clean fuel cap. random question. were the metal caps originally yellow zinc plated or stainless steel/polished like that?

Some were clear zinc others were yellow zinc. Depended on who made them and what year.

Up to mid 74 when they changed to the plastic expansion tank and cap.

Yep; mine is Spring 74 and has exactly this cap - polished with VW logo.

My 74 had the plastic, but kicked the expansion tank out and went with the early filler and cap.

Yeah, my LE (2/74) has a metal cap & expansion tank but my other '74 (6/74) has a plastic cap & expansion tank.
