actually that's a pretty good description of the surface finish ...

the huge bumps have been taken off the sand casting, but the surface still has many bumps and irregularities. then - it's polished with a flapper wheel or something to make it shiny. it's still 'rough' but it has been polished.

it's exactly what happens (on a much smaller scale) if you try to sand out a paint job before you've blocked with a big enough grit to smooth the surface -- it's shiny - but it's not flat.

i couldn't sell a set of cb's talls for $35. i recycled yhem in a manner of speaking. on the rough finish, i bet that you can still see the parting line from the casting process on them.
