(IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Drove it! First time since I drove it home 1 mile off the trailer. After an intake, throttle body, & FI refresh, I drove it for about 6 miles. Ran well, but it seemed like my second choice throttle return spring still didn't have enough ass to close the butterfly properly after letting off the throttle. Installed a shorter, heavier spring, drove it 10 more miles and the car ran like a top! It shifts well, no grinding, or popping out of gear and runs strong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mueba.gif)The temp gauge on the center console seems to function properly and held steady after it was up to running temp. I definitely want to do the valves, make sure dwell, & timing are spot on, as well as put in new plugs and wires. That said, I'm pretty stoked right now. Other impressions: passenger mirror is shaky/wonky, definitely needs rear shocks & probably springs, needs a rear window butyl tape seal and the shift rod cover needs reinstalled... not to mention tons of cosmetic stuff.....projects for another day. Post some pix ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) The best I can do right now is post a minute video of the car running before I attached the throttle cable. If this works, maybe I can get some driving video in the next couple days. This is my virgin use of Youtube...so here goes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0b8vfIn-7Y |

Got some new tires to replace the 12 yr old tires on the 6 Yokohama did a reboot of the old A008’s so I couldn’t resist (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Really? That was the tire I put on my first 914 and it cornered so great. Even with my 1.7, and my dad in his vette, he couldn't keep up with me on the off ramps from the highway. Gotta love the 80's. I looked up the Yoko's. Just 16's. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) oh well. |

STEVE!!!
I was supposed to follow you on this! Would have loved to have done so! Incredible beautiful day! So kind of you to let Terri drive too...... But then I, my son, my daughter plus 2 friends spent the day on our motorcycles in the twisties of Powhatan, Cumberland, Fluvanna and Goochland. We did about 100 miles too. So now you'll have to lead me on that route again sometime - and I'll bring Rickb45 and maybe 914V8inVA too. GN About 100 miles between Windsor, Ivor, and Smithfield VA, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) with Terri driving and me navigating. This was our initial pre-run of First Settler Region's "Cabin Fever Fun Run" that was originally scheduled for earlier this month. Only made a couple of wrong turns... Found a few errors too; will fix these and try it again. |

Nagging me since I got my 914 has been a passenger side inside door handle on the driver's door - very inconvenient.....bugging me every time I drive.
Picked up a nice correct handle from tyfighter123 and installed it tonight..... Another one of 100 small details I need to fix on this sweet 914, checked off the list. Again with great help from the great crew here at 914world...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) GN |

I had a discussion with a few people knowledgeable in 964 engines, and it was determined that my oil system woes on the 4L engine are self-induced. I was runing straight 50 weight oil, which caused the excessive oil pressure on cold startup.
Last night, with my lovely wife's help (I am on limited duty right now), I got the oil cooler system on my 4.0L fixed and reinstalled the exhaust. Filled it with 20W/50 weight Valvoline VR1 oil and fired it up. It sounds great. I also reinstalled the front turn signal LED boards. I didn't know when I bought them they had a blanking circuit. I don't particularly like that. So later down the road, I am going to get a new set from Spoke that doesn't have the blanking circuit. By the time we got done, I was hurting bad, so I called it a night. I still need to test drive it, but I don't foresee any issues. |

Yesterday I was hooking up the fuel lines to the engine and noticed the fuel pressure regulator was corroded inside, so I pulled the fuel rails off and injectors.
The injectors are being sent out today for cleaning, testing with all new seals and filters installed. |

Some more of "Because I'm Bored out of my Mind" projects. Removed my old driving lights and replaced with them with a pair of Fog Light's recently refurbished. Next I refurbished my seat belt holsters with "Back to Black" and new stickers. While I was at it I installed a dual port USB outlet for my wife's iPad and iPhone. It's the black round thingy right next to the seat heater switch's. After installing it last night I lifted the cover only to find that it is lit and I had wired into a "hot" wire. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) Removed the neg battery cable and returned this AM and tied into a switched hot line. It probably would have taken 60 days to drain the battery but ............

After the "flatbed" event a couple days ago, I finally had time to troubleshoot my no-start issue.
Charged the battery overnight. Still no start. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Tested the Mallory Unilite and the module was fine. Changed coil back to the original I had swapped out two days ago. Turned key and fired right up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) But... alternator light stayed on and voltmeter showed no charging. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) At that point, I walked away because I REALLY didn't look forward to swapping out the alternator (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Did some research on 914World and began troubleshooting. After swapping VR and wiggling wires, alternator was working intermittently ??? Took it for a quick run down the road and alt light was off but then came back on. I figured it was a loose wire... just had to find it. Eventually I found culprit - loose connection on the relay board. Issue resolved (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) |

I had a similar issue with the charge light in 'HOWARD'. Found the cause to be a broken* fuse on the relay box in the engine bay - *not blown, broken ... right where the thin portion met the bullet portion at one end. Vibration of the running motor kept it moving apart intermittently.
Replaced the fuse and all was good again. |

I got a text earlier from Scott (scottthephotog) and his wife. They were going to take their 914 out for a drive. Well, we got the 4.0 running again during the week, so we took it and Elwood out. It was about an hour's drive, and I was done. Wide tires, no power steering and already sore shoulders got the best of me.
We had fun, Scott took pictures, and all of us got some sorely (pun intended) needed Teener time. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) |

Finished breaking down the suspension today. I was dreading removing the trailing arm pivot shafts after reading about all the burnt rubber. But I was pleasantly surprised when the pivots came out easily in my press. Spent a couple hours bead blasting some of the parts (many hours left to go), some got painted, others are set aside for plating.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) After a flatbed home after this glorious start:
I spend ~6 hours cleaning oil out of the engine bay, the puke tank in the "plumbing" decided to spit maybe ~2 quarts out into the left side of the engine, spilling down thru the DS helll hole and onto the headers. Very strange, after clean up, engine starts runs makes good pressure and I can't find any leaks or anything out of the ordinary. $hit day though when I thought I was going on a nice morning run with the fellow 914world group Oil appear to have poured out of this breather: |

Sorry that happened Eric. What is the oil capacity of that system? Is it possible it was overfilled? It sure cleaned up nicely. Of course I am sure it was spotless to start with too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Sorry that happened Eric. What is the oil capacity of that system? Is it possible it was overfilled? It sure cleaned up nicely. Of course I am sure it was spotless to start with too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) It has the oil "keg" in the frunk--hold something crazy like 12 quarts + This car was a concours queen for a while so it was CW clean everywhere and when I got a hold of it, it only took a weekend to get it back to white glove status. Engine oil level to full? Happened to me before.. That's the going theory--I hadn't added any oil but the previous caretaker may have. PMS suggested that since it was the first real run in the past ~6yrs for the car that there may have been oil that settled in one of the breather lines or whatever and my "spirited" drive to get up to OC may have finally brought things to the perfect storm where it tried to expand and resulted in the mess. My shoulder blades hurt today from rolling around underneath it yesterday mopping all the oil off. I've started it up several times and it's making good oil pressure, checked the 'keg' with an improvised dip stick (welding rod) and oil level seems good. Once the oil was mopped off the underside and headers I can't find anything leaking anywhere (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Going to take Oscar up on his generous offer of borrowing his trailer and take it out to Patrick Motorsports this week for a sanity check before running it again. I'm very apprehensive to just drive it with the 3.8 motor because if there is something at play I can't afford a catastrophic event on that motor, literally, its above my pay grade (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |
