Timo had asked about the weight of the 4 piston caliper for the 200 series Volvos (offered for both solid and vented rotors)

Not as much of a difference as one would think (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Mike,
What is the difference in size (sq. in) in the pads?

Interesting. Only 2 lbs.

But, they are heavy. I have seen and tested them. We have lots of Volvos here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

You get 2 extra pots with Volvo calipers. They weight a litle more, but if you can live with that what are the other advantages ?? I dont know if they are cheep there, but they are quite a cheep here. That is one advantage.

I think this is a conversion you can make, but the benefits are very questionable.

I have a set of these for my Chalon V-8 project. Mine are for the vented rotors. The pads are literally twice the size of the stock 914 pads. Much larger than the 320I pads and are more squared. I think they look better. Here is what mine came out like.

Here's a pic of 240 calipers for vented disks. Notice the size of the pads.

So what about fitment problems? Do the just bolt up and work? Do you need spacers of any sort?

Swood... most the guy's who sell he Volvo conversion parts sell a brass adapter for 1 line into the those two holes.

DaveP.

The Volvos bolt up to the Carrera struts (3.5 inch spacing)

Cool. I stand corrected. I must be thinking of the Nissan Pathfinder calipers. They look identical to the Volvo but dont have the funky line arrangement and fit the same rotor.

You can avoid the extra line by drilling through the base of each piston bore at about 45 deg from each side so that on each side the fluid flows from the lower cylinder to the upper. I did it this way and it works.

Ok,does the stock 17MM piston or 911 19MM piston in the master cylinder have enough volume to move the eight pistons in front and two out back without bottoming? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

are you able to use a larger rotor? Bigger pads are fine if you are using them once or twice, but repeated heavy use at speed will simply overheat the smaller rotors. There is a reason the larger calipers/pads have larger rotors and/or more exocitc materials (carbon)....

Steve,

The 19mm works fine.

As far as the rotor goes.. stock SC is the only one I'm aware of that fits. The Carrera rotor is too wide for the pads.

Damn.. your only the second person to understand that you cant just slap a bigger caliper/pad on a rotor without some issues. I have been trying to say that about the BMW calipers for several years now.

Would the heat issue really be an issue if your only on the street or autox?
On the track I can see it happening........

Depends on "your" streets. If I take your car out on HWY9 near Santa Cruz Ca. with BMW calipers and hang it all out. I promise fade just as bad as the stock calipers if not worse.

I'm sure Tn has some roads where heavy braking is required. For daily street use and AutoX they will be fine... but then I question why the person installed them if that is all they where going to use the car for.
