I've taken enough hints from Pete Stout about my rear bumper being a late chrome and my car being an early 914-6 GT replica. I get it Pete (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Looking to buy or trade for an early 914-6 chrome rear bumper. Mine's pretty much perfect so yours should either be in similar condition or you include some cash... Here's mine. Attached thumbnail(s) |

I sure see a lot of 914's but have you ever thought of just posting a pic of the bumper. Do you expect people to look at your excellent bumper, which car is it on???. Pics.

I, too, occasionally get grief (not from Pete but from other "know-it-alls") about havin the "wrong" rear bumper on my 1970 914-6. Problem is, it's the same bumper that was on the car when I drove it away from the dealership after purchasing it brand new. It's a June '70 build. I can only assume that at that point Porsche was out of the originals and slapped on what was on the shelf, a later model bumper. Every panel on the car and both bumpers are the ones it left the dealership with. |

Pete's (IMG:style_emoticons/default/poke.gif) aside Rob,
I really don't see why it should matter which bumper on a later MY clone/tribute 914-anything!? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Much ado about nothing IMHO! Either way, it's never going to be a real 914-GT, nor even a real 1970-71 MY 914, & it only takes away from the very limited stock on a short run & hard to source part for those with "real 70-71's" who will need them for their correct restos. There is no place where it would ever possibly be judged for authenticity/originality - since it's not a real early factory 6 (unless I'm misreading your 914s in the sig block) - not in your PCA Zone(s) where originality isn't judged, not at Parade - since it's a clone/tribute, not at any AACA/CCCA, Pebble Beach, Amelia Island nor any of those other non-PCA shows for the same reason - it's just not an original - but a custom resto-mod build, even as nice as it appears to be. Save yourself time, money, effort & headaches, & just tell Pete that he's wrong & that the early rear bumpers need to be preserved for the real early 914s. JMHO! Every panel on the car and both bumpers are the ones it left the dealership with. Actually not a problem! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) As the OO, I assume that you have your original sales documentation, & maybe some old snapshots of the car back-in-the-day, so just put together that documentation & you should be fine for anything in official judging. I don't know the official changeover date on the bumpers - if it can even be tied down, as with any other MY parts in the mixed parts bins of the day, nor would anyone else. The provenance of you being the original owner with that bumper on your car since day one should set the date for your specific 914-6 in any case. Just take it as an educational moment to teach those know-it-alls something, to broaden their knowlege base! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I just wished that I could've afforded even a new /4 in late 1970 - let alone a -6, but had to make do with my $800 used `68 Opel Kadett that I bought in Fall `69, in order to pay for college starting that Fall `70! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Cheers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Tom /////// for not entering a vehicle |

I'm with the side that says just enjoy the car and don't worry about it (absolutely your choice obviously of what you want to do)
In terms of authenticity, my 911 was built in the last couple of weeks of the 72 production year and did come with a number small bits from the 73 production year. I didn't own it from new but they are well documented in the file and also have been pulled up about them, but I was told once by an old factory guy at the Le Mans 98 factory party (long story how we got in) that swapping parts from different model years was common around model year change over Parts bin ran out for a particular bit, newer model stuff was in & it got thrown into the line. It's that simple Celebrate your cars little oddities if it has them |

Mine is a daily driver beater. Slippery slope -916 trans -left hand ignition instead of the plastic 75 steering column -75 Plastic gauge console -914-6 water bottle? -etc... It's only money and time!! The later chrome bumpers do look better, but it's your car do what makes you happy. |

Not sure how I became the boogie man on this one? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Rob, I honestly don't remember giving you grief about putting an early rear bumper on your car. I view your 914 as a very cool hot rod rather than a GT replica—not that what I think matters much.
The only reason my 1973 914 is running an early rear bumper is pure chance: I got rear-ended in 1995 and the bumper shop didn't like either core I sent...so it used one of its cores—which happened to be an early bumper. A fellow 914 enthusiast approached me at the Parade in Portland that year to inform me I had the wrong bumper (I didn't know) and asked if I'd trade with him; I said sure so long as the 1972-1973 bumper on his 914-6 was equally nice. When he called my dorm room, he told me I should pay for shipping. I was a college student with a $15 couch, and felt that, since he was the one asking to swap, he should pay for shipping. He didn't like that, then said my 914 didn't deserve that bumper. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) Suddenly, I thought the subtly different early bumper looked really good on the car. Still do, 22 years later. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) P.S.: I wouldn't have recommended chrome bumpers for your 914 anyway. Were it mine, I'd run satin black GT bumpers, a GT front valance, no rear valance, and chrome foglight grilles, like the car below. This car inhabits my dreams. Attached image(s) |

I, too, occasionally get grief (not from Pete but from other "know-it-alls")... Uh, sure hate to get lumped in on that bandwagon. If anything, studying Porsche for the last 20-25 years has shown me how little I know. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Save yourself time, money, effort & headaches, & just tell Pete that he's wrong & that the early rear bumpers need to be preserved for the real early 914s. Argh. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) When it comes to cars and car parts, imho the owner of the car or part gets to decide what's "right." To me, that usually has to do with what makes the owner happy. They're just cars… |

I know I have at least one triangular inset rear, I'd have to pull it off the top shelf to make sure on the condition. I had several re-chromed 15 years ago or so, and I don't off hand remember what I sold and kept.
