Quick search:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=357269 http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=302682 There's more threads on Fiberglass hoods and decks as well as other parts. Believe there are some good quality parts available. Hopefully others chime in. Never ran FG hood or deck on any street 914. Didn't see the point. |

I don't know the source for the authentic looking balsa reinforced hoods but they were bought around twenty years ago from a pretty well known 914 racer in Pennsylvania. Fitting the lids was not too difficult and bodywork was minimal. I did not seek more than fiberglass should be. The bumpers came without brackets. I fabricated them from aluminum. |

I have Getty Design 'GT' style lids with the balsa wood and they're really cool - great quality and substantial weight savings especially if you ditch all the OE spring parts. Mine were installed around 2011 so I don't have any really current info on Getty or alternatives.
For sure there's lots of other data and pics on the forum |

Glass is lighter but will never fit as well as the open steel. It just depends what your goals are.

Glass is lighter but will never fit as well as the open steel. It just depends what your goals are. True but both of my front and rear steels were Place holders as they were never any good to begin with but in the past 9 years since I bought the project and ultimately “finished “ it never found a good deal on fiberglass which is what I always wanted at a reasonable price |

Has anyone made carbon fiber parts yet?
That sounds like the logical "next step". I'm guessing the "see through" hood was Lexan or something like it. |

Has anyone made carbon fiber parts yet? @technicalninja Getty Design used to make CF parts but they stopped because people kept complaining that the strands didn't align perfectly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) I got one of their last CF dashboards. |

@Maltese Falcon I drive FM311 often. Sounds like you have had work done at Lozano Brothers.
I’m wanting to add unfinished fiberglass with balsa wood mostly for the looks, I bought the car from D. Driver out of Reno NV. It’s a x track car, so not concerned about not being factory. |

I wouldn’t be surprised if you save 15+ lbs per hood but it takes a lot of work to make glass look nice and the curve of the hood rarely matches the fender. But I’m all for whatever floats your boat. I wish there was a cost effective one. To expensive for me According to their website, Rennspeed has them for $500....fiberglass w or w/o headlights. This seems like a reasonable price compared to all the other options out there.....I guess you'd have to find someone who has purchased from them to verify quality and fitment. I don't see where they make the balsa version. https://rennspd.com/product/914-stock-front-hood/ |
