I guess I'm another one of the computer geek types amongst us. Started programming and using 'puters about 25 years ago. That was age 13/14 or so (holy crap, where did all those years go? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) )
I squeeked-by with one of those degrees with too many words that basically just means I took waaaay too many math courses. What the hell was I thinking? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif) Since then I have mainly been working in the family software biz, ultimately becoming CEO i.e. chief stress-case last year (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) It is a tiny niche business. We build enterprise apps for large high-tech manufacturers, with a lot of aerospace biz at this point. The apps keep track of all of the "stuff" in the infrastructure of the company - the tooling, computers, test equipment, lab instruments, and so forth used to build and QA their products. Basically every major US-built product that flies, goes into space, or "blows-up shit" is supported in some way behind the scenes by our apps. It's relatively enjoyable, challenging, and (usually) provides a decent amount of free time and money to enjoy family life and hobbies. Thank God for the Internet as my travel has been reduced dramatically due to email, ftp, and WebEx... biz travel sux... |
