Do I need to take the steering wheel off to take the odometer out, not a real lot of room to pull the odometer off if I don't

No ,but I always cover the steering column with tape to prevent marking the paint.

Also forgot to mention your speedo may be stuck in the surround after being in there for years...mine was,the rubber ring gets sticky,if you can't move it take your fuel/combo gauge out first and then reach your speedo through that opening,helps to undo/refit the drive cable also,good luck.
