Rusty, I get up to Alaska about every other year to visit my sister in Anchorage.
We talked about taking the intercoastal ferry from Seattle and she indicated we could depart the ship in Valdez (land of paved roads). Buy your ticket and you can rent a room on board or rent deck space for your tent. You can get on and off anywhere for a (visit) and catch the next ship for no extra charge. If you get off on the Panhandle, you can get to the roads, but it is really rough. Rent a motorhome if you do this. My parents blew 2 tires on the trip. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Once in Valdez, you can drive to Fairbanks, Anchorage, The Kenai, Denali, etc. Roads are mostly paved, with patches of gravel between (frost heaves) . Don't plan on making it to Kennicot/McCarthy. The road is on the top of an old train track and the ties (and sometimes spikes) stick up through the gravel in places. A teener just ain't made for that terrain. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) The Anchorage VW dealer works on teeners, saw one being serviced. Also a coupla hardcore 411/412 fanatics up there (Eagle Rock? and on the road to Talkeetna). Go up there and you may want to stay forever.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Happens to an amazing number of people- me included. just haven't bought that oyster farm yet.... Ken |

"Off Road" really isn't the correct phrase, it is actually "The Road". Meaning that it is the only road for you to drive on, no matter what shape it is in. These aren't the same roads you are used to driving on. Not the nice interstate system you are used to. A few years back I tore the upper control arm off an S15 when I hit a pothole in North West Ontario. Ripped it right off the frame. Used a cinch cargo strap to hold it in place and limped into the next town. I had to leave the truck because it would take 3 days to get the parts and to line up someone to weld the arm back on. Flew home
and back a week later to pick it up, $1,200 airfare and $500 to fix the truck. Not to mention the 3 hour car ride to get to the bus, which was another 5 hour ride to get to the airport. You meet the nicest criminals on buses. AAA would be a good source for trip information. Ferry schedule's, road condishion info, ect. |

lawrence, not to mention that the al-can is repaired during the summer months. your paint job will be ruined and dented. you will be sharing the road with alot of semi's and the before mentioned motorhomes. the stray moose or deer. imagine a drive that's like 2 weeks in the field. a logistic nightmare. take a look at www.akferry.com. the ship leaves from bellingham wa. about 75 miles north of seattle. you can take your car with you.

A guy I'm in class with told me that 100% of the ALCAN is paved now (for the 50 year anniversary). That's 100%, minus the washouts, mudslides, etc. Hmmmm. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) |

Lawrence,
It's been done. A rally bloke in a 914/6 GT did it several years ago. Got written up in Pano. Can't think of the name off the top. He welded up the car significantly before the trip. Jeff Zwart? DaveP |

I remember the Pano article. The guy broke a suspension console in Mexico, and had to weld it up in a little gas station.
He had significant support during the trip. It was from Mexico (even further south than that?) to Alaska. |
