I guess it is way past time to update my blog. A LeMans seat, with corduroy inserts, is on order from GTS. New Bell 5pt harness's have recently been installed. Today I just got the 6" rear valance I bought from EASY, European Auto Salvage Yard in Emmeryville, CA. I was very pleased with their service and price on this hard to find item. I need to get a couple more cans of brake cleaner to get off all the grease and oil. Best of all - no rust! Then comes the fun part. I need to move the hole for the exhaust pipe 3 inches to the left.
Getting ready for the WCC.
Got the door handles working today. Also crafted some new leather door pulls. Covered the cage with new padding. Regular foam tubing on the lower bars and the high density stuff on the upper hoops. Man that stuff is pricey. Even did a 'Oh Shit Grab Handle' for the passenger. With only minor adjustment, the window cranks, door handles and even the targa top all do what they are supposed to do. Putting the roof back on is a real PITA. I guess it is not such a big deal that it won't fit in the trunk. Attached thumbnail(s)
Friday was a good day to get several small projects done on the teener. 1.) New attachment points were grafted on to the rear bumper skirt. It is finally back in place after sitting on a shelf for the past 2 months. 2.) The old dash pad was removed and a replacement was crafted. It's not perfect, but the best I could do short of pulling the entire dash. 3.) Plan A for the door handles worked twice and broke on the third try. On to plan B (what ever that will be). 4.) Old roll bar padding was removed. New will be in place before the track day next weekend. 5.) Last but not least - Elvira went topless for the 1st time in years. With the roll bar padding removed I was able to take off the targa top for the 1st time. It took a bit of coaxing. The rubber seals wanted to come off with the top. I reattached the rubber and went for a drive.
EDIT for update: I thought the targa top was a b*tch to get off. I was wrong. That was a piece of cake compared with putting it back on. On my previous race car with a similar cage the hard part was hooking the rear latches. On Elvira the front hoop of the cage is higher and further forward. It was a real exercise in patience and preseverence to figure out how to thread the front latches in and get the lip in place. Also, there is no way that I am going to be able to stow the top in the trunk. The wall was modified to make room for the FI components of the 3.0. I guess I will have to figure out some way to craft a targa top that can be folded or ????
