Surprisingly solid for being 50 years old.....was advertised as a 59 but the VIN and engine show a 58 model that was sold in 59....build date in 57.

Time to break out the
Fix it up tastefully,
Bag that sticker on the dash for sure dude.
One of the best 356 rust repair guys anywhere is in Piru, just in case you wanna do it right ........................ The Cap'n
Silver
Red Interior
Mesh Headlight Covers
Mobil Pegasus' on each front fender.
Resist all urges to put a wing and 22" wheels on it.
Looks like a fun project
U R NUTZ!
Ya really needed a little something else to do with your spare time?
nice project,
I would have left the vinyl roof, just to piss off everyone.
The radio has alot of value.
I know where to get you a new horn ring.
The rest of the parts you need are on the registry.
Looks like a nice little car, much better floors than mine...lol mine has none.
The fenders are a really piss poor design where the water/sand gets wedged in there...they all rot there...
good luck, if you need anything, let me know..
Rich
If I want to run Fuchs, I'm gonna have to do a bit of a flare on the rear...or maybe run the Mahles....I like idea of silver and the red leather interior.
Wow Mike, That does look like a pretty solid tub. Gonna look good...
Sweet, dude. I love 356 gauges.
Damn... I can't believe I let a 1956 get away a few years ago. Could have had it for a song, but I didn't know crap about 356s or their value.
What's the plan for it?
Drop the Fuch and Mahles... get custom made steelies with the proper offset. You don't want to flare that.
mike... outlaw dude.
no bumpers....mesh light covers, silver, widened to 7" wide 5 steelies.... rally lights... and a stinger
That looks pretty solid. Floor pan and longs. How is the front end? Mike how long did it take to find one in this condition? By the way did you get the paypal for the side stripes I thought I ordered them.
Buck
i have some lightweight fiberglass A bumpers if you want blades.
restoration design is making metal ones now according to their website too.
I know a place that will make carrera alu/steel wheels for it as well.
I'm so jealous. I don't think I would like driving a 356, but I sure as hell want one. SEXY!
cool, now drop a cheby v-8 in it and make it go like stink....
or a subaru....
For once, I say stock resto with a "little" flavor... Then sell the stupid thing!
Well battery is in, it turns over but it needs a cap and rotor...local wrench has one in stock....all the lights work, windshield wipers etc......might need a fuel pump kit. Master cylinder on order....hope to see it turn and fire tonight.....
Yet another re-birth!!!
Anyway, enough bitching. Congratulations on the coupe. You got it for a helluva deal. If you not a member yet I would suggest joining the 356 registry. They have a talk digest daily. Very archaic but full of good information. I wish they would go to a forum like this site, the samba.com or hoodride.
Whats you VIN? Mine's 102797.
best of luck,
Mark
VIN is 103992, original engine and trans. The radio is definitely an old VW relic....I stared at one like it in my 56 and my momz 63 for many years.
The engine spins and I have spark at the coil but it's not translating to the plugs....new cap and rotor....but it's a two man job on some of this stuff and I'm waiting on some help to come over this morning.
As to the Registry, yeah I'm a paying member.....they barely put up with me since I have a replica...that has gasp....fuel injection and a hair dryer (turbo). They are a funny list. I think the youngest person there is like 35.....
This is the 914world website! I am not interested in all of this 356 talk! Purely out of jealousy on my part!
Good Day!!
Yeah I agree....are you on the 356 talk list? They keep a pretty tight leash on the eccentrics. That one guy that has the Convertible "D"? MiamiAir.....that guy makes Miles seem normal.....
Mike... seriously... what are you plans... going completley stock?
With the price those damn things command I'm not sure I could do anything but bone stock.
I'm seeing paint as the BIG $$, followed by interior work. I want red leather with black trim and then I'm thinking off having the upholstery guy use the old carpet as templates as the repro/replacement stuff is WAY spendy. Black carpet with red trim....
Wheels, chromed and 15x5.5 are available for 69 each.....the oem 1958 dated ones should bring me some bucks....I have a set of five.
The handles and widow trim...pitted and flaking, I'm thinking of anodizing or powder coating black....leaving off ALL other trim pieces, like on the hood and under the doors and filling the holes.
Cool find, Z. Here's one for inspiration - You could even do do replica decals to show the world your Guatemala-ness! Bonus points if you can name the movie that phrase came from.
Here's my fake that makes the "purists" piddle in their Depends....
Thanks for remembering the title - I remembered the line but not the movie.
Back to the color - Like someone else mentioned - silver is really common for the 356 and replicas. How about finding a really obscure '58 color? What was the original color? What's the color under the hood - looks like baby-poop yellow????
Original color is .......
Silver.....
damnit i miss that fucker... why do you have to keep showin pictures of it lately. and what'd ya do let the lid fly off when you were cruisin the coastal? or are you showin off the turbo setup to everybody!
i dig the new one... outlaw - all the way.
Dude....I'm here to help.....
What kinda wheels are those?
they look like panasports...minilights.
But its got five bolt disks on it...from a C
The drum brakes really are a nice setup.
If you go disks, look at using beetle setup, the new stuff.
It will bolt up on the rear, but the front is a bit different.
At some point the 356 and the beetle have a different spacing in between the tubes on the front beam.
I think its late b/c but Im not sure.
Measure center to center on the front beam of both a beetle and your car. If they are the same, you should be able to use the dropped spindles from anyone and they should fit.
You dont need dropped spindles, cause it will adjust, but the offset of the steering linkage makes it worth doing, plus all the bearings come with those kits...the disks and calipers are ghia or type 3...so simple to get.
Rich
Looks like a fun project. Nice score!
Will you keep this one or sell it?
I'd keep this one.
KT
Nice car Mike...
C
Here's a pic of a different color choice. TurquoiseGreen. One year only(2000) BMW Z3 color choice. Looks period correct on my 356. Their are tons of great colors that will stand apart from the silver crowd. It is your car though so...
Here's another uncommon color...But this is an OG color
or this uncommon OG color
nice car mike, i was hoping that guy would go to a good owner. i want to see how this one folds out
Pretty colors both....but I'm so far from paint right now that I'm considering everything.....yellow and red are out though....
As to what I'm gonna do with it? Well originally my brother wanted it.....but it looks like he's gonna flake. I've actaully had some offers for it as-is, running as-is and finished......don't know yet.....
in hindsight, i wish i had sold the 914s along with every bit of related trash cluttering up the storage and bought the red car jim chambers had at camp914. 20/20.
k
And I wish I had kept it!
Attached image(s)
ouch!!! so complete. the interior was supr nice. ask craig. i uncovered it twice. causally mentioned it to jeanne while she was looking at an Excellence with one pictured. she was all about it. your car was sold. i love the *notch* styling.
k
Hijack: The best part of the story of that car was the incredible luck I had in buying it. Got it on Ebay with a winning bid of $10,101. It was consigned to a dealer by the owner. It was in upstate NY and could have been very rusty. Guy assured me on the phone that it was solid. Arrived on the truck and to my amazement, no rust apparent anywhere! Cost $1800 to ship to Oregon. Sold it for $12,500 after deciding I didn't have the energy to do the resto. Should have.
It is now somewhere in So. CA.
This one is a contender.....
Something along these lines would be nice

What are ya tryin to conform now
great find mike, i like those uncommon blues from the B period....man i know of two good ones right now but the money they take to restore is just too much.
Well....cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires.....She's running....smokes when hot due to oil in the muffler but it's dissipating. No oil dripping.....
Waiting on the new dual circuit master cylinder from Zims and then I'll blow out the lines and add fluid.....hopefully the wheel cylinders will hold.......
you already know, one is in your barn
and the other????????????
I figured one I knew...the other one ...is that up near pop?
Rich
Thanks....I forgot how much fun a pushrod flat four motor is....I sit there and rev it while it burns off the accumulated oil in the muffler.....
Pushed in the clutch....grind in each gear....crap, looks like a cable adjustment...I hope. Sprayed some PB blaster on the adjustment nuts....hopefully I can get it gear tomorrow with some minor adjustments....
KTF....
Z
BTW....
I'm probably going to get NLA's 15x5.5 chromies.....what can I fit on them that won't rub on my T2 fender wells? 185-195/60s feasible?
185 would be the best size for that rim.
Cool....looks like 356 guy is interested in the 1958 date stamped wheels...like I care if they are dated......I can sell them, get some wider chromies and have $$ left over for tires.
I've been avoiding this thread for a reason. Specially after seeing all the outlaw cars. Should have never sold my 58 sunroof coupe...
good find Mike, I sure enjoyed my 64...
mikey you like outlaws here one for you.

The Outlaws are badass but I couldn't help but post this one.
null
little bit of bling.........
A litttle rust????
Then ya do the grinder and find this.....
Wet vac leaves lines.....I've been going around with a magnet and hitting the areas where it falls off with a heavy wire brush......
are 356 door gaps done by leading?
Leaded edges....That's the rumor....haven't started grinding on the doors as yet. The bottoms seem to be the worst.....the skin on the passenger side looks to be seperating from the door frame.
I contacted a 356 restoration friend and he says that the bottom five inches is a common replacement piece. So, gonna keep looking for cancer and grinding.....finally got all the brake parts and will start on that phase. Just need to get motivated.
if you take a look (and you will) at how that fender traps dirt/water, you will see why they ALL rust there.
To do it right.
The door stays on the car, do not remove, or re-hang it after you re-skin the bottom.
So, door is first.
Then you get the gap on the BOTTOM of the door correct by adjusting the hinges.
That is all you can do with the hinges.
From there, you weld in the front and rear sections of the fenders
(front fender rear, rear fender front)
and match the door gaps as best you can by cutting/grinding the replacement piece, again...with the door in place.
All the parts are available at RD, or Zims.
grind away on the fender right behind the door.
Same idea, dirt/water get in there.
There is alot of lead around the doors also...so wear a mask.
I will still buy it if you get frustrated.
Rich
I wanna at least get it on the road first....see how it drives. Then see what the paint is gonna cost me. That will be decision time.
oh my, i'm having flashbacks.
Some Italians came by to see the 58.....seems like they are on a buying tour. Says he's gonna make me an offer.....hopefully one I won't have to worry about refusing.....
booo
Mike,
From what I have heard, everything was junked back in the 70's and early 80's so they are shopping (the Italians) for project cars to ship back home.
Its where the market is for projects right now, and its where more than a few I have touched have gone.
