I bought the car (1973 914 1.7 carbed)for Sue a few months back on Ebay, after getting her home from San Diego I found the car was much worse then in the pictures but we decided to fix it up as our dedicated autox car. I can no longer work on cars myself which bugs me to no end but between my friend Mark and our sponsor (Beetlebarn) I can still get things done. First I had Judson rebuild the engine (add said, "runs great just has small oil drip" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) The entire engine was shot and we needed a donnor just to get enough good parts to get it back together. We loaded it on the trailer and headed off to our first meet, Sue drove it in the first run group twice before I had her load it back up on the trailer, Sue finished off the day in our 2008 Honda S2000CR. The 914 was rolling from side to side so bad that in a tight corner it broke loose almost hitting a wall!
The shocks were shot and it had no swaybar. I ordered Koni yellows all the way around and a 19mm swaybar, Mark and I did the work while the Beetlebarn did the alignment. I added new Empi wheels and Toyo 1R1's. I also relocated the battery installed rollcage added decals etc. This past weekend we autox'ed at the Silverton Casino (our club sponsor) first car out at 7PM it was starting to cool down to only 107 degrees by then! The corse is very tight as we use one of the Casino's parking lot. Car did very well (no more rolling!) and we had Kelli, Sue's 16 yr old training driver so the car ran a total of 10 times. it was a 47 second course , first half wide open first gear, second half floored in second gear. Next weekend we're running at El Toro for the first and really excited about it! It will be nice seeing how other regions run their SCCA programs (Sue the registar and a BOD for our region) and even nicer in the mid 70"s!!!!! If any of you guys are there please come by and say hi, we'll be the ones standing next to yellow 914 #85 with a happy but lost look on our faces. |

So Aaron, you are choosing the SCCA El Toro event over PCA at Cal Speedway? Or are they different days? Either way, PCA OCR is having an AX at Cal Speedway on the 18th which is where I will be.
Good luck with the 914 in DSP, I am interested to see how it does as there is someone building a possibly National competitive DSP 914 in the midwest right now. We have a fast DSP 330I here in SoCal so should be a good benchmark if he is attending this event. |
