I have a 73 914/4 with a bad leak down ( O.K. gone) on 3-4 head.How do you feel about a single head grind or replacement? The owner of this car is into it for $7000.00 including paint. The car is real nice and in good shape. They are out of funds.

Hi Dave, nice to see you here. This is a text book case of, "If ya do one, might as well do the other". Of course, that depends on the condition of the good head, but Id be inclined to do both. Just my opinion

How is other side? Good compression? If so repair just one side.

I'd just fix the one, if inspection revealed that the other was in pretty good shape.

If money is really tight, there are good used 1.7s out there. That would hold the owner over until he could spend the $$ to get the heads tip-top.

Thanks to all, The leak down on # 1-2 was holding 80 psi. I'm not sure where I should take the reading as far as psi. I have the heat exchangers off and and let's say that it made a nice breeze here at the shop testing # 3-4. I think exhaust valves/guides finally gave up. anyways , that side is toast.
I have a number of heads here of unknown condition. Find the best and get it going. Remember the zero dollar issue.

One more thing, I did a compression test that said it was # 4 with 60 psi less than the others.But if the valves where stuck, wouldn't that give me a false reading?

Yes, it would. Check the condition of the valves, look for burning or excessive wear at the valve seats.
You could just lap the valves so they seat better and it will run for awhile. Better than nothing I guess. Look at the cylinder walls for scoring when you have it apart too.
