I have a picture album of my 914, and when I cross a state line for the first time, I snap a picture at the sign that says "Welcome to Wherever". The only state that I think I'm going to have a problem with is Hawaii - since you can't exactly drive there.
However, next year is 2004, so I'm starting to plan my next major roadtrip for then. I was thinking about driving to Alaska and back. Anyone actually made that trek through the bear and wolf infested wilderness? -Rusty (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smoke.gif) P.S. This post will probably make someone's head spin around... cause I think they might rather go to Vegas or New Orleans. |

Rusty, I get up to Alaska about every other year to visit my sister in Anchorage.
We talked about taking the intercoastal ferry from Seattle and she indicated we could depart the ship in Valdez (land of paved roads). Buy your ticket and you can rent a room on board or rent deck space for your tent. You can get on and off anywhere for a (visit) and catch the next ship for no extra charge. If you get off on the Panhandle, you can get to the roads, but it is really rough. Rent a motorhome if you do this. My parents blew 2 tires on the trip. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Once in Valdez, you can drive to Fairbanks, Anchorage, The Kenai, Denali, etc. Roads are mostly paved, with patches of gravel between (frost heaves) . Don't plan on making it to Kennicot/McCarthy. The road is on the top of an old train track and the ties (and sometimes spikes) stick up through the gravel in places. A teener just ain't made for that terrain. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) The Anchorage VW dealer works on teeners, saw one being serviced. Also a coupla hardcore 411/412 fanatics up there (Eagle Rock? and on the road to Talkeetna). Go up there and you may want to stay forever.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Happens to an amazing number of people- me included. just haven't bought that oyster farm yet.... Ken |
