I like the look (and ease of replacement) of the bolted-on GT flare. Does anyone have detailed (up-close) pics of this treatment? What size/number/type of screws or bolts were used.
Please post pics Thanks BH Attached image(s) |

The white one is Scott Schroeder's car. He's on the board.

I think most of what people refer to as “bolt on” flares are actually riveted. The rivets I used were 3/16"dia. by 3/4" long, measured from the top of the rivet to the bottom of the shoulder.
If your building a race car check out High Performance House's flare system. Attached image(s) |

I put riveted flares on my race car and learned several things: Use "large head" rivets, available from Racer Parts Wholesale and a backing washer so they will not pull loose. Get a pneumatic riveter such as the low cost one from Harbor Freight as it is much easier to use than a manual one. Get a couple of packs of the right size Cleco fasteners and a pair of the Cleco pliers from Racer Parts to hold them on with as you drill all the holes. Install the flared rocker panels on first using the jack point opening as a locator then fit the flares to mate with the ends of the rocker panels. Oh yea, the large head rivets also come in colors besides natural aluminum. Good luck

Hi All -
I unfortunately do not have pics on my office computer, I will post some this evening. Mine are bolt on - no rivets. The gasket I used between the flare and the body is a "heavy duty" vw bug fender gasket. The heavy duty moniker gives toy a bigger bead. They were super cheap - like 10.00 for the whole car. The flares use a stainless rounded button head phillips machine screw on a hard rubber washer. Undernieth is a small fender washer and nylock nuts. This was what the guys at Better Bodies told me they were using on their GT2 body kits. I did mine this way as I loved the look of the old 934, and I simply dont trust the adhesives in terms of future cracks (we had a 70 degree temp swing here in less than 6 hours - and that is not uncommon). I have had them off several times - it makes strut/shock and brake work SO easy. Sorry for the delay - again, check back later tonight tomorrow. Scott S |

QUOTE(Scott Schroeder @ Dec 17 2003, 09:12 AM) I did mine this way as I loved the look of the old 934... I have had them off several times - it makes strut/shock and brake work SO easy. Scott, thanks for the info (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Totally! The "bolted-on" treatment looks so business like (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) I like the idea of being able to remove for brake/suspension maintenance.. Did you use the "flared" rockers as well? Where did you purchase your flares? The prices at www.rennspd.com seem very reasonable. Anyone have experience w/ them? Did you have to do any trimming on the fiberglass or just prep/paint & bolt-on? I'd like to see some close-ups of the rocker/flare interface Thanks! BH |

I bought one from Performance Parts, two from Pelican and one from GT racing due to everyone having inventory issues. Yes, they required a great deal of prep work. Each flare had a different shaped flange where they met the body. I spent several hours using a big upright drum sander to get them the same. I was also surprised at how many pin holes and imperfections there were in a couple of them. So, yeah, lots of the typical fiberglass finish time to get them "right". I am still not completely satisfied - but I am pretty anal.
Yes, I have the normal GT flared rockers. I am a big believer that you have to have these to get the flares on the car correctly. I mounted them on the car first before I did anything else with the fenders - especially the cutting! |

QUOTE The prices at www.rennspd.com seem very reasonable. Anyone have experience w/ them DON'T DO IT! I bought both bumpers, valance and rockers from them. Every single piece had to be cut and reworked. I have other glass pieces on my car and I got them from Mark Bartosh (classifieds in Pano). My flares came from AIR. Marks stuff is the best. AIR is good. I say this because I want you to know that I realize "all glass" will need "some" work. Rennspeeds stuff needs some "MAJOR" work. At least the batch I got... Rennspeed breakdown: Front bumper - Two left mounts glassed into the bumper. Had to cut the right on and reweld it. Valance - Hung out 1"+ on each side. Had to cut a "v" and reglass them. Serious PITA. Rear Bumper - Had to grind out copiuos amounts from each corner where the car meets the bumper... still finalizing the fit on that one (working front to back) Rockers - concave curve on the top. I will glass in a hinge at the back to emulate the rally car rockers and eliminate the problem with the front fitting and the back side being about 1/2" too high! Need pictures or was that scary enough? E. P.S. I don't want to harp but that was my experience. If any others have had better luck please weigh in... |

well, it sounds like w/ rennspd, you get what you pay for....
Are AIR's flares (hey, that rhymes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) ) similar in price to Mark's stuff? |

I think Mark's a little less expensive. I don't know if he has flares though. I got both hoods from him and all my 911 RS stuff (ducktail, hood, bumpers). I'm thinking about getting 914 doors from him... not sure if I want to go glass on those though.

Um.. I have yet to see a replica rocker that was correct. I dont personally suggest using the F/G rocker as a guide to do anything.
