I've got the non-easy install 914Rubber brake master cylinder. From the installation videos I've seen, there should be small metal washers between the MC and the rubber grommets for the supply lines. Do these exist within my original MC to be re-used? The new one (bought a while ago before they offered the easy install version) didn't come with them.
Thanks. |

The washers that go under the lines will be present in your old mc and are fine to reuse. They are not crush washers like the ones on the side. They absolutely have to be there for your brakes to function properly and not leak.

You need them, and they are not the crush washers that go on the banjo fitting for the caliper supply lines. They came with my 914Rubber non-easy install MC and were in a small ziploc bag. Easy to lose, especially if you bought the part several years ago. Give 914Rubber a call and I'll bet they'll send you some more. I'm not a big fan of reusing easily replaceable parts, but that advice came from a more experienced member so I'm sure it's ok to reuse the old ones. Have fun getting the grommets in place. I lubed mine with a bit of brake fluid and that really helped. I used a pair of right angle pliers to push them down in place. That was the hardest part of the job... A Motiv pressure brake bleeder and three quarts of brake fluid were needed to get all the air out of the system. Have fun! |

those are stainless and very important to help seat the two supply lines.

Help me understand what you guys are referencing. I am installing a new master cylinder. I bought 4 of them several years ago for future projects. It has been several years since I changed out the master cylinder.
The one I am dry fitting in the 6 came with 2 washers. Are you guys saying you need to pull the rubber line sleeves, install these under them the rubber sleeves? These clearly will not fit to seal the banjo fitting. |

Yeah, the rubber grommets come out and the washers are placed underneath. The grommets are then fitted over the brake line and worked (with great difficulty and copious swearing) into the master cylinder. The washers should be seated inside the master so they don't move or drop out while you fight with the grommet/pipe. The purpose of the washers is not to seal anything but to keep upward pressure on the pipe flange contact with the grommet. Kind of illogical, but that's how I understand it.

My question is - did the MC come with the grommets pre-installed on yours? Mine did, so the natural assumption is that the washers would surely be installed under them. No need to install grommets that need to be taken back out again for other items to be installed. I got some slight weeping at those grommets during bleeding after I'd installed the MC, that eventually stopped. But now I'm wondering if the washers were even in place. I'm gonna watch for more weeping. Sure as hell don't want to have to R&R the MC again, it's a B!

I'm gonna watch for more weeping. Sure as hell don't want to have to R&R the MC again, it's a B! I've now replaced my MC twice in the past few months. The first one was defective and was leaking around the plug in the casting hole (at least I think that's what that hole is for) as that plug was not properly pressed in (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) . Neither time, either with the first MC or with the Ate MC that I bought to replace it, did the washers come pre-installed. On both MCs the rubber plugs were pre-installed. While I agree that these washers are intended to go in below the rubber plugs, they are clearly seen in the diagrams in the PET, and they come with the MC, I also know of several installations where they were omitted and there have not been any known resultant problems, such as leaks or early failure of the MC. Still, if it were my car I would absolutely want to know that they were in place and I would confirm that, even if it required I remove the rubber plugs to find out. I know how much it sucks to have to do that, but if you removed one and found the washer I think it would be a safe bet that the second one has it underneath it. |
