I recently removed the engine on my 73 for the first time. I used Wayne Dempsey's write-up from Pelican and it was very helpful. But I would have benefited from more detail to take some of the remaining mystery out of the procedure. Attached is a pdf of what I did in my engine removal. I thought I'd post it for any other newbies that are contemplating doing this for the first time. If there are any mistakes, please let me know. Special thanks to Brad Smith from Rennlist for compressing the file so that it would be small enough to attach to this thread.

I would add that since our cars tend to get rolled around alot without the motor/trans, the CV/Axcels should get wired up so they spin freely when the car is rolling around!

Jeff, what does mps stand for?

Manifold pressure sensor. Often described as the thing that looks like a "grenade."

From Anders' site:
•Function: The manifold pressure sensor senses engine load by converting the intake manifold pressure level to an electrical signal that the ECU uses to set the basic injection pulse duration. A special part of the sensor operates at full-load, signaling the ECU to richen the mixture further.

As others have said, great work! (Although I had to do this a few weeks ago and could have benefited from it then. Do me a favor and do the install procedure .)

Just how bad are your longs? Apparently you have some major surgery ahead.

Just about as bad as it gets. I've been doing disassembly and have discovered that someone repaired, and not well, the lower part of the inner longs from the wheel well to the cross bar. Pulled the sound deadening pad off of the firewall yesterday and saw that it had held water and rusted the upper firewall.

Thank you for putting this pdf together. I will be attempting my first removal in the next week or so. Or at least after I have studied your pdf. Printing it and putting it into a notebook!

Very nice, lots of pictures. The other method to drop the engine is to use 2 floor jacks, one on either side. Remove the wheels, slide a moving dolly under the motor and lower each side of the car until the engine just touches the dolly. Remove the engine bar bolts and the transmission bolts and raise up the car to clear the motor. I feel this is much safer than trying to balance the engine on a floor jack almost 2 feet in the air.

One floor jack, two jackstands, 45 minutes unbolting things, two old license plates, and drive train is out.

Cool. But the record for dropping a Beetle engine is something like 21 seconds.
