It's usually not about size (Although excessive OS level logging can clog up the system drive eventually).

Some of the server software we use tends to get sluggish if it accumulates too many temporary files and memory cache. Same goes for the database cache.

When you have a busy system like this site run for a month or two without interruption, you inevitably will collect some dead weight.

It's generally easier to do this manually every other month rather than spending a lot of time trying to automate the process.
