gross
wtf is with that "clever disguise" thing?
ug....next!
b
THAT's Nice I'd give not only the right nut but the left one too and that engine cover... how cool is that???
Spiffy Man............ Spiffy
........b
you GOTTA give him kudos for how clever he is... the mid engine monster with "gentlemen's luggage"...
yes, he does get design kudos.....but that chevy's blaring in his ears all the time.....
but he does have a point, 911 back seats are *USELESS*
b
Wow!!
Would love to show up at a PCA event with that.
That is some amazing work. I remember seeing a 911 coupe like that about 20 years ago in a magazine. I suspect the buy it now price is way less than it cost to build.
Bob
i guess a former-sporto car?
b
I'm trying to find a picture of the transaxle alone. Or the caddillac/oldsmobile drivetrain...the obvious question is "will it fit into a 914"....
If you can add limited slip to that transaxle, maybe having an automatic wouldn't be too ridiculous... ...sounds like you CAN'T break it...
one of those constant variable tranny's would be nice too...
caddy's were the first one to do it i believe...had some rediculous cone thing on the engine with a huge belt....
b
Here ya go Brian...

The valve covers are nice.
Wow.. what a convoluted drivetrain.. What the heck do you call that? Mid-rear engined?
I like the console.. anyone know what it is?

I've read the FWD Olds/Caddy transmission alone weighs in around 300+lbs!!!
It's unbreakable - like a boat anchor
Can you say DYNAFLOW??? ( )
My Grampa had an early 50's Buick with a dynaflow tranny. Floor the sucker, engine revs to what sounds like rde line, slooowly creep up to speed. Think that was their first attempt at good gas mileage ...........
in reverse ????????
I gotta give the guy props.... lots of engineering went into that monster... I can't help but wonder if you put on a set of really sticky tires, if it would just wheelie-flip it self over backwards--LOL
That car CAN'T handle well.... a cast-iron Caddy big-block mounted in the rear of a 911??
Can you imagine the understeer?
I scanned through it..... but I don't remember reading anything about beefing up the brakes to compensate for all that extra weight??
Nevertheless...... very cool.....
Go fast...... don't turn

WTF Britt? Your first comment about it is trash and then when others step up and like it, you change your mind? I am going to contact this guy and go take a look at it. I have a chance to pick up an old 911 for cheap and this could be an interesting conversion. The 911 I am looking at has no engine or trans so it would be perfect. |

no I still dont like it. I dont think its smart to have the engine sticking into the cockpit of the car, but the guy gets some points for creativity. just so we're clear, I would only take it if it were like 500 bucks or something. b |
All you can say is WOW!
That's a whole lot of engine!
It's a..."Caddy Under Glass".
I want it for this years PCA concours event.
DH
All the SoCal 914 people that attend events for the last 2-3 years have been watching a little VW pickup show up with this same setup it (Dad Roberts)
Dad got the idea from the 911 story ran in Hot Rod or Car Craft back in the late 60's early 70's.
He drives it everywhere. He used the Olds Tornado setup.

I'd venture a guess that the weight DISTRIBUTION would actually be not bad...
Taking the center of mass of the engine/transaxle forward quite a bit has GOT to move the CARS center of mass forward with it.
This thing (although very heavy) may actually have pretty NEUTRAL handling....

Brad, got any picks of dad's creation??
I don't care how you shape it... mechanical creativity is always fun to look at.. and you always learn something to boot..
that just may be the definition of 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag! And I am with Britt on that engine cover Carpet to match the rest of the interior would have been just fine. It is interesting, but I think more in that 'serial killer is interesting to a psychologist' sort of way.
Is the p/up Brad mentioned the blue one with scallops and the engine sticking up in the back that was at Joe's BBQ? If so, that one is pretty damn cool!

At least someone finally figured out 911's have the engine in the wrong place...
I couldn't cut up a 911 like that!Sorry-

Actually the Caddy weighs less than a small block chevy. |
QUOTE (byndbad914 @ Mar 14 2006, 07:27 PM) | ||
I can't even begin to see how that is possible. Maybe v. a Big Block Chevy but no way v. Small Block. What do you think the 500 c.i. Caddy engine weighs?? Just gut feel, a SBC cranks is roughly 45-50lbs, Big Block anything is most likely over 70lbs, rods are longer in a BB than SB so weigh more, pistons are larger in diameter so weigh more, typically the wrist pins are larger in diam, the block has to be much larger to accomodate the bore spacing... on and on. |
sorry, no hatin' intended if it was taken that way. Just wondering what the Caddy weighed since I can't imagine how it is lighter and I couldn't find a weight for the engine on Google.
