So i was driving to work this morning in the topless 914 (BTW, it snowed 2 days ago) and in front of me on the freeway was a brand new Carrera 4 Cabriolet. He pulled into the lane in front of me, looked in his rear view mirror and gave me the wave. I thought it was pretty cool, since he regcognized the 914 from his rear view mirrior.
I have been receiving the wave more recently it seems. and it's kind of nice to know that are ugly stepchild of a car is being recognized by other porsche owners.
Ugly stepchild?!?!?! Blasphemy!
I think everyone's been giving the wave since the lakewood drivers ed incident. At least that's when people started giving me the wave. They even honk a few times when I pass 'em.
And how often is often. Twice a week? That could be often for some things but not often enough for others.
I'm going to put often anyway, and see if anyone calls me on it.
Back in the day it was a headlight thing.
No. The headlight wink is for other cars that can wink. Except honda del sols. Fiats and what not. I've never winked at a fiero. They're outcasts too.
EJM said after I mentioned to him that some guy in a 911 waved to me,while I was driving the 914...."naw he was just showing you his Rolex"
Deflated
Never on the 'street' unless it's a 914 or other early car. Always in the canyons, and pretty much all sports cars/bikes there including a thumbs up or down for road/police problems ahead.

I rarely wave at people all that much from my car. The jackstands kinda ruin the cool factor.

VW guys recognize more often

dc area lots of VERY pricey newer P cars and nobody pays much attention to anyone/thing other than themselves except.....
for older porsches. anything prior to 1980 i get a wave nearly 100% of the time......
*rarely*, i voted ...
mostly from older 911s or 912s ...
seems like anybody who drives a post '90 porsche has never seen a 914 before.
they probably think i'm driving a fiat ...
Andy
i get more waves from people driving '90 and newer porsches. usually boxsters.
is the only wave I get from other porsche owners after I've passed them . Except the local 914 guys. But they usually ring me up and call me ugly instead of waving
Yeah, if you count more than 50% as often. I find that the newer cars, driven by the open shirt and gold chain set are the ones that don't wave often. The other 914 drivers practically drive into your lane, waving with both hands and blowing the horn.
I get waves from chicks and hot rod guys more than Porsche owners...
This is driving any of the three P-cars....
I vote never.
Hay i thought this ment they thought we were #1. I am disillusioned!!!! Dave
I got a thumbs up from a CayenneS...
Then he got on the gas and left... bastard
Dont get the wave from most newer P-cars, maybe 50% of the pre 80's stuff though

Yep, those Boxter drivers real crave the attention! |
I didn't cross a 914 for the past 20 years ...
The car is so rare in France. When I pass someone he looks at the car with eyes wide opened ... could be a Fiat
Finaly he understands when he see this in front of him

Silly CONE Valley is Full of Porsches..... but most these days are the liquid cooled and driven by the nuvo_equity_line_of_credit_"riche"....
very rare to see the wave. very common to see them driven like the former ricers they are (i.e. wicked lane changes in tight traffic, cutting people off, basically no class)
Where I live it is several hundred miles to the nearest dealer. That means anyone around here with a Porsche had to go out of their way to get one, so most are enthusiasts. We give each other the headlight flash or a wave. 912s, 911s, 914s, and all the waterpumpers (yes 924s too). We even extend this to Ghias and well cared for beetles too. They are usually surprised and you get a big smile from them.
The exception to this is the local Boxster owners who seem clueless. A few are enthusiasts, but most seem to be "look at me" people.
I marked "often" meaning that if I see another Porsche there is a good chance I'll get the flash or wave. However, I often go weeks without seeing another Porsche.

When you saw another Porsche, which was rare, you would flash your headlights. |
Now I have a bit more experience ... I crossed a few Porsche in the past weeks.
So the french experience is:
Got wave or flash from almost all 911 owners ... cool
Never got any flash or wave from Boxters ...
I get the wave from pedestrians. I also got a wave from an enthusiastic 356 owner.
Otherwise, I rarely get a wave. But I'm not on the road a heck of a lot.
I am a big proponent of the wave. I drive a jeep everyday and thats the original wave mobile.
In our Honda Element, we even get the wave sometimes.
In the 914...I get and give waves from most old cars and 50/50 on other porsches.
I try not to be shy about spreading the love!
I passed a 996 twin turbo the other day. He glanced over, then looked away. Pretty sure he didn't have any idea what kind of car I was driving. For some strange reason I wanted to give him the finger, but I just grinned and gunned the engine as I passed him.
P cars are few and far between around here, and I'm not sure if any of them have ever waved at me.
I voted way back when, but since aquiring the zambeziteen, I thought I'd add this.
I almost never get it from P-car drivers unless they're older Porsches (as others have stated).
But every time I pass a ghia I get and give a wave. Buses 50%, bugs rarely, but ghias? Every time.
Almost never get a wave, but I got one from a Cayman S the other day after he chased me down on the highway......
I have to agree with the comments about the new car owners either being too self-absorbed, busy on their cell phones, or absolutely clueless that 914s ever existed.
I get the wave from older 911s and if and when I see a 914.
I gave up waving at newer Porsches, since they would not return it. They probably think I am a stalker or sleeping with their wife or.....
I've realized that i no longer get the wave now that my car is on jackstands
actually, i posted a get together over on pelican last week, in the 911 forum. it was really interesting to see how many reponses i received from people who wanted to show up, but couldn't. 911 guys aren't that bad, evn though they drive "girl" cars. (the 911 in the movie "cars" is a girl )
It was also kind of nice to see 914's receive an open invitaion to the Porsche Big Bear Run in California. I wonder if we will have more 914's show up, than 911's.
I've only had someone wave to me a few times here, possibly due to people not knowing what I drive. T
he best wave was from a good looking brunette in her Mercedies. I had my son with me at the time, he was 14, and he thought that was the coolest thing ever. Kind of wish he wasn't along for the ride
I live in NY. You wave we open fire.
Naw we are kinda lame and all got sticks up our butts. I do get the ricer glare alot. I do get waves and talk alot to truckers when in traffic but I am odd like that.
Already been done.... Save the Flash
http://www.pca.org/mst/flash.htm
I get waved at by all the classic rodders. They know it doesn't sound like a ricer.
The last time I took the car out, a deputy Sherriff pulled me over just to see the car. Sombitch skeert the shit out of me with the "Please pull over to the right". My car sets so low I can only see the bumpers of cars in the rear view. His was no exception. I thought someone was pulling a gag on me.....
I get waves about 90% of the time from everybody except boxster ( non -S ) owners. The S owners are about 50/50. Hot rods and Ghia's are at 100% and some may chase you down to chat. I passed a boxster and a 911 last time I was out driving. the boxter guy glared and the 911 found the long skinny one to hang with me ( and eventually leave my 90Hp ass on a long straight). boxster guy needs to either find the skinny pedal or smile and wave.
Doesn't seem like I see very many other Porsches during my commute. One Boxster I see waves most every time we pass. Most other waves are from older Porsches, but are far between. Generally Boxsters and other new P-car drivers don't seem to know what I am.
I waved a guy in a boxster next to me at the light a few days ago and he acted like his shit didn't stink.
No sooner do I complain about the new Porsche guys than does a guy in a 993 make it a point to get next to me in traffic today just so he could give me a thumbs up. Very cool.
914 recognition by other Porsches.....the newer,..the fewer! In their defense, however, they probably didn't see me as they were too busy dialing up and looking cool.
Pacific Coast Highway, Newport Beach. Big black Caddy SUV. "Hey what year is that?" "73". "Looks great!" Made my day.
Cheers, Elliot
I get the wave often, like most said from the older 911's and i even got a couple of waves from the suburu guys
also, i dont know if this counts as a wave, but i was at a burger joint, and when i walked back to my car there was a note under the windshield that read
"Nice car, call me...###-#### -Madylen"
I've been clearly aware of an increase in recognition for the 914. I've beeen going to a buncha PCA events and those guys all seem to have had/ still have/ wish they had a 914. It is getting pretty rare to see a good one and althoughsome folks don't recognize 'em, seems almost all Pcar owners around here like mine at least.
LOOOK MOMMY POST 911!!!!
The past two days I've driven my 914. First day I got the peace sign from a 944 turbo. Today I got a thumbs up from a Suby WRX STI and a guy drove his BMW Z4 accross a large parking lot at my work to say nice car while I was leaving for the day. It makes me smile !!!
Was driving the orange 914 this morning....last chance as it gets picked up for the move to SF tonight. Gotta a wave from a MILF in a ragtop SC....
No, I do not get "the wave". I get the stare sometimes though.
Some young kids on bicycles said "look at that little car" the other day.
I had a Boxteress pull up beside me on the highway last night, coming home from work, top off. Older dood, gave me the nod and smile and then shot ahead (I was doing 75 in the right lane). Then on the way in this morning I had a 944 turbo pull up beside me and give me the wave. Those were my first "Porsche Waves". I gotta say it felt pretty good. In between I was stopped at a light next to a guy in a Carrera, he was talking to his female passenger and didn't even notice as I rolled up next to him.
got a random wave from 928 today
I think from now on I'll only wave at 914's...and I'll start on, hummmm, I think I'll start on July 7th. I think that would be a good day to start
Need a poll option for:
My car is too jack standed to get waves.
Zach
Forgot to mention that last week a new, silver 911 gave me a headlight flash as we crossed paths while I was driving my 914. Since my fogs keep burning out (but fuse still intact?) I flashed him the peace sign.
Damn...guess I'm gonna have to be nice to some of 'em!
I noticed a super nice red taildragger in Bothell a few days ago. Then he flashes his fogs, then waves big as we pass. I flipped him off. Just kidding, waved back with a smile and nod. Very cool! I'm used to them ignoring the 914.
...took a long ride with wife this past weekend...about 2 hours all around my county. No 914's out there with me (not surprised), but got plenty of waves and beeps from all other Porsches.
One 928 slowed and with shock on his face gave me a "WOW" and a wave....my wife was really getting a kick outta all the fuss...
I think I have about a 25% wave-back in my area. Many new(er) Boxters around, and those people, for the most part, have the awareness of the stereotypical SUV-driving soccer mom. Other P-cars are usually better. I've even gotten waves from Vipers on occasion, and then the hot-rodders too.
Not too many teeners running in this area....
What are the "rules"on waves, anyhow? I can wave at old aircooled Porsches and count on a wave back. But aircooled VWs--only maybe. And anything like a 944 or Boxster--forget it. I wave at old MGBs and such because I like all old sports cars--no dice. I don't even bother anymore with old Mustangs and muscle cars--they're in their own world. Then there's the random waves I get from Blazers, Harley riders, and dudes on bicycles, even. Are they waving because they "get it" or because they just notice something unusual?
Guys definitely notice my teener more than chicks. Not to stereotype, but female drivers seem to be off in another world.
Some people actually give me dirty looks. I figure they're just jealous.
The most special thing, tho, is when I drive past some little kid about 8 years old, and even tho he's too young to know my car, I can just tell from his reaction that he sees my 914 and knows there's something special about it.
Got my first offical wave yesterday heading up to the mountains... Prior to that I have been snubbed... ......The boy (my son) said whos that? I don't know I replied just a guy out for a nice drive..
I have found that I get about 50% waves, whether I am driving the Jeep, the Vette, the Pickup, or the 914. I try to make it a habit to wave at vehicles that I know the driver is enjoying. Example: going north on Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay (California) topped the hill crest and here was coming toward me ten Austin Healeys'; gave them a "HIGH fIVE" and all of the drivers returned it with huge smiles; they feel good and makes me feel good. The rest of the 50% - they will never realize what they have missed!!!!

On my lunch break today...
While parked by the lake, saw a *pristine* '72 Datsun 240z and had a nice long enjoyable chat with the owner about cars. He has quite the stable.
Driving back to work, noticed a nice Acura NSX in my rearview. I pull into a left turn lane and look over my right shoulder to admire, and as I was raising a thumbs up, he was already waving at me.
When people recognize each other as car enthusiasts by glancing at the car, and have an immediate appreciation regardless of the model, THAT's cool.
Used to be only waved at in the Vanagon by other Vanagons. Then Peace sign from teenagers, -- If they're cute I give it back with my tongue in between LOL--
While driving my old Mars Red 80 GTI 16V, other VW guys would break their necks to look, lots of thumbs up.
Driving mom's 87 928 S4, lots of cranked heads, no waves.
Driving dad's 01 BOX-S -- top down, verbal "nice car" from any youngun you pass on a friday night.
BUT P cars? Most of the new ones are first timers. Leasers. No wave. Unless it's some older dude that's been raped by Porsche before, those guys will lift a finger off the wheel to acknowledge the teener. Somehow there is some bond between us victims of lost wages. Yeah it's expensive, don't touch it. No you can't go for a drive. Best waves though were in my 72 1.7, most guys were waving good-bye, it was so slow, but there were two young blondes that pulled up next to me at a light and asked " Excuse me, what kind of car is that?" Obviously they couldn't read the script anywhere on the car, and after I replied " It's a Porsche!", She said " No It's not." --- Probably why I hooked up with a redhead. Cheers.
yesterday and last night i got a wave from a suzuki 1000, another 914 (who now may join this club), a chevy truck and a buick somethingorother. i had to race the suzuki and won... whoops, did i say that?
I'll never forget pulling into town from picking up the 914 when I saw a young boy looking with eyes and mouth wide open as his mom sped along. I also made a WV bug roadster for my friend and the attention he gets is almost overwhelming. It will be the same here for 914s in Tappahannock since its a rural type community and Mustang/SUV contaminated.
In hot weather, always keep cold beverages handy.
Most WRX owners wave to one another.
^^^ Seen that..
Got the wave by a yellow new boxster... Old guy.
I waved back, and stepped on it in 4th... Then he really gave me the wave! lol
