Was the original paint a lacquer or an enamel? I think I asked this before but can't seem to find the answer now.

Neither, properly, but a lacquer based finish, yes.
I don't think enamels have been used on exterior automotive since around 1929. You painting your car? Orange? I would reccamens a one-stage paint, color thru, and watch the ... ORANGE PEEL M |

Actually, I am just thinking of getting some rattle cans from Tower Paint and they offer both kinds so I needed to know which to use. Thanks.

If it is factory paint on your car, it is most likely Lacquer. In California, you cant buy lacquer anymore legally. If you repaint your car, single stage is fine if you do a solid color but if you do a metallic, you should go at least a 2 stage.

I just placed an order with Tower. Nice folks.
They said that different years had different paint (lacquer vs Enamel). My 74 was lacquer but they said for engine compartments it was better to use enamel since they said it was more tolerent of heat, oils and grease than the lacquer. I'm doing my engine compartment so I ordered the enamel. Haven't gotten it or used it yet so I can't comment on it yet. --- bill |

most of those overspray-on liner in a can things are enamels, like on cast iron.. all the high-temp stuff is enamel..

So was that a vote for enamel or lacquer for color matched rattle cans
from Tower? I'm assuming (hoping) Tower didn't mislead me on the suggestion for enamel for the engine bay. (BTW: They did recommend the lacquer for everything else) --- bill |
