a Helicoil is simply a coil of (approximately) square-section wire designed to repair damaged threads in alloy or to add steel threads in alloy - many spark plug holes are HeliCoiled from the factory. a TimeSert is a steel sleeve. both are staked in place with a special (and non-interchangeable) installation tool. for completeness, another insert is the Case-Saver. like the TimeSert it is a solid sleve, but it features very coarse threads designed to provide maximal grip in weak alloy - such as a 911's magnesium case, famous for pulling studs... |
