I want to replace the carpets in my 1975 914 1.8L. I think grey would look great, though what I have now is a light tan color.
Where do you guys buy replacement carpets, and which product do you recommend? A few years ago I got off of ebay a complete set of replacements which are okay, but rather thin looking, nothing like the original. I am thinking of redoing them again, and I'd like to use a higher quality product, closer to original. (But this is for a driver quality car, so I am not going for the crazy expensive stuff.) Thanks, Andrei. |

914Rubber.com has some nice tan carpet sets (black, and gray sets too IIRC). They're not cheeeep, but real good quality sets ...

WE have both domestic and imported German carpets.
The "correct" carpet is the late German see attached I really like the early (shown with edge binding)pre 75 Attached thumbnail(s) Attached image(s) |

However the best value is the domestic black at $182 shown with a square of German black, it is hard to see the difference. The German is more dense, but as you can see much more cash.
Our carpets have a heal pad like OEM and the grommets that hold them in place, unlike others Note the grommet is shown on the domestic black. IN stock and can ship in about a day. We also don't gouge on shipping .While the calculator can be off we do charge actual. Hillsboro (us) to Florida is about $25. Attached image(s) |

I'd suggest that you go with the German made material, since it wears longer & better, so you won't be replacing it too often as a DD or often used 914, since the Domestic seems to wear in sooner.
There are other sources out there such as Autos International (Vista CA), World Upholstery (Ventura CA), Lakewell.com (Europe) who sell 914 carpet kits, but AFAIK 914Rubber is the only one doing the original style round grommets as shown in the pic above. All will be roughly in the same ball park for prices on Domestic &/or German. If you need cheaper than those, then you may want to see what a local upholstery shop who does good restorations would charge you to make up some using your existing carpet as a pattern, with what carpet selections they have, but they may be no cheaper either. Good Luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Tom /////// |

The way it's listed in interesting, looks similar to the plush domestic notice the salt and pepper option (probably the same manufacturer we use) is 120EU more. They don't look bad, but I'd get a sample before spending the big $

I got samples from Mark at 914Rubber and eventually went with the German Wool. I'm not a big fan of the perlon that came in our cars, and the domestic just didn't have the same thickness as the German Wool. For me, I thought about the bend that the carpet makes when you cover the rocker area. It makes the 90 degree bend from the sill down towards the floor. If you make a 90 degree bend with the domestic loop, you can kind of see right down to the carpet backing. That wasn't the case with the German.
I'll post a pic here in a minute. Since I bought mine Mark has made some great upgrades to the kit. The heel pad is now correct for 914's and the binding I believe is also a dark grey, which is also correct. My carpet has the old style heel pad and black binding... |

I think the German tan would look awesome. You should do it, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed or regret it. |

Yup, from 914Rubber. My picture is the imported German loop. My 1974 had this same type of carpet in it when I bought it, although I believe it came from an early car. But as mentioned above, I'm not a fan of the Perlon.
My original carpet was black and almost white. The new carpet from 914Rubber is black and almost a blue-ish silver color. I'm sure my original color had just faded and that the silver color is correct. I still have items to restore on my interior, but carpet is just one of those things that instantly makes the car look 100% better on the interior. |

Anyone with photos of the 914rubber German loop charcoal with gray bindings? Samples looks pretty close to my stock carpet set.
