The part of Lake Tahoe/Reno I'm talking about having it, is not in California, its Nevada. If we went around the lake, we would go through CA.

Lake Tahoe has a lot to offer. Cool any time of the year, beautiful, plenty of cheap rooms in the summer with ample guarded parking available, night time activities, dancing, shows, bordellos (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif) etc.
There is plenty of great rides besides just driving around the lake. The Markleeville area around 88, 89 and highway 4 has some great twisties and scenery. You could plan a day drive to Calaveras Big Trees, a great spot for the trees and a picnic. Since I am so close I would offer shop services if needed and a possible BBQ depending on the dates. Here are a few pictures of the area. |

First of all I think Tahoe and Medford are great venues. The only other one I can think of that may be better is................... MONTEREY! Cool weather, great drives, Golf, plenty of tourist stuff for families like the Aqaurium, Cannery Row, 17 mile drive, wine tasting in the Carmel Valley. etc. and of course.............................LAGUNA SECA and Marina airport AutoX venue!!!!!!!!! About 400 miles closer than Irvine for the PNW folks. 350 miles from SoCal, 900 miles from Seattle, 90 miles from most points in the SF Bay area, 900 miles from Utah, Several Airports within 2 hours for those not bringing a 914, Large 914 support contingent. I'm willing to take lead on Monterey. Is someone going to organize Tahoe if that is the consensus? With that being said, I am sure Jamie and Todd could put on a great WCR in Medford. Let the people decide! Jim Monterey would be pretty awesome. Jim, if you could get Laguna Seca, I'd mortgage my soul to have a running 914. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) Laguna Seca is probably impossible. It is actually a city or county park now and they only allow racing a few times a year to keep the noise and traffic down for the locals who live across from the entrance. Unless you cuddle up to an organization like Trackmasters or NASA... Get your group their own run group etc... Yep at Laguna Seca we would have to tag along with another group to make it possible, but there are groups running every month thru the spring and summer including PCA, POC, Trackmasters, etc. The Backup plan would be an autox, and again we could tag along with another group to keep costs down. I like Joe's idea of coinciding with the historics or ALMS but camping at those events fills up a year in advance but would provide another activity for the weekend. All that being said, a mix of activities is best anyway as some like to track their cars, some like to show n'shine, and some like the group drives; while others like some or all of the above. It looks like Medford and Monterey have some momentum as does Tahoe. Who is gonna step up and volunteer to plan Tahoe? As Joe said, I believe enthusiasm is high in the beginning and most of the helpers evaporate as the event approaches. Ask McMark, Greenie, and Joe Sharp how that works out. The lead person should plan on doing most or all of the planning IMHO. Sending JRust and Todd Endlund a PM right now, maybe a poll is in order. Jim |

OK, just for grins I called the Horizon Casino at Lake Tahoe and talked to the group manager. They would offer $59.00 weekend rooms for the event (and probably $39.00 weekday rates), section off and cone off a section of guarded parking, $9.95 buffet with a section just for us and they have experience with large car events. If the group got VERY large, we can get better rates. The joy is very little preparation needs to be done, no formal deposits to hold a group of rooms and even if people wait to the last minute the rates for the rooms aren't a killer. The rates are based on choosing a weekend this time of year and not on one of their peak weekends and are so cheap it doesn't warrant camping.
** It is possible that we may be able to have an auto-cross at the airport that is close to the hotels. I have a call in to the manager and am waiting for a reply I would be willing to "participate" in the arrangements and events but not all on my own. I would also be willing to throw a BBQ at my shop either before or after the event. Best I can offer.... I think the coast is awesome too. I don't know how easy it is to get uncrowded roads on a weekend in that area so others that live there will need to chime in. Another alternative might be Yosemite National Park as it has something for everyone. However it might be more difficult to get safe parking and good rates. |

Irvine to Medford = 11 hours
Sacramento to Medford = 5 hours Seattle to Medford = 7 1/2 hours Portland to Medford = 4 1/2 hours I'm good with whatever. I'm willing to take the lead in Medford. If it's somewhere else no problem as I won't have to plan it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . I just think Medford is more centrally located & won't be insanely hot. I'm also a fan of keeping it in the coastal states. Still I'm good with whatever everyone wants. I just hope those deciding are people that will actually come to the event & participate (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) . That isn't meant as a shot to anyone. Just hoping for the best turnout ever (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) |

(drinking in the parking lot would not fly in slo) Depends... if we let the city know about the event and have all the permits ready... I would be happy to look into that BTW... then it shouldn't be a problem. SLO has little gatherings that quaffe wine and eat stinky cheese all the time and they love to promote this place as a destination spot for groups like ours. In fact many of you may already know this but the 356 alternates each year SLO and Cambria. I believe they have wine, beer and all the usual party stuff. Paso is great too but there is the possibility of it being hot. The paso Wine fest was this last weekend as well and it got up to 105 in some spots. Elliot- You mentioned having a connect with the airport, I would really like to get a/x dates going here would you be interested in working on that with me? Also do you own a white 74 that is often parked near the Firestone Walker Brewery? I'll talk to someone at the airport and with the local PCA guys. There used to be a white 74 that parked in front of the Fastenal building. I spoke with him briefly about a year ago. I haven't seen the car in a long time. |

I haven't seen the car in a long time. Great! I am a PCA member also and would love to help out to get this going. Selfishly I feel I need to a/x again (last time was 2002) before I hit DE's. That was the car i was talking about.. never talked to him... obviously not you. Yosemite would be pretty cool, but it could be quite a headache. Working with DNC (the concession company that runs the hotels/food/shops) is difficult as they are very large and it would be very expensive. Parking wouldn't be much of a problem, but I doubt they would be able to cone much off or reserve any spaces. The park speed limit is 35 and even 25 in some spots, any drives would be a serious cruise and we would be limited to 41 to glacier point or big trees grove and highway 140 out to mariposa. If we were lucky 120 to tuolumne might open but it usually happens the wednesday before Memorial (yep, day before yesterday). But the ultimate Yosemite nighmare???? Someone would leave food/chapstick/toothpaste/a candy bar wrapper in their car and we would have to watch in horror, or stumble upon the scene afterwards, as a bear ripped a 914 apart like it was a sardine can. I have watched it happen to a car in camp 4 , and while I admit it was slightly entertaining due to the "My God I didn't think that was possible" factor I would feel super bad if that happened to anyone/car here. Your car would be destroyed. |

Tahoe, Medford, Monterey, ?.........is all good but I think someone made a good point about rotation of states. and technically speaking the Horizon is in Nevada, not even a coastal state. And nobody but Paul has said they will help organize Tahoe.
I still think a poll is in order, but until there is a definite commitment by someone to plan the event in several locations I think the poll is premature. The other problem with a poll is people that don't, won't, or can't attend will help determine the choice possibly at the detriment to an attendee. All the talk about distances is cool, but IMHO if you want to attend you will no matter how far.....ask Rick and Sandy Ollah, they drove the Alien from Minnesota to Socal and back. I drove 900 miles each way to Seattle last summer as did SirAndy. Many drove that far and more to attend the Red Rocks. Shoot Ed Morrow flies out the the West Coast to attend! Joe O was out from Deland Florida this year! With all that being said, if we give this thread some time I think the locations will come together and we can put together a poll. Currently their are firm planning committments for Medford and Monterey, and possibly for Tahoe if people will help Paul. Whew....I am done for now, Jim |

Portland - track rental at ORP is $3500/day on a weekday. Insurance is required, and is $951. 40% deposit is required.
It would take 50 cars to make that happen, and it would leave -0- budget for anything else. The only way that I could see it working is to share the day with PCA or some other group. Grass Valley is 130 miles from PDX, and there really ain't a whole hella lot around there. |

I'm still trying to get more info for Tahoe. Talked to the airport manager about using the parking lot. Doable if on a weekday and prior to Memorial day but insurance is required and a small rental fee for the lot. So that means a Friday. Same guy told me he knows many hotel managers. The HORIZON CASINO has a HUGE back parking lot and that may be doable but need to research. Sounds to me like we all should continue looking at possibilities until something falls in place and then decide.
I'm not an big autocross guy. How big a space will we need for a small course? Dimensions needed...... |
