I went to look at the Sears website myself to see what was available and the cost of the sets. I thought about the same set that Aaron did but then I had a second thought. If you look at the sets half of the the sockets and wrenches are standard and the other metric. I have one of the larger sets (or have had over the years) and now that most everything is metric half of the tools won't be used (or used very little). They also don't include the larger wrenches and sockets. When I purchased mine it came with a 3/4" drive set (a long time ago) which I ended us trading for some car parts.
So where is all this leading? Let him pick out the tools he feels that he needs, then he can get some that he wants. Just a thought. And thanks Aaron for thinking of this. Mike P.S. I really like fluke meters, reliable and dependable. |

I was looking at those huge sets and I just don't see the benefit. But maybe I was missing something. Get him some specialty tools. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/confused24.gif)

Thank you guys for this massive outpouring of generosity. we have way more than enough to get clayton all squared away + the inbound checks that are on their way. that being said, i think we are ok for donations now. Thank you all for making this possible. ill have paypal mail me a check today and we will put it with the other checks and go chase a gift card. to all of you who supported this, whether you know clayton or not, thank you. You guys are what makes this community what it is... it aint about the cars, its about the people! Take him to harbor freight, and then go by a titty bar and buy him some lapdances with the change. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif)

I say cash... You can't buy quality tools with a gift card. And if you were to buy sets... Snap-On or Würth would be the only brands I'd buy for a A-1 Class guy like Claytonavich.

If you want my .02 since I'm a CSOB,,,,
I would buy him a complete sears metric set thru E-BAY. There is a guy that has complete sets of used craftsman stuff for really cheap (stolen used tools replaced with used tools!). I'm talking about 1/2 metric, 3/8 metric, and 1/4 metric. Make sure to buy a few CV bolt tools too. Get some wrenches and ratchets, and a DVOM. And he can spend the remaining cash on specialty tools that he may need. Pliers, dykes (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) , channel locks, vice grips. Weber jet reamer,,, W/B O2,, i get ahead of myself,,,,, I'm looking for a link right now.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CRAFTSMAN-1...613542702QQrdZ1 That's how I'd stretch the dollars,,,,, -Rob |

Hi Fellas and Toast,
I just got done reading through about half of this thread. I had to take a couple of minutes out back of the coffee house to compose myself. I don't know what to tell ya. I can't even figure out what to write at this moment. Simply thank you. I will write more later... Clayton Twystd1 |

I'll have to second the CASH nomination. If you pay list at Snap-on, that will get him a 3/8" socket set. If he wants to take the $ and get the comfort of a good woman for the evening..... so be it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif)

Give the man the cash so he can replace what was lost. It wasn't all necessarily Craftsman and those multi piece kits won't necessarily have all that pieces that he had in his box either.

Strap On is a waste of $$ Yes it's the best but I have been werking on cars for a living for several years and have 3 Strap On items. Craftsman is a damn good tool for a damn good price and if you catch them on sale it is usually an incredible deal! Get Clayton a large set of very good quality tools instead of a small set of great ones IMHO.

Hello again folks,
First off, This is one of the most humbling experiences I have had in my life time. Grateful isn't a good enough word for how I feel. So simply ... Thankyou... So if you are wondering what I am going to do with your gift.. Here is what I am going to do. Spend a lot of time at Pawn shops trying to make a deal on craftsman or better. That box that I had would cost over 1400.00 to replace if I bought the goods new. (I did the math last night so i could figure what I need to replace) And there were many specialty tools that are expensive to replace. Thats what is really kicking my ass. So I will buy as much as I can used but in great condition. And fill out the rest of the tools with hit and miss purchases from pawn shops or buy directly from Matco and Sears. Thats the plan... To spend your hard earned money wisely and with great care. And ya know something... I was wondering what it would be like to show up at a gathering without tools and NOT working on cars from the time that i get there to the time I go home. I hated that thought. It was REALLY bumming me out. I was stuck in a depression that you guys might not understand. I LIVE to tool on these cars whan we have a BBQ. I look forward to it for weeks. Knowing i have a chance to show up and give to the guys and help a 30 year old car get back on it's feet. Simply makes me feel good. I can't explain it. It give me purpose ... Just thanks.. Twystd1 |

I think you're gonna have to collect Toast's contribution in person (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) , don't think you're gonna find that in a pawn shop or catologe, have fun, lol
Later, Don By the way, you're very welcome. |
