914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Finally out of the Box

Posted by: bernbomb914 Sep 3 2003, 11:00 PM

I purchased a 2.0 engine about 10 mounths ago in a nice wooden Box. It was complete with FI etc. Anyway I finally took it out of its box today because my 1.8 dropped a valve seat. So now I have to rebuild the 2.0. Is there a list of the parts needed to make a 2270 cc engine. What stroke, bore, cam, etc should I use and what is the best source to aquire all the all the information and parts that I will be needing. Tom P has been to the fires can he provide a list that he would recommend.

Posted by: bernbomb914 Sep 3 2003, 11:31 PM

You might want to do what I did and order the book "Performance Engines" from http://www.hotvws.com/Specialtybooks.html (phone: 714-693-1866). Reverie says there's a chapter in the book about building high-performance Type IV motors.

Use that engine for a core and get a complete kit from aircooledtechnology. You'll spend less money and have a better combination of parts to make more POWER! With the kit, you still get the pleasure of building the engine yourself. It always hurts to put out a big lump sum like that, but it'll make a better engine in the long run and well worth the money.

I added up how much the parts alone would cost, and you don't save enough to buy from anyone but Jake... his kits are the way I plan to go!

What does your list look like? Here are some parts prices I've found to build a 2258 cc motor:

One pc chromoly 78 mm billet crankshaft $ 1499.00

Rebuilt factory 2.0 rods $219.00

96 mm piston & cylinder set is $ 450.00 set

Type 4 billet camshafts are $ 90.55

Cam gear $ 25.60

Type 4 perf lifters $ 79.00 set

Hd 30 mm oil pump $ 29.95

Chromoly cut to length pushrods $ 42.22 set

I still need a case and heads, machining, induction and exhaust, cooling tin.

Hi,
Got Carbs? You'll need them. I don't know that Jake is still doing kits. If he is, core the 1.8, sell the 2.0 and defray your costs. I am close or over the cost of a RAT motor in my 2270. And it's taken two years to get it together.

I bought a set of 40mm webers and manifolds from brad at Dunkels this year. Is it worth it to make a 2270 or should I leave it stock? I am not going to compete with it but would like to improve its performance over the 1.8. Iwould like to take it on long runs with out haveing second thoughts. The car has been rebuilt from the front to the rear and only needs the engine rebuild.

I think the cheapest way to go for a bit extra power is the 2056. You find a 2L core engine and then rebuild it with 96mm P&Cs. With good head work it should make 115hp which is a decent bump over a stock 1.8.

BTW, Raby still has kits listed under the Type 4 section.

Posted by: tat2dphreak Sep 4 2003, 01:19 PM

Raby still sells kits, I asked about one not long ago... about 4500 was his quote... which is a good deal, I priced all the parts from aircooled.net and was at about 3200 before head work... you can bet on near 1000 for the heads(if you have 1.8 heads, you need the valves up-sized)

also, to go to 2270, you need 44 carbs at minimum(I was told by Jake) so that's an extra cost too...

also plan on a good exhaust... he recommends the tangerine header...

Posted by: anthony Sep 4 2003, 03:18 PM

Does the $4500 include the headwork if you provide the core heads? By the time you add carbs, distributor, etc. you might as well pay Jake the full amount to do it for you.

Posted by: tat2dphreak Sep 4 2003, 03:21 PM

I'm not sure, but I think it does include the head work.. that's why I am thinking it's the best deal...

Posted by: tat2dphreak Sep 4 2003, 03:32 PM

a friend just sent me this... anyone ever hear of them? looks like a good deal if you want a stock size engine... but I dunno about quality... never heard of them.

If you go to http://www.aircooled.net/index.php and price the parts to build a 96 mm x 78 mm motor, you'll find that Jake's kit does seem to be competetively priced. But, the site also has a lot of really useful information about the different Type IV parts and what exactly can be used to build your motor.

Posted by: Jake Raby Sep 4 2003, 05:22 PM

4500 or about that for a complete kit....or 6500.00 for a turnkey providing your core.

The heads are 1500.00 of that cost alone.

I have the 2270 configuration down to the wire, I never build one these days that doesn't make atleast 145BHP on the dyno...

The kit is basically the parts we would use to build a 2270C version....Most guys buy a kit only if they want to do assembly themselves. Everything comes balanced and indexed, just before we would normally assemble the engine we box it up. Everything is mock up assembled in a cas ehere. the other advantage to my kit is that I have 450+ dyno plots from 2270 engines in almost every stage of tune, and cabn make a recommendation for your carbs and ignition that will be as close to having the engine on a dyno as you can get. I never worried about the price when I did my kit section up......just my configuration is worth the difference along with balance service thatcannot be paralleled.

Jake, you da man!

parts alone would add up(from what I think I know) ame to over 3k before heads!

and the headwork you trust, and your experience is worth more than the pile of parts to me!!! I have followed your work closely on shoptalk and pelican since I got my 914...

I really hope my new wife doesn't veto all future plans to get one of your kits(I want to do the assembly, but would prefer to have someone elses brain pick out the parts)

disbelievers look at the "customers engines" section of Jake's Page!

Hey, if the wife vetos what you want...just get rid of her........ I'll make you enough HP that you won't need her anymore...LOL

My customers engines page neds updating along with my whole site- not enough days in a month!!!!

Posted by: bernbomb914 Sep 4 2003, 10:31 PM

Thanks Jake for the input, can you email a list of what is in your kit for the 2270?

WOW, that's a whole different kind of engine! smile.gif I've heard of motors that can replace a man, but replace a woman!? blink.gif

she won't ever do a complete veto, but she may slow things... instead of next spring it may be the one after that... or the one after that... I'm patient though...
