Well, WCC is only 9 days away so I decided to paint the car. Got started late but I still managed to paint the rear of the car but not the rear deck. Wow the new HVLP gun works great!! I didn't have clouds of paint flying around as it just goes right onto the car. Two quick coats after sanding and sanding plus alittle primer here and there. Well actually there was a lot of primer on the rear of the car cuz of my stretching out the rear fenders a few years ago so 15x7's would fit. Tomorrow I will attack more of the car! The next day I finished the front end but still have to do the drivers door. Attached thumbnail(s)
Ok, I am back in Seattle for a short while including to go to WCC06. I did get to test drive the 93 911 Turbo in Suriname which was fun. Comparing my 914 to the 911 well, the 911 is like driving a Lexus all tame vs the 914 is so loud and full of road feel. I prefer the 914 as its more an extension of myself vs just driving a heavy fast car. Blair and I have the Black 72 running although it needs to still have some areas sorted out before really driving it full time. Got a set of rear Bilsteins to go on it, adjust the shifter some more, finish the interior, re-adjust the valves, install a Pretronix etc.... The little 1.7 sounds pretty good and revs up nicely! I worked on it on Fathers Day to fix a couple of things and then it fired right up. Love that Djet.
Well its been quite awhile since I could add to my blog but now I am in Suriname working. I have been here a month and enjoying the heck out of life. My Brother in Law got a 1998 Boxter (one of two here) so we blast around in that with the top down. Today, he told me he has a line on a 2002 Turbo 911 and wants to go street racing with it. Oh I should mention street racing happens just down the street from where I am staying. This Sunday a Skyline and a Turbo Honda were drag racing up and down Bonistraat for about a hour til the Skyline broke something. People living along the road come out and watch and party. Hell, even the Police showed up and watched and partied...life is different here! Blair says he has the motor completed and the interior almost back in, but he is chasing electrical problems before getting the car started. soon soon it will be running again. Attached thumbnail(s)
Blair finished up the hellhole but was having trouble fabbing up something for the passenger side rot spot. I made a cardboard template and then a metal piece. Then the fun began as I bent, pounded out, shaped and finally drilled 1/4" holes for the puddle welds. Fits good and Blair just has to weld in it.
The 1.7L is now setup to go into the car as I installed the endplay shims, flywheel, seal, PP and clutch. The thermostat went in also so the engine is ready to go! Although it needs a 4 pin TPS to finish up the FI. The aircleaner and elbow came in from Mueller too. We hooked up the LC1 and ran a bunch of test runs really nailing down the A/F mix on the MPS and now the car really has some power. Running thru the gears at WOT is a blast! Attached thumbnail(s)
The LM-1 meter showed up so Blair and I welded on a bung and proceeded to tune the 76 car with its 2056cc. My tune by the ear MPS was only off by alittle bit but the adjustments I made really helped to make the car run nice at cruise and WOT.
The idle is still fucking with me but I will work on it more when time allows. Note: With the 9550 cam and a 2056cc motor the MPS setting end up being the 037 MPS settings EXCEPT for the idle. The lower idle manifold vacuum of 12hg makes the ECU set the idle too rich even turning the knob max lean. I will play with setting up the idle for 12 instead of stock 15hg, maybe that will give me some leaway to adjust it. Its alot of fun to drive around logging in the A/F mix and rpms so you can see whats going on just like the big boys with the Megasquirt.. With the MPS setup right the engine really kicks ass with tons of power. The short gears are a blast to run thru at WOT on the freeway on ramps. Got to get this running right before I leave for two months so I have good memorys instead of nightmares about Djet.
Blair plugged away on the rust at the hellhole grinding and cleaning to see what has to be fixed. Its pretty good really and for now will be ok. Could use a engine shelf but later.
I worked on running fuel lines, hooking up the FI harness and PCV hoses and drinking beer. Hell it was 62 degrees and sunny in Seattle.
Ok, its been 2 months and alot has happened. I went to Suriname for almost 4 weeks at the end of January and Blair didn't work on his car due to a onsite job injury.
The good news is that I pulled the 2.0L engine out the other day and the hellhole looks pretty good. I cut out the BS DPO battery tray and started scraping the undercoating off. Blair will tackle alot of that work now himself. We started painting alot of the FI bits and he is going to order the final parts for final assemby. I torn apart part of the 2.0l and did a bit of checking and my feeling is that #1 intake valve has a dropped seat. The motor turns until TDC and the exhaust valve looks ok from the exhaust port. Still have to pop a valve cover or Blair will tear the top end down to verify the condition of the engine. Hopefully, the bottom end is good as the heads are pretty messed up from a bad mechanical shop installing new SSI HE's and the new flywheel, clutch and PP. These brand new parts along with the new unused starter made the purchase of the car a decent deal as thats a $1000 in new parts alone. The brakes are completely rebuilt and the tranny is a recent install, hopefully its in good condition. Maybe we'll pull it apart to see its condition. Attached thumbnail(s)
Blair has been making good progress on the 1.7l with some help from me and the parts stash for the Westy. Long block is together finally with the re-ring of the domed 90mm pistons, a tweaked Web73 cam from Jake plus new lifters, re used the good heads, new bearings, seals blahblah.....
Slowly taking the 2.0l out of the 72 black car but atleast it's up on jackstands
Blair got the parts from DaveHunt on Sunday so I went over the shop to tackle fixing the heat. Replaced the flappervalve and voila I have heat again!
I checked the 1.7l engine, trying to see what is sticking as it rotates. Damn, if I can figure what is going on. I installed the flywheel and I can force it past the spot but thats not good. Time to pull it apart I think for the 8th time.
Blair and I have broken down the two 1.7l motors I had laying around. One has a set of good domed 90m pistons which we will put on the other motor cuz its only got the whimpy dished 90mm bus pistons but it was recently rebuilt, good bearings, heads etc. Should be able to make a good runner by adding a Jake cam and bearings, new rings, resurfaced flywheel, and other goodies laying around. Need to drive down to Davehunts and get that 1.7l djet setup to complete the motor. | 0 user(s) viewing
