What do you think... will this look nice when finished, or should I go seat shopping?
The idea is to end up with a speedster-esque 914 seat. I'm too tall to use the headrest, and with my drivers floor lowered and the seat bolted to the floor, while the passenger seat is stock on rails, from the rear it looked kinda silly through the rear window with the headrests at different heights. Obviously it will be finished nicely with a smooth round arch, and the stock backpad will be replaced and rebuilt so the short seat fits right in (i.e. padding will be added where the headrest was removed). I'll be getting the interior done in 4-6 weeks or so, so I have time to think about this, but what do you guys think? Step one... "No wait! Stop! Put me back in the car! I was so happy there! What are you doing to me?!?!" Attached image(s) |

Yeah, that works.
The Recaro buckets that came in the (when they did come with) GTs had the headrests removed 90% of the time. Have you seen a picture of them? Something like this: http://www.vintageseats.com/images/outlaw.jpg M |

if you're doing track events - as the harness eyebolts indicate - what will you be doing for head restraint ? i don't think i'd be comfortable with nothing behind my helmet but the window. are you planning a roll bar or cage with a head-restraint pad ? i think you'd have trouble getting through tech with no head support... even if so, a HANS might be a real good idea ...

Yes, I have a bolt in roll bar for track events. Hadn't thought about a head restraint/pad, but that would be pretty easy to add to the bar. Good idea.
Hadn't seen those seats in the link - yes, that looks great! (that looks like an early 911 seat though) -Steve |

I think its a great idea Steve. I love the Cal-look bugs that have the lowback in them and I really like this look.
I understand all the safety ... but how did they survive back in the day ?? Where the cars that slow ?? B |

What if you took a head rest that has the support post sticking out the bottom, and had them so they fit in the harness bar, or the firewall. I've seen some of them come with very long posts, and was what I am considering using for my seat.
If think about it, you should be able to make them easily removeable also. |

Safety: I've also seen a 914 with a pad/redrest mounted to the rear glass (it may have been plexan [read: drillable]). For me, removing the headrest is a non-issue from a safety point of view, because if I lean back my head hits the window first. My shoulders/neck were on the "headrest". Adding something to the glass could improve the safety for me...

I'm building a pair as well. I'll be lopping off the head rest and putting the pad through the lexan as the GT you saw. I'll also be building contoured boulsters. Vinyl side and 70's cord for the inserts.
That's the "plan" anyway... |

I got it.
Use one of those worthless "harness bars" and mount a headrest that swivels up and down on it. It will work great and should be in the right spot for anyone over 6 foot tall. You can thank me later. Oh.. dont mount anything to the rear glass. B |

Yeah, I'm thinking that other than "comfort", a headrest mounted to a piece of glass does NOT sound like fun in the event of unexpected g-forces...
What about making the stock-ish 914 seats taller? Basically moving the headrest up and maybe tweaking the angle of the seat back and headrest for clearance if necessary? |

Anyone know who makes those swivel headrests? The 4-5" round ones? My spyder has no headrests, and in a simulated crash test (stationary, myself as dummy) My head would hit the roll bar right quick. I want to make a small X Brace on it, and mount a headrest.
