Hey Z - what are you doing for lighting? The usual shop-florescents or something different (better)?
I need to either add a few more tubes or go to a different setup completely in my garage. I can't see a friggen thing to do any serious work in there after dark or even on cloudy/rainy days. Plus the florescents "buzz" (is that a bad ballast or a normal thing) and it is a bit irritating. Any new date for the party? |

Looking at three sets of three double flourescents.....with seperate circuits. The party is on hold until the roof and driveway are put in.

Cool - thanks. I'm thinking the flourescents are prolly fine but the PO here only installed 4, twin-tube fixtures for a "2+1" bay garage (partial wall in between). From what I know of the PO, he was not exactly the DIY type who spent any significant time in the garage.... I replaced the bulbs with a mix of HD shop bulbs and full-spectrum "sunlight" bulbs, which helped but not enough.
Could be worse -- I think the stock builder setup was a single incandescent bulb (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

I've got 4 4' 2 bulb flourescents (40 watt) in my single car garage... It gets the
job done, but if I had a 3 car I would put in 10 to 12 units... If your flourescents are humming - it's the ballasts... Thom |

I put in 6, 8 foot doubles....they buzzzzzzzzzzzz, but there is plenty of light.
Too late for Mikey, but a light colored floor (white in my case) reflects enuff light to make drop lights unnecessary. My floor is gettin pretty torn up (paint prep probs) and when I replace it , it'll be white again. Winter project: paint the ceiling & walls.....white, natch. |

JP nailed it.
If you want a bright shop... use a bright floor with good lighting. I forget what is my current shop space.. but I do know that they suck about half the energy that the old light fixtures suck. I'll shoot a pic of them one day. B |

With the flourescents, you want the T8 style bulbs and fixtures, they have a built in electronic ballasts, so they start faster, buzz less, flicker less, and are brighter...plus the bulb is thiner... I just bought two 8' (four 4' bulbs) units at Home Depot for about 35bucks each I think... and I think the bulbes are a little more expensive also, but they are way better than the T12 stuff...now I am just waiting on the power to be finished in the shop so I can hook them up...
