the gasket on the drivers side is leaking how much on a PITA is it really to fix?

Posted by: Mueller Mar 17 2006, 12:07 PM

it's 4 bolts...should take about 15 minutes......

Posted by: sk8kat1 Mar 17 2006, 12:45 PM

does it piss fluid all over .. so I should do it when I have drained the trans to do a fluid change?

Posted by: Headrage Mar 17 2006, 12:50 PM

If you're talking about the actual paper cv gasket no. The cv is packed with heavy grease.

the gasket I am speaking of .. from the exploded view in the haynes manual it appears to be the one that is between the trans and the cv .. basicly it is leaking fluid down the side of the trans right wher the CV bolts to the trans

I'm kind of confused. There is no fluid where the cv bolts to the drive flange. Only cv grease. It sounds like you are talking about the tranny seal for the drive flange. If that's the case you'll have to pull the flange and r&r the seal. Not that big of a deal.

oh yea it is definately a drip .. but very small... does this other gaskeyt need to be done with the fluid drained and how long does that one take ..

Remove CV axle from out put flange, you will then see a bolt in the center of the flange (it may be hidden by a bunch of grease). Lock your parking break (stops other side from turning) and remove that bolt. Pulll flange, remove old seal, replace new seal, assemble and enjoy.

make sure you use a 12-point-star allen socket to remove the bolts, a standard 6 point might/will, BTDT dry.gif , strip the bolts.
