914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Gear Swap in 914 Tranny

Posted by: EPK Jun 5 2006, 05:42 PM

Hi ,I have searched every where for the article that describes the method for swapping the 3rd and 5th gears in the 914 to make it a closer ratio gearbox. Can you help out if you know where the article is.
Thx Ernie

had help with mine...

its as simple as taking a fifth gear... and putting it in place of third... (aslo flipping the ratio....)

an S or a Q gear makes for a great 4th to shorten the gap from 3rd to 4th

I second what Aaron said. I ran a flipped 5th with a "Q" gear in 4th and the "V" 4th moved to 5th. The 901 really was nice. It's slightly shorter than a "M-S-X" box. Works very well for a dual duty car in AX and DE's.

Its "OK" for AX but I found it too close to 2nd gear. If you are going to do it look for another 3rd gear thats alittle taller and put in a 4th gear too.

I used the ones out of a 912 5 speed and they work nicely for AX or track and are fun on the street.

For an article on disassembling and reassembling the transmission, see here:
http://home.san.rr.com/pb914/

If you're looking for discussions on how good or bad it is to change the gear ratios around, see the earlier posts in this thread.

For what all the letters and such mean, see here:
http://members.rennlist.com/chuxter/901&915ratios.htm

Note that, when they talk about "flipping" the gear, they are inverting the ratio--so (for example) 36:27 becomes 27:36.
