I'm offering for sale a complete kit in order to mount an A/C compressor on top of the motor which requires no cutting to the engine shelf. I've been running a similar setup for some time with good results. (See this thread here : http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=192917) The compressor mounts directly to a non-smog engine fan shroud with no cutting or drilling.

This kit includes:

Compressor
Mount
Puller Adapter
Plated Pulley
Hardware
Belt

A few notes:
-The compressor is currently set up to run R12. In order to run R134 the oil in the compressor needs to be changed out. I can do this for the cost of oil.
-The compressor fits without any major cutting or drilling however there may be interference with the engine bay insulating pad so minor modification to the pad may be necessary.
-A swivel allen wrench will be necessary to install the pulley adapter.
-Cosmetically the welds didn't come out perfect as I would have liked so if I make any more, they will be at a slightly increased price. This mount is still 100% functional as is.
-This kit, in theory, can be mounted with the engine in the car with the removal of the front tin.

Nope, sorry.

Doug- You need to post this over in the vendor section so it doesn't get lost.

I have a 1976 2.0, that originally came with an air pump, but the pump has been removed by the PO. Can this kit still work, or can it be modified to work?
RohJay
Are any of these components still available?
I'm interested in the Pulley with adapter and Compressor bracket. Thanks

I'm interested in the Pulley with adapter and Compressor bracket. Thanks
I want to know if you can send it to Spain (Europe), or at least that you could send me the plans with measures to do it myself here.
I want to install air conditioning to my 914 and the idea that you have invented seems great to me.

Thanks a lot.

Hello, I am hoping to purchase a pulley addapter if that is still possible. My effort is using a serpentine belt and a micro "vane style" pump that are now available. Thanks, Peter

Doug, Can I get the kit minus the compressor?

I would be intersted in the same. Surprised the compressor is set up for R-12 with is virtually NLA . . . we'll not quite but stupid expensive none the less.

Great work on putting this together.

This thread is from 2013 guys, Doug's not replied since then.

I'd love these items too, preferably in aluminum if possible.

Completely missed that! Bummer!

I was hoping he was still active and would reply. Guys, just bought the A/C kit from Classic Auto Air for my '74. A/C isn't an option down here in TX. I'm going to have to do enough cutting as it is and I don't want to cut into the engine tin/self, if i don't have to. I didn't see anything in the vendor area. Thoughts?
BeatNavy
Why doesn't someone PM him? He's still active here on the World (he was logged on today). Maybe he's not paying attention to the classifieds.

Well, that is curious then. Surprised he hasn't at least responded.

I've often wondered how the compressors mounted for the /4s. Good info.

That is his way and it works well. He's been running his set-up for several years. Neat and logical. beerchug.gif

It's true. I've been off the grid for a while in regards to A/C stuff. After completing the initial development on this stuff, life really took off for me. Finished school, got a job, had two kids and I also moved to the mountains where A/C is not required. I've had quite a few inquire about this stuff over the years but I've never been in a position to start the project back up as I've had so much going on with "life".

With that being said I am now working on making a small volume of pullies and adapters to get started. I also have some more prototyping work going on with the mount. Hopefully I will be able to offer more in the future but no guarantee as to if/when that will happen.

In the meantime if anyone would like to tackle their own AC system, I am more than happy to help and support anyway I can.

I’ll be watching and very interested.
BeatNavy
Congrats to you, Doug. Life sounds good thumb3d.gif

I'll be watching for your A/C stuff (and those beautiful rocker panels in the other thread) if it becomes available.

Good luck!
friethmiller
Sounds good, Doug! Can you put me in for a pre-order, if and when you have them available? I'm 2 1/2 years into a complete restoration on my '74. Mounting the compressor on the engine seems like it will be "forever" from now.
racingredsc
I'd like the complete set up. That would give me a reason to go to the mountains.

I’d also like to be inline for a complete set up when the time comes.

I'm reupholstering our white 914 ('HOWARD) with a tan interior to keep it cool, but just in case it isn't enough to keep the temps down ... idea.gif

Hi Doug - we messaged a while ago, but please keep me on your list as well. Thanks!
friethmiller
Well, I started the installation process of my A/C on my '74 the other weekend. I went with the Classic Auto Air system. My plan was to just cut the holes needed for the hoses and condenser box prior to painting the [top side of my] car. Here are some photos of the condenser install:
sfrenck
How close to the ground does the condensor intake lip sit?

Literati914
Something I've always wondered about..does the valance or air dam not interfere with the air into that intake scoop?
friethmiller
Excellent question. I didn’t even think about that smile.gif. I’ll pull the valance out and see about the clearance. God help me if I have to make any more cuts! That damn compressor is going to be “top-mounted”, I can tell you that!
BeatNavy
I think the scoop is a kind of a non-issue. The condenser has a pretty good size fan to push (or pull?) air across it, so I'm not sure how much of it requires air movement under the car.

I've got a similar setup from a shop I worked with in Las Vegas (can't remember their name). I haven't been driving my car in work clothes in the summer as much and I'm really hesitant to start cutting up the frunk. I've had it on the shelf for almost 2 years now.

I looked at the bottom of the valance and it's contact points and can say that this condenser scoop is below and back from that. Once I get the car painted and go to reassemble everything, I will definitely post pictures.

Pm sent just in the case you might have one of the pulley adapters or more. Thanks

Ok, started building-up my short block this weekend. It won't be long now before I'll be looking to mount my A/C compressor. Doug, any plans to start building these kits again? If not, any chance you can you let me know the length of the pulley extender so I can start the process of fabricating my own. Thanks in advance.
friethmiller
Update: my engine had some clearance issues after Fat/Rimco cleared the case. Standup folks out there. Ended up sending it back to them and had them build the entire engine to make it right. Engine is arriving Mar 2nd. Need to get back to the A/C pulling and bracket stuff. Does anyone have any updated info on possibly acquiring the mount and pull system? Or, at least the specs so I start fabricating these parts. Thanks in advance.
dlee6204
@friethmiller I got your PM the other day but forgot to get back to you. PM your way shortly.

I wish you luck on this, I need these items also, maybe @dlee6204 will drop in with an update and/or offer up design info (if he's not interested in producing them - which is understandable too).
