I discovered yesterday that my thermostat is stuck permanently in the extended position. Given that I live in Canada, I would like my engine to warm up reasonably fast, so I am looking for a replacement thermostat. I'm not yet willing to fork over the $150 US to buy a new one, and I assume they aren't repairable.

Thanks in advance for any offers!
Matt

I don't have anything handy, but I just found this link while googling for a picture:

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Thermostats.html

It actually sounds like they are repairable to a certain degree. I might give it a try.

Hi, if you do a search on Kijiji with Porsche 914 there is a guy in Ontario that sells new ones for 153 $ CDN I believe.

Not cheap but at least you don't have to add conversion costs.

You need to broaden the search to the province level.

I'm pretty sure I have a good used one. I'll dig it out tomorrow and post a pick.

I found the ad:

Here's the email string I had with the seller:

Me: Hi, Are the thermostats new or used? If used, have they been tested to verify functionality? Also, is the listed price for 1, or all 4? Thank you! Matt

Seller: new in box

Me: Thanks. Is the price for 1, or all 4?

Seller: for the quantity a car came with how many was that
1 picture can give 4 angles
if there where 99 woud you ask the same question

I honestly don't know why some people have to be so rude. I mean, it seems to actually take more effort than just answering the question, plus there's no way I'm buying it now.

That being said, the pictures sure don't look like they are new in box, and I'm still confused if he has 4 or 1. And yes, if he showed 99, I would definitely ask the same question!

Or maybe I'm just stupid.

You're not stupid, the seller is a douche. I'm tempted to ask him the same question you did just for fun. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Yes but.....

He's a parts guy he knows what it's worth. I did a street view, it's a small indy FLAPS.
There's some real douchebag, cheap ass, time wasting VW dudes cruising toronto kijiji, it could be the hundredth time he's been asked "do I get 4?" or "I'll offer you $50" or "would you trade for VW toys" or "I have this real nice cat".....
It's so bad I don't sell parts on kijiji.

I have this one guy who wanted me to do a line bore on a case, the case was totally FUBAR...like in there was a hole in the top where the rod went through it.
He wanted me to JB weld it, I said no, "Why not? I have the pieces." "NO find a better case" "but...but it will work...."
Now he's back "can you weld up this head, repair the studs, guides and a valve job?" "no find a better core" I was waiting for him to say "you could JB weld it."
Then he found a better core, "how much?" Too much, then he asks how much for just the guides, I told him the price to blast the heads and replace the guides. "You don't have to blast them" I replied "then you have to blast them because none of my tools are touching those filthy heads".

He phoned me on Saturday said they were clean and started arguing that the price I gave him was almost half of what I know for sure I quoted him.

It was all I could do to not to lose my shit.
I just told him the truth, sorry I'm booked and can't do them right now. Bye!
