $38K.

Dont get the wrong impression...I dont know this owner...and I am not on a commission...

wow- holy moly (we need a jaw dropping smiley!)

water cooled 3.8? freaking nuts! driving.gif

Id loose the polished wheels. But that is a beauty.

do they make 17 inch fuchs??? huh.gif

Posted by: redshift Aug 27 2003, 09:54 PM

I haven't seen that one since December, it didn't sell for $32k back then.

I love that car, minus the roll bar.

Bowlsby is dead on. I've seen the car as a part of a temp Porsche show exhibit here in the Bay Area (during the Blackhawk concourse). The car is all that and more. Quite possibly one of the top 5 914s on earth. ohmy.gif

Posted by: seanery Aug 27 2003, 10:01 PM

I'd be in if I won the lottery, or got a big effin check from someone!

Posted by: redshift Aug 27 2003, 10:03 PM

It's a dream car, I could have almost afforded it at the time, funny how life smacks you around, not really.

I wanted that car badly.

I cannot stop drooling everytime I see that car, I wonder if itll ever find a good home?

Posted by: Charles Deutsch Aug 27 2003, 10:38 PM

That is a beautiful car but check out John2kx's V-8 powered teener in the http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=8&st=640 thread. That one looks almost as nice, to my eyes.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Aug 27 2003, 10:42 PM

I just spoke with the auto broker who is handling the sale and he confirmed that it got as high as 32K last year on e-bay and the owner decided to try again "next year"! He said that the owner (Ernie) put 8K into it over the winter and is planning on 38k minimum this year!

I want it!! wub.gif lol

We need an icon with a burning pocket face!!

Jeff

Posted by: Brad Roberts Aug 27 2003, 10:44 PM

I like the car.. but the bolt in cage sucks.

B

Posted by: Scott Aug 27 2003, 10:46 PM

A guy, last name King, was the original owner/builder of the car. He lives, I think, in the Oakland area. It was featured in Excellence Magazine and later there were ads with it for sale there also. The guys at Parts Heaven know King, I think they sold him a lot of the parts. I have talked to him a couple time over the past few years. He's a pretty cool guy. I guess that times are tough for him too.

Posted by: Jeffs9146 Aug 27 2003, 10:54 PM

If you look at the front trunk pictures, it looks like it was hit! Maybe thats what he spent the 8K on this winter!?

Hmm...... maybe if I sell my house I could afford a very small garage and that car, we could live there. Our love would sustain us.....

Is it just me or was it yellow at one time? Check out the flecks on the bottom of the floor where the undercoating is missing....http://www.carbuffs.com/porsche58.jpg.

I'll bet they had to put the big engine in it to make up for the speed that was lost when they changed the color from yellow. mueba.gif

I heard that YPAF.

Rick

Posted by: URY914 Aug 28 2003, 06:57 AM

Good eye. it was yellow.
The Excellance articale shows early pics of it.

Paul

Posted by: Rockaria Aug 28 2003, 08:43 AM

Very Nice indeed, But It still is just like my 914, and built like I do things...

Notice its missing a screw to hold on the door lock mechanism! "Screws, SCREWS, We don't need no stinkin' three screws..." Just like mine. I only noticed becuase my mechanism spring broke last night and I had to dissasemble the door. I wonder what else is missing from that silver beauty? Yes I also noticed the drivers inner wheel well looks like something had happened to it.

what are the cooling fans up front for (if its not water cooled) trans cooler? oil cooler?

here:

my guess is for the olio .

Posted by: Rockaria Aug 28 2003, 08:56 AM

It looks to me like added electric fans for the oil cooler. Car show option for doing a lot of slow 4th of July parade like driving? Though when I do a cooler I will add electric fans as well. In the 110 Degree summer heat, the freeway gets pleanty of cool, but the cooler would be useless in town driving without the fans. "Like I would ever take this $38K car out of my garage..." unsure.gif

Posted by: anthony Aug 28 2003, 08:56 AM

I'll second Bolwsby's comments. Pics don't do this car justice. It's flawless. The owner, Ernie, is also a super nice guy. If only my house would quickly appreciate another $50K. :-)

BTW, how much would a wine and cheese weenie pay for that 3.8L Jerry Woods engine?

3,6L engines have -no- engine mounted oil cooler like earlier 911's did. -all- the oil cooling is done with the front-mounted cooler.

Posted by: ArtechnikA Aug 28 2003, 09:28 AM

it's easy to say $135k "invested" if you add up all the money ever spent. I've "invested" over $100 in oil filters - $8 at a time... it's also easy to count up things done over and over until you get it right -- how many people go through 3 sets of shocks until they find the package they like? KYB->Tokico->Koni->Bilstein is a typical progression ... all you can really count is what's on the car NOW.

that said i agree it's a really nice car. but if i had $38k to spend on a 914.6, i'd be spending it on mine ...

Posted by: AZ914 Aug 28 2003, 10:32 AM

It figures. I should have read the whole ad.

Posted by: LvSteveH Aug 28 2003, 10:45 AM

Put it this way, a picture of that car replaced Estella Warren and Anna Kournakova on my computer desktops six months ago. I think my wife was more comfortable with the half dressed girls than that car, because there were clearly stronger feelings for the car. I felt like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, I clearly had unhealthy feelings for it…. My Precious, Precious Car! It’s mine I tell you…. All Mine! Well, for $38K it could be mine. It doesn't seem right to put a price on something so "Precious".

mueba.gif

Posted by: Joe Ricard Aug 28 2003, 10:47 AM

It's been said here before, "yellow cars are faster". does it still count if it is painted silver over the top?

I remember the car featured in Excellence. Will have to dig that copy up, Just to dream all over again.

This is a clear case of getting wrapped up in a car to the point it sinfull to take it out and "drive it like you stole it."

Try Excellence issue #53 1995, A King's 914-6. I spoke with the owner when originally for sale. I beleive it was around $40K at the time, maybe more. I put it into the perspective of the person who has the funds to purchase this car, has the funds to make or at least start a car that is exactly to there specifications. Allbeit yellow rather than silver, or black rather than yellow, weld in cage rather than bolt in. Etc.
For those of you who have started down the long road to the 914 of your dreams, take from this one soem of the really trick things and add them to your list of must have's. But one thing don't lose sight of what "your" 914 is going to look like.

I'd buy this car if I thought some wine and cheese lover would pay big bucks for that Jerry Woods 3.8L engine. Then, I'd put in a stock 3.2.

Posted by: redshift Aug 28 2003, 04:11 PM

I like MFI.

M

Posted by: ein 6er Aug 28 2003, 05:37 PM

ok a screw is missing.

point it out to the seller and maybe he will knock ... $2.00 of the price!!

that screw may be in the side mirror!! aren't they similar??

The door pic shows something else.....

They used the wrong nut on the door handle. Its supposed to have a steel lock nut. It also didnt have a washer.

That's it. The car's all f*cked up. Strip it, scrap it, start over.

Brad
out of all of us, you'd prolly know....

how much would an Engine like that from J Woods go for anyway?

Posted by: redshift Aug 29 2003, 12:21 AM

About $24k

M

Posted by: Brad Roberts Aug 29 2003, 12:56 AM

Miles nailed it... at least 25k.

B

Is a car with this much horsepower really controllable? What about in the wet?

Why didn't he upgrade the seats I wonder?

And the rollcage. Is that really necessary for the street (car obviously isn't for the track or it would need fuel cell, cut off switches, etc)?

With a cage like that, would someone taller than 6'2" fit?

Looks like a lot of work. I saw someone do that to a '74 911 all out, and they got $30k for it despite having a legitimate $80k in it. Tough.

well, what about in the wet ? get good tires, learn to drive, learn throttle discipline.
there's nothing magick about driving in the wet you can't learn by driving on ice ...

maybe he liked the stock seats; i do.

there is rarely a firm set of rules about when a cage is "necessary" outside something like the PCA Zone 7 or 8 DE/TT competition series. you can drive a car like that on the track in a TracQuest event or similar Driver's Ed events in many parts of the country without a cage being "necessary" although at some point it starts to seem like a really good idea. you don't need kill switches, fire bottles, fuel cells, window nets, or any of those other things to enjoy the car at speed in a proper on-track DE event. just because it isn't 'obviously' "for the track" doesn't mean it's never been (or couldn't be) driven there.

as for size - i donno. i'm not 6'2" so it wouldn't be a factor for me.

yes - cars like these are for personal pleasure. they are not investments. as such, you prepare them the way you like, enjoy them, sell them for what you can get when you decide it's time for something else.

Sell them??????????? 914's?
