Hey, Paul. This car spent most of it's life in Palm Springs, an excellent preservation environment.

How's your car coming along?

Driver's side long is a little dirty, but looks rather well preserved, rust wise. Will take a peek at the passenger's side tomorrow.

Took a quick look-see at the left trailing arm mounts - doesn't really look like anything is awry with the uni-body structure. Maybe just the trailing arm is bent at the pivot point, or the alignment plates got moved a bit? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I'll have to take some measurements when it's up in the air, and mirror them from the passenger side's measurements to be sure what's actually going on (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Mark, in that 2nd pic it looks like the inboard attach point is bent. See the cracked silver paint and the circular flanged part has a gap too. Now you can get that welder out and put it to work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I'll take a closer look at the rear suspension's issue shortly, Kent. Can you highlight the area you're referencing? Hopefully it's not too complicated of a fix ? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Finally found the right tool to get the grease cap off ... forgot I had one of these in the tool box (IMG:style_emoticons/default/screwy.gif)

Attached Image

Unbolted and moved the caliper out of the way, unscrewed the axle nut and the rotor came tumbling off in two pieces. Apparently, the hat portion had broken completely away from the disc during the accident. The broken bits might make for a nice trophy for some future 914 event (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Attached Image

With all that removed, one can clearly see that the spindle got bent downward real good. Glad that I have all new stuff waiting to go in there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Compared to all that ^^ my day was boring.

Got an email about my WTB Boxster wheel from a local P-car shop. Turned out he didn't actually have my style but had these other 7 inchers he wasn't using anymore for his spec Boxster racing. Added 5 wheels and a hose reel to my insane wheel collection...

Nice wheels, Chris (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif)

The pinch bolt on the strut sheared off when I tried loosening it, so I had to drill it out. With a little persuasion, the ball joint came loose.

Removing the tie rod end took a little more ooomph from a large hammer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) The control arm doesn't look like it took a hit, but I have refurbished 'late' ones going in when I'm ready to start reinstalling the all the 'new' suspension components.

Attached Image

With the bent strut out, confirmed that the insert had also suffered the impact effects as well.

Looking elsewhere uncovered some additional minor damage under the trunk pan. This should be an easy fix with the hammer and dolly method (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

EDIT:

I just remembered that I still have a pair of early struts at my place in AZ. I think I'll install the passenger side strut just so I can get HOWARD rolling straight again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I need to drop him off at a body shop to straighten out some dents and get a fresh paint job before changing out all the suspension goodies anyway. Yeah.

While sanding down my dash, I discovered that I've got more colors on my car than I thought. My right rear fender is yellow, my trunk is red, most of my car is Irish Green...I found my dash is yellow...and the glove box is orange. Does anyone else have an identity crisis??

Cleaned and polished my yellow 76 2.0 to prepare for my first car show since Covid. I'll be in Jamestown Saturday for the Rods to Rails car show, say hi if you're there!

I've reached the realization that repairing the the left rear suspension issue is beyond my pay grade and it's going to need a session on a Celette Bench. The inner mounting point was pushed a fraction of an inch further back from the firewall than the passenger's side, and downward by another fraction (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Also see a small gap here

I loosened the adjuster plate and attempted to winch the trailing arm inward, but that wasn't successful (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) There may be other issues with the actual trailing arm and/or the pivot shaft too, so off to a reputable body shop HOWARD will have to go ...

That spindle is ugly!! quite a bit of force required

I would for sure get the chassis on a bench to confirm dimensions and look close for other damage.

I agree, that car took a pretty solid hit. I am glad you are getting it all repaired so it can go back together and continue life.

On another note, I made it to the local Cars 'n Coffee Friday morning. This is getting to be a well attended function with incredible builds of all kinds. Here are two which stood out to me:

How's your car coming along?

I spent a good part of the 80's in SD at the beach. I wasn't so lucky. I'll be using parts of the 72', and most of the tub from the 74'. I'm pulling parts off the 72 and cleaning up as I go. Collecting side shift parts, still need a shift console and the front engine support bar. I hope to get the tub here soon. I've got lots of welding to do. I hope to have it as a car again with in a year. Hahaha...We'll see. If you hear of any good deals on the bar and console, keep me in mind will ya. Be safe.

Rennshifter started to feel real loose; turned out the screws on the base were backing out. Put some blue loc-tight on the threads and tightened it back up.

I think I have a spare front engine bar, Paul. I don't have any spare engine mounts for it, so you'll have to source those from someone. You can have the bar for shipping costs ... or ... I might be able to drop it off during my next trip to AZ (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) @Shivers.

* Another option, my neighbors here in CA have a place right in your neck of the woods. I can find out when they're going back out there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)
