Tried the fan on and the back of the fan rubs on the carriage bolts I used to mount my sensor

Followed Geoff's suggestion to use Allen screws. Much cleaner and easier to work on. Fan turns freely now

Dang, Dave. This plan is coming together! Looks pretty straight forward, but I really don't want to pull my engine again. It's turning into a habit! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Ben don't rush into it. I still have a lot to do. As it stands now I could run wasted spark either as single or twin plug. The only thing I have to do for that is provide the advance with a Megasquirt board with a couple of changes and different firmware. Once I have the board and the components that will take me a weekend.
The tough part is trying to get rid of the wasted spark. I'm going to try to switch the positive side of the coils so that potential is available at the individual coil for 90 degrees with latched hall effect sensors and IGBT's in the distributor. The other problem has been find info on COP units. I found on reference that suggested the coil drivers in the Ford EDIS modules will dive the individual coils off of the 96-98 SHO's. But I can't get any info out of Ford. I really can't blame them. I'm sure I sound like some kind of nut. I even called Diamond Electronics since their web site says they have off the shelf solutions for your coil needs. I asked if they had a coil with .5ohm primary resistance and 6.2 mH inductance. The guy said no but they could design some. He said "How many you want?". I said "4". He said "You mean 400,000?" Well, you can see where that was leading. We both had a good laugh. Still plugging away Dave |

i forgot to ask. are you going to give the setup a try in your current engine when done? or save it for the monster?

It's going on the current engine for next summer. There's bound to be some bugs to iron out. I got real lucky with the Megasquirt (never a problem except difficult tuning). It's been install, tune and forget about it. That's probably because I was installing something that several hundred people had done before me. Most of the bugs had been worked out and all that was left for me was finding the best solution for my car. But, this is different. I'm getting way off the beaten path. Megasquirt is experimental, the guys that are using it for ignition are an offshoot of the main guys and I've split from them by trying to get to coil on plug. I'm out left of left field, and probably so far over my head that I can't even rcognize all the problems. So, I'm going to get it working on a test stand before it ever goes in the car. Dave |

Dave,
You're a genius. Keep up the great work. The sensor mounting looks great. Are you running a 36point EDIS wheel in there? Do you happen to know if that is the same setup as a modern subaru engine runs?? I woould like the option of going to a megasquirt/spark system for the EJ20DETT I am working up for my 914. It uses coil on plug as well, so I am interested in your setup. l8r, Fiid. |

Looks good Dave, I have the mounting of my SDS crank trigger done. I'll post some pic's soon.
The nice thing about my system is that you just have to get it in the general area then you adjust the timing via the controller. |

Dave,
what controller package are you going to use for the EDIS? The MegaJolt Lite Jr or the MegasquirtnEDIS??? I like the idea of the MegaJolt Lite Jr better. I hope the board comes out soon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Also, what version Megasquirt do you have? I have the v1 built (that is what I was running before my car was taken apart), but I also have an unbuilt v2 Megasquirt. thanks, |

I haven't decided yet. I have a V2 board and I'm tempted to try the MegasquirtnEDIS. I've been using the Fast idle on it to run a fast idle solenoid off of a Golf but it isn't very effective so I wouldn't mind hooking up an AAR off of the fuel pump circuit like stock. That would free up the fast idle transistor to generate the SAW signal for the EDIS. I haven't been to concerned about that part yet. I figure it should be a pretty simple hardware change. I thought I would let them get a little testing time on the code, then later this winter I would decide which side of the fence looked better. I'm still hoping UltraMegaSquirt will be ready, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm really hung up now on how to sync the cam so I can just fire 1 cylinder instead of 2 in wasted spark mode. I plan to dedicate a coil per cyliinder either as COP or twin plug. I have a friend who is an airplane mechanic and I've been picking his brain. I've ordered some transistors and hall effect switches and I think I'm going to try to switch the positive side of the primary so that it would only receive a current when it is switched on at the distributor and at the EDIS module. We'll see. I suspect I'll be smelling come burned electronics. Dave |

How the hell do you understand all that stuff? Do you have a degree in electrical engineering?

The most accurate thing I said in that whole thing was I'd probably smell a bunch of burned electronics. I orderred a whole s***load of transistors, and I plan to send a bunch of them to the local landfill. But who knows I might just get lucky. Just call me old Sparky |

If you are going to use transistors to switch the coil, make sure you put diodes on them to protect them from inductive kickback. That will probably not kill you the first time but over time they will die with no reason. Pretty annoying.
Here's an online article that shows you the basics of transistor switches and using diodes to avoid inductive kickback. http://www.rason.org/Projects/transwit/transwit.htm |

I was planning to use a zener for flyback.
Thanks Dave |

You don't need a zener, any old reverse biased diode will work. In fact a zener could be dangerous, if you reverse bias it past the zener voltage (depends on the diode) it will conduct and suck tons of current or burn out.
