Nice find, looks to be a 2.0L (correct me if i'm wrong). How's the hell hole?

Looks nice James. Love the Rennshifter in there. That's worth what you paid for the car right there.

Correct. It's a '73 2.0L FI. The hell hole looks fine. Didnt take the batt out to look at it more cuz I got back to Oklahoma City around 8 pm n didnt have time to do a lot of pokin around cuz I still had to return the dolley and truck. Tomorrow morning I will hopefully have time to go through the car more thoroughly and organise all the parts n stuff that came with it. Also to look for where all the rusty areas r at.

Yeah my bad. The trapezoidal pieces that are spot-welded to them are the sway bar backing plates which are welded to the inside of the trunk.
Posted by: SirAndy Mar 31 2009, 10:02 PM
No. Those are the support brackets for the rear sway bar. Your car doesn't have a rear sway bar, so if you ever going to install one, you'd need those plates.
However, they're readily available new for cheap without the surface rust.

Thanks Andy. Would it be worth fixing up the ones I got or just buying new ones if I ever do put rear sway bars in?

Gotta be a good feeling! I remember bringing home the first 914 (when I was 19) ...It was great!!!
Congrats man! Looks like a lot of work, but that pays off in the end! Awesome deal for $500!

Eh, don't worry about the rear bar. You have a lot of work to do and a rear bar is far from something you need. Actually, you may never even want one

Hopefully the ones on your car are SSIs. Stainless heat exchangers are the desirable ones.

That whole gas cap assembly is attached with 8 small bolts with a gasket under it
The overflow tube attaches to the gas cap assembly and goes through a hole to the street under the gas tank just aft of the front suspension cover plate
The plastic piece goes under the strap that holds your gas tank in.
Under the overflow tube is one of the rubber blocks that hold the gas tank. They are molded to fit the fenderwell and the slot fits to the seam on the edge of the tank.
I dont see an expansoin tank or charcoal filter though. There is plumbing for it there....
Clear as mud? ![blink.gif](style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Sweet deal. Welcome to the madness.
That's the same shift knob I have on mine. I like it too!
Good luck on getting things back together and running. Take your time and do it right the first time. I would drop the engine and trans and do some in-depth cleaning and replace seals, gaskets, etc. Others here will have a better list of things to do before starting the engine up. For sure fuel line, hoses, points, plugs ,fuel filter.
Again welcome, and good luck on your new project.

I would certainly try to repair the fender (we would be able to do it) to preserve the unibody integrity and the originality of the car. Whenever a fender is cut off of a 914 they are just never the same again, as it is hard to execute a perfect undetectable job.

A year or so back we had a major controversy involving someone who thought Yeaman Auto Body should have done a better job of concealing the butt welded repair to their left front fender. The guy was pretty pissed as I recall that Yeaman had done this to his Dad's car. Yeaman is one of the best body shops for Porsche work around. They really know our cars.
We have become a society of remove and replace when it regards our cars. A skilled body man could repair that.

Yes, but... The existing has to be cut off not unbolted. The used replacement has to be fit and butt welded. What you have there could be repaired. As George has hinted, your body is your frame. When you cut out sections and weld in new, you do weaken your body/frame.

The add did say they put a 911 speedo in it so that's what I think it is.

They go inside the car. One in front of the center tunnel, one in the rear of the center tunnel and If that is indeed the e-brake cover it covers the e-brake mechanism so it does not get your fingers.

The brake caliper piece, if aluminium, goes to a 911 S caliper. Very expensive and great to have. Your car will not have these on there since you have four lug wheels but I believe people are eluding to hoping you find the calipers in there somewhere.

Just call me James. Well I want to get the engine running first. Need to hook up all the fuel lines. I will replace the usual stuff like spark plugs, gaskets, etc... I know I do want to rebuild it eventually. I have a friend who has an engine stand but he is currently using it for his Nissan 240 engine. I do want to restore the car and get rid of all the rust. AXing it is one of my future goals. I need to make a list...a big list...

So I figured something out today...that I love seeing my car everyday before and after work when ever I walk down or up the stairs to my room.

I can't wait to start working on it. Hopefully soon I will be able to.

Nice score. Looks like you have most of the parts you need.
If you want to change the front fender you don't have to section it like it was suggested. You can remove the old fender by drilling out the spot welds that you can get to then cut the bulk of it off before the seam on the door pillar. Now you can get to the rest of the spot welds along the door pillar. Once you get the rest of it off clean up the joints and install the other fender

Put a WTD: in the classifieds for some good used ones. I am sure you'll get a fair price.
I think I have 3 sets of them in a box here. You are welcome to them if you want them.
BTW... come to Talimena..... I will be glad to give you a personal tech session, and a ride in a running 914.
And hook up with all the locals in Tulsa. There are lots of them, and everyone is willing to help.
Awesome, thanks. I would like to have them. How much u want for them? I would like to come down sometime. That would be fun to ride in a 914 that runs. I can only sit in mine

I met A & P Girl who's in Tulsa about a month ago. She showed the 3 914's they have in storage. I would also like to meet them all. Where is Talimena in TX?
In your battery tray thread, I saw the mount point for the engine bar. It shows the proper mount in it already.
Someone may have thought they needed them even with the mounts already there.

No. Those are the support brackets for the rear sway bar. Your car doesn't have a rear sway bar, so if you ever going to install one, you'd need those plates.
However, they're readily available new for cheap without the surface rust.

Yeah - 74-76 style guages without the silver center buttns, but then his is a 7/73 build date, so they might have started the switch-over early - too bad! The left combo gauge seems non-std. because it's side-by-side - not over-n-under & lacks fuel guage & idiot lights.
Keep the front fender intact & have a good body shop bang'er out - if you're not sure about it &/or lack the tools (body wedges, etc.). I've got far more serios F&R damage on my 73-2L (you've seen my researching history post - pix coming whenever....?), and I'm seriously considering straightening the F&R ends up to maintain a more rigid uni-body.
At $500, I'd have used her for a donor, but you got the long term project to do now!
Good Luck!

Yeah & have it mounted in the front trunk like the 75-76's so you won't have the gas-bubbles in the fuel lines problem as much! It's no fun to sit for an hour waiting for it to cool down so she'll start, & it gets HOT in OKC too!
I did that ONCE in Blythe, CA (nee DESERT!), then had my mechanic refit my `73-2L up front - never a problem after thet ...except the 26 years in the garage since being hit, but that's a different story!

James: If you are going to move the fuel pump up front, there's three places most people put them. "Stock" is under the gas tank (by the swaybar). You need to cut an access panel to get to it if you put it there. The second is on the front cross member, by the steering rack. You'd need to put that skid plate back on if you do that. The third is in the front trunk, in the spare tire well (but that screws up your spare).
Personally, I'd run it as is, and not move it until (and if) you have trouble. Mine is in the back and I've never had trouble, and it gets a bit hot down here as well.

I would certainly try to repair the fender (we would be able to do it) to preserve the unibody integrity and the originality of the car. Whenever a fender is cut off of a 914 they are just never the same again, as it is hard to execute a perfect undetectable job.
Well I have a whole front left fender that came with the car. It's in good condition. Their is a pic of it in the thread. I think page 2.
Yes, but... The existing has to be cut off not unbolted. The used replacement has to be fit and butt welded. What you have there could be repaired. As George has hinted, your body is your frame. When you cut out sections and weld in new, you do weaken your body/frame.
Ah I c n understand now. How could it be fixed?
Like this!
![shades.gif](style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)
It's not a 914 but you get the idea
![smash.gif](style_emoticons/default/smash.gif)
Just take your time.
Hm...I c.
![idea.gif](style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)
A hammer and dolly and lot's of patience.
![smash.gif](style_emoticons/default/smash.gif)
When done a little body filler to smooth it out. I have done it both ways, I would much rather repair then weld on a replacement. The replacements just never look right.

I have a friend in OKC that I bought one of my cars from. He has a LOT of 914 parts and is a super nice guy. Let me know if you want me to make an intrduction. He lives in Edmond.
I would like that definitely. Tomorrow or Sunday I could meet him. All next week though I will be in Vegas at Nellis AFB doing my job for the Air Force. Quite excited. Heading to sin city!

No, I think he stays too busy. Poor guy lives down in a hole and finally just got high speed internet through satellite. Previous to that was dial up, not hardly worth it.

What I really need right now is the two fuel tunnel lines cuz one was broke before I bought the car and than I broke the other one taking it out of the freaking front trunk.

Does your friend live on an airstrip and have a hanger in his backyard?

So it's a beautiful day in Oklahoma City right now, about 70 dgrees or so and I have been out since 8am working on my teener.
Here is what I accomplished so far.
I replaced the tunnel lines-I went and got some fuel lines to run through em until I have the money to get the stainless steel ones from Tangerine Racing Products. I am hopeing to get those beginning of May.
I also put the drivers seat back in and also the seat belt clip.
I also dropped off my battery at AutoZone for them to do a slow charge on it and that should be done by tomorrow. Hopefully the battery is still usable. I'm worried that since the car has been sitting for a year n a half or so that the battery is shot. Hope not cuz that would suck
I am planning on finishing up all the connections for the fuel lines today. Have to connect the fuel tank, expansion tank, gas cap, charcoal filter, fuel pump, fuel filter, ect...
I also need to put the air cleaner back on.
So I am hoping that tomorrow I can start up the engine. Hopefully it will start up without a hitch and run well also.

Did you get line rated for FI fuel pressure? If not you may have made your car less safe. That might matter where your fuel pump is though..... Mine is relocated to the front trunk, so the tunnel line is pressurized to FI Pressure. If yours is in the engine bay, it might be fine. Not sure about that. Anything after the pump should be FI line I would think.

My bet is your battery is F'd.

My current 2.0 has djet. It sat for like 4 years before I bought it. I put a battery in it and it fired. It leaked fuel everywhere but it ran. Djet works good, when it works good.

My pump is in the engine bay so they should be fine. The lines say 50 psi on em so I'm positive they will be fine. Im pretty sure my batt is f'ed also but hopefully not. I hope it fires up good.

Update: My battery is f'ed so their goes trying to start the engine today.
Oh well. Going to be in Vegas tomorrow afternoon so their goes a full week of not working on the teener
So I need a new battery and I still need to figure out how I should start up my engine since it's been sitting for roughly 2 years. I need to figure out if their is anything special I need to do before trying to crank her up. As in prime her and if so how would I do that? Help please.
